Nothing too complicated.. but when i watch live i don't get a chance to truly try to understand our schemes. different fronts, coverages, blocking schemes, routes, etc.

where can i find just analysis or explanations of the pats?

Sorry. Gotta do it.

for the record I should reword- I'm not asking for something that's dumbed down. by nothing too complicated I just meant I don't expect the patriots to be completely revealing their schemes. I am able to understand football lol

I've read good things on this forum about the book featured on that website. I'm interested in purchasing it to learn more about the ins and outs of football. I found the book on Amazon, and was also recommended a couple of books by Chris Brown.

Has anyone read the following books before? I'm wondering if I should order both. I don't know if the concepts overlap.

The Art of Smart Football
The Essential Smart Football

I have read Kirwan's book not the Brown book. Kirwan's book is very good IMO.

Honestly, this forum is probably the best place for it once the story lines get going and there is something substantive to dig into. Right now they're still getting stuff installed and haven't put enough on tape to really identify what concepts they are using a lot this season. 2-4 weeks from now is usually when it gets interesting.

That website is great. Got lost in it for about an hour. Last night they posted Brady's passing map. Looks like they do a thing "Analytics advance scouting library"...this week they're posting for the Pats Colts game. New posts every night with analytics about the two teams. freakin' love it.

Good stuff... https://realfootballnetwork.com/5753/ne-ind-brady-passing-map/

Chris Brown is the hands down winner. You'll never learn so much about football as you will with Smart Football; it's does the best job of presenting football strategy in an understandable way. Don't just follow the Patriots. For all the precice strategy, there's still so much overlap in football that you'll learn just as much if you just learn about football in general. Do this with Smart Football. He has plenty of breakdown of Patriot's related football too. A lot of it is in regards to the basic concepts where he'll use the Patriots as an example, or someone closely affiliated; like Nick Saban's defense in Alabama.

Here's a good start: this play is called "Gun Empty Left - 79 Y-Hook D-Slant" It can be found in the 03/04 playbook. It's a pretty basic football concept, too; know commonly as the "Y-stick." I love this play. Smart Football gives a great breakdown.

I liked it so much that I put it on youtube back in 2012 when I saw it:

I really liked the play, out of the Gun Trips Left formation, in the playoffs for the Brady to Amendola TD

EDIT: Oh, the only difference between the playbook diagram and the play shown on tape is the backside combination (not playside)....

The diagram uses "Tosser," which is a double slant. The play on video uses "D-Slant," which is one slant going in paired with a slant going out (creating a "rub"). So, I'm guessing that the call in the huddle would have been: "Empty Right - 78 Y-Hook - D-Slant"

"Empty Right" refers to the formation.
"78" refers to the OL blocking assignments (in the playbook, too long to discuss)
"Y-Hook" is the playside concept
"D-Slant" (or Tosser) is the backside combination
