Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana joined the NFL Network’s “Around the NFL” on Thursday to touch on a number of different subjects, including the Patriots.

Montana was asked if he’s at all suspect of what the Patriots have done over the years and is it wrong to question what they have done?

“They always say, if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying, so they sure are trying hard,” he said with a laugh.

“Are they cheating or trying hard is the question?” the host asked.

“They could be both,” he joked.

“They have this thing called the rule book,” he added. “When you step outside the rule book, you’re fudging with it a little bit.”

Montana was asked if his 49ers teams did any cheating back when he played. He said everyone did what they could to gain an advantage to win.

“Like I said, if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying. Everybody does everything they can to possibly get a little bit of an edge,” Montana said. “Back then, it wasn’t illegal, but it was illegal — like our guys used to spray, and everybody did at the time, silicon on their jersey’s. The linemen, so that the defense couldn’t get a hold of them and then the defensive line did it so the offensive line … then if you did it too much they said, ‘No, no, go change your jersey’s.’ It’s just a game. Everybody wants to win so you do whatever you can to make it happen.”

Peeped this, and Montana seemed to be alluding to the fact that the great teams are always looking to "push the envelope", even his own 49ers teams in the 1980's... Maybe it's just me, but it came across like he actually considers it a positive thing...

I wish he would have said every team tries. I wish reporter had asked if evey team tries.

They asked Montana about Brady possibly passing him in SB wins. Don't remember his exact answer but it was fair enough and kinda funny.

Something to the effect of "How many people (really) want to see their records broken" and "Not many of his records held for long".

Hmmm... this could get...

...sticky.

I agree. But it didn't sound like the appropriate thing to say, especially given what the team and the fans have been put through these last 9 months

I heard this on the radio and it definitely didn't sound like respect or acting like all great teams "cheat". It sounded like a bitter jab at a franchise /player potentially surpassing he and his GOAT 9ers... I wonder how he feels about Rice's stickum use or Walsh's admitted and alleged tactics.. I guess that's all totally legit though.. Losing more respect for Montana every time he opens his skechers wearing mouth.. Ugh.

The full quote isn't as bad as it sounds like it could be. However, he's still saying the guy that has tied him - and may well pass him - in Championships is doing whatever, up to and including cheating, to win. If Montana were a true, secure, Champion he would simply say that the Patriots have been a great team, and Brady a great QB, the past 15 years. Period.

I haven't heard so much double talk since...well I don't know when.
Sure Joe..."Like I said, if you ain't cheating , you ain't trying."
No Joe, that is what you said the Patriots are always saying.

Who cares? Jerry Rice cheated (Stickkum). Bill Walsh cheated (faked his radio communications didn't work so Parcells couldn't use his). Montana's titles are just as tainted as Brady's.

Perhaps we're all a bit oversensitive to it, as well.

I don't think Montana was saying anything sinister. I mean, after all, his WRs were using stickum.

But no-one talks or cares about it. If I'm guilty and no-one cares, that frees me up to point guilt at others and I get off scott free.
