MMQB: Butler deserving of All-Pro consideration

That pressure by Easley was huge. A little more time and it's a first down to Hilton on Chung.

when butler runs into problems it seems to be more techinque than his athletic skills. a couple of tweaks here and there and he can be an excellent corner. BB and josh boyer will continue to work with him. very optimistic about him.

The third one is misleading because Butler was toasted and needed to do a full out dive just to get near the play. The others are fascinating, though. The kid's a grinder.
The Hurns TD? I thought Malcolm played that well, positioning himself to take away the deep in-cut by staying under the receiver. He knew he had Harmon over the top, so the only way to fit a pass in there was a perfect rope. Tip of the cap to Bortles on that one.

TV footage is never the best, but at 1:47 you can see Hurns get a clean release and is already accelerating past Butler as they go out of the screen. By the time they return at 1:49, Malcolm is a solid two yards behind and has no chance but to leap and hope the ball was underthrown.

Two things:

1) Apparently I was wrong about the double move comment above. :)

2) He was roasted, but was still in a better position than Fletcher was on nearly every play. Like I said, the kid's a grinder.

Ya, you're right, he had a weak attempt at a jam that left him scrambling.

When did Peter King become a good film watcher?

I like Butler a lot, but Peter King's opinion on the matter barely registers as far as I'm concerned.

It wasn't Peter King who wrote it. It was Andy Benoit

Right on, thanks for clarifying. That's definitely better/more credible, even if I still don't agree.

Mazz was talking about Butler yesterday. All I can say is Mazz is a ****ing idiot.

Imagine covering a sport for decades and never really watching film? I can't imagine writing about a single topic for so long without becoming an expert. King's ignorance of many of the basics is shocking. It's truly bizarre that the top of the NFL media food chain is filled mostly with people as uninformed about football as King.

I think he reached that critical juncture where he needed more content but didn't know any more about football... so he just started writing about coffee and hotels. So worthless.

He's the absolute worst. I think butler is this years mccourty for him. Last year he always had a problem with mccourty, blamed him for the Matthews big plays in the super bowl because "he's suppose to take away the deep ball" even though his job is a lot more complicated than that and mazz is a mongoloid.

Well they need to go watch the colts game and at about 10:45 left in the 3rd quarter on 3rd and 10 and watch his pursure on Moncrief and then they'll see.

Without access to review the film, I'm guessing that you're referring to the play where he had to re-start on the double move, showing off very good ability to "catch up" and stay with the receiver.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see the play you're speaking of, and yes--he uses great pursuit and speed to chase down that play and prevent the 3rd down conversion. Remarkable. I remember commenting on that when it happened. The play I was referring to was quite nice, as well.

This is hilarious, Butler has been a midling number 1 CB, which is great considering what we have seen the Patriots trot out there in the past. he certainly is well below Talib and brent grimes...maybe in the Chris Harris range?

Statistically speaking, Chris Harris Jr. has clearly out performed Aqib Talib in the past 22 games, and it's not even that close.

As of a week or two ago and according to the NBC statistics which started in late 2013, Harris had given up an opposing QBR of something in the high 40's, compared to Talib's middle 60s. Both are excellent, but Harris' have obviously been better.

More importantly, Harris hasn't given up a TD since late 2013, continuing a stretch that has seen 22 games now (unless he gave one up vs. CLE last week). Talib has given up at least 5 in that same time frame.

Either way you look at it, both are very good CBs, and it's allowed DEN the luxury to continue to use their first round draft pick from last year, Roby, as the 3rd corner.

Much like you, I'm very high on Butler, and he's proven to provide great value as a cheap UDFA.

I'm not quite sure about the pro bowl talk, though, if we're being totally honest. I think that may be a bit premature. That said, I believe that he's shown improvement, and is almost always right on his man. I think he's continuing to show very good progress.

Butler has been a competitive #1 corner, can't say much more than that and thats really impressive for where he's coming from. He's not an all pro corner and I wouldn't even consider him for it.

Good. The more people begin to view the Secondary as a legitimately talented unit, the bigger their reputation will grow.

For whatever it's worth, most Jets fans who follow us seem to think the kid is legit, take it for what it's worth but outside opinions matter. We will almost always think more of our own than anyone else, when the team who hates us more than anyone has fans saying they think he's the real deal it speaks some volumes.

I love Butler. He has confidence. He also has a short term memory. He gets beat, for sure, but it never bothers him. Those traits are as important as any for a corner.

When you do anything in life and get beat, it drains you, that doesn't happen to Butler.

All pro is a reach. But Malcolm is coming along nicely. One thing I have noticed with Malcolm, he is a great tackler.
Yes. This is why I added him to my fantasy team 3 seconds after the Buffalo game.
