Montana on whether he suspects the Pats: "They always say if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying"

Comcast just showed the clip. There's no way Montana was being anything other than a ****. When I only read the transcript, my reaction was "Meh...whatever.". Seeing it on film gave me a very different impression. Just speaking for myself.
Agreed, hearing it on the radio I feel the same way. Maybe reading the comments doesn't seem as bad but when you hear his voice there's no other way to take it IMO.

Who cares? Jerry Rice cheated (Stickkum). Bill Walsh cheated (faked his radio communications didn't work so Parcells couldn't use his). Montana's titles are just as tainted as Brady's.

Nope. Non of Brady's titles are tainted. When did that memo regarding taping restrictions take effect? It was after 2004. 2006, 2007? So those titles are not tainted. Neither is 2014.

Joe Montana and his titles are most certainly are tainted. He admits to cheating, as does Jerry Rice.

Funny thing is that brady has such high regard for montana. Brady's career has been much more impressive then montana in a salary cap era.

He's right and, considering total absence of proof, this persecution of the patriots is absurd. There never was any proof of anything, but if they were 100% guilty, it's way less than hands full of stickum, teflon shirts etc.

Everybody tapes signals, all the top coaches said so. Montana probably can't believe what a douchebag league it's become.

It became that way when forehead whined to the league because he couldn't cut it against our pats

And it wasn't the taping that was illegal it was the placement of the camera.

I think his point is being missed.

His logic: All NFL teams cheat. The Patriots are an NFL team. Therefore, the Patriots cheated.

As a fanbase, let's try to be a bit less sensitive.

As soon as this irrelevant old jerk and Sticky Fingaz shut their pieholes and go away, sure.

Honestly, who really cares what the second best QB thinks?

Peeped this, and Montana seemed to be alluding to the fact that the great teams are always looking to "push the envelope", even his own 49ers teams in the 1980's... Maybe it's just me, but it came across like he actually considers it a positive thing...
I agree. My interpretation of his remarks is "sure they did it, but everyone does things like that, so it isn't a big deal."

i put this more on that big-earred goof siciliano for asking the stupid question in the first place. he should have asked him about jerry rice's stickum and his own teams cheating. that would have been a more pertinent question seeing how montana hasn't played in 20 years and his opinion on what's going on in the league now is meaningless.

Joe Montana has the same Super Bowl, winning percentage as Joe Theismann, Jim Plunkett, Jim McMahon, Doug Williams, Jeff Hostetler, and Mark Rypien combined. He went 4-0 during a time the NFC went 14-0. Sound a little less impressive in that context?

From 1982-1999, a span of 18 years, two of the three lowest point totals in the Super Bowl by the victor were by...Joe Montana. The other was Jeff Hostettler, who was a backup.

In four Super Bowl victories, the 80s 49ers allowed less than 16 ppg, over 2 points less than the 70s Steelers in their four victories. Brady's Patriots have allowed nearly 23 ppg in six appearances.

Super Joe.

Jerry is doubling down in light of Montana's comments

Sticky Fingaz, your nose is growing.

You're right. It's not as if there have been any issues and/or events that could possibly have caused us to be defensive or, as you suggest, sensitive.

Not everyone gets to throw to Stickum McGee.

My opinion even before I read folks' reporting on his voice tone was:
  • Montana's sincere opinion probably is: Good teams are generally similar in the extent to which they push up to and in some cases the limits of the rules.
  • Montana has decided it is expedient to speak truthfully on that point, but ...
  • ... he hopes people will maintain the incorrect opinion that the Pats are particularly bad cheaters, and as long as he doesn't have to technically lie to do so, he will encourage people to keep holding that view.
