Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana joined the NFL Network’s “Around the NFL” on Thursday to touch on a number of different subjects, including the Patriots.
Montana was asked if he’s at all suspect of what the Patriots have done over the years and is it wrong to question what they have done?
“They always say, if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying, so they sure are trying hard,” he said with a laugh.
“Are they cheating or trying hard is the question?” the host asked.
“They could be both,” he joked.
“They have this thing called the rule book,” he added. “When you step outside the rule book, you’re fudging with it a little bit.”
Montana was asked if his 49ers teams did any cheating back when he played. He said everyone did what they could to gain an advantage to win.
“Like I said, if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying. Everybody does everything they can to possibly get a little bit of an edge,” Montana said. “Back then, it wasn’t illegal, but it was illegal — like our guys used to spray, and everybody did at the time, silicon on their jersey’s. The linemen, so that the defense couldn’t get a hold of them and then the defensive line did it so the offensive line … then if you did it too much they said, ‘No, no, go change your jersey’s.’ It’s just a game. Everybody wants to win so you do whatever you can to make it happen.”
