There is nothing Brady could have said that would satisfy all of you.

Questions were fine
Answers were fine
Interview was well worth listening to
Interview was important for things beyond sports

That's about all we should be asking of a sports show, and more

There's a lot of studies. Just because the right people endorse them isn't a guarantee.

A researcher found he was unable to reproduce 47 out of 53 landmark studies.

Which is not to slander medical researchers because lots of things are difficult to measure when they involve humans. I feel like I've seen everything bad for me become good and vice versa over my lifetime. And I'm not that old.

For 50 years the American Heart Association and government guidelines recommended low cholesterol. School lunches, diets and many products were based of that "quackery" that affected orders of magnitude more than Guererro ever has, or could. Now they say cholesterol probably isn't a big concern.

My take is this, I don't care what Brady does. Maybe he's discovered the new thing, or maybe it's a waste of time. It's his life, his responsibility.

I'm more concerned that there exists people with the power to tell me or Brady what I can or cannot consume. People who rely on studies that couldn't be reproduced 47 of 53 times. Maybe those people should make opinions and not laws. That's what struck me about the Guererro story more than anything. That I can't decide for myself what is or is not snake oil.

Then we have things like

"So much of my diet is based on an acid-alkaline principle, which to me does reduce inflammation in my body."

Ummm...sorry, but...no, that's pseudoscientific bs.

No, it's not. Eat a more balanced diet with a higher percentage of leafy greens, vegetables, fruits, and unprocessed foods, and you're going to see improvements in your health -- one of those specific areas being inflammation.

The SAD (standard American diet) continues massive amounts of processed foods, often heavy on dairy, simple carbohydrates, and unhealthy fats. Generally speaking, these foods promote acidic processes thus, over an extended time of eating primarily these foods, blood pH becomes unbalanced and this can lead to inflammation. Unprocessed foods (dark leafy greens, vegetables, seeds and nuts) tend to be more alkaline promoting foods, which helps balance pH, and thus reduce inflammation. This isn't quackery, this isn't pseudoscientific ********, it's simple nutrition. This is a specific way in which eating a healthy diet helps someone (balancing pH within the body), but it's really common sense. Eating a healthier diet makes you healthier.

We've got a government that can't even decide upon the dietary pyramid/plate, that lies to us about food and drug issues, and that props up entire sections the health care field despite all sorts of questions and dubious claims. Meanwhile, mainstream science mocked leeches and other forms of 'witchery', and today, things like leeching, use of maggots, etc... have been found to have legitimate uses after all.

Do your homework on all of it, regardless of where you get your initial info.

  • Yes, comments like calling Coca-Cola 'poison for kids' crosses the line (3%, 15 Votes)

I think Pepsi (not Coke) is an NFL sponsor but I don't think they're going to be happy about this comment.

If Brady says Papa John's is unhealthy, it means war!

Tom’s a terrific athlete and I value his opinions on football.

Curt Schilling was a terrific athlete and I value his opinions on baseball.

Tom Cruise is a terrific actor and I’d likely value his opinions on acting.

That doesn’t mean I give a rat’s ass about any of their thoughts about religion, science, or for whom I should vote, among other things. And that’s just fine! I appreciate them for what they do well and I don't assume that they are Gods to emulate.

WTF is the matter with everybody these days??? Did the U.S. get bombed with anal gas? Jeezus krist, who gives a good goddamn WTF Brady does off the field as long as it doesn't involve bashing women's skulls in, driving drunk at 140 mph with kids in the car or whipping the shyt out of your kids with birch branches?

Just win, Brady.

You'll have to provide some links to back this up. Human blood pH only varies by 0.10. If it varies by much more than that you are going to have some serious problems.

Just a basic response to keep the conversation going:

As to the other health claims, there's some early evidence that a diet low in acid-producing foods like animal protein (such as meat and cheese) and bread and high in fruits and veggies could help prevent kidney stones, keep bones and muscles strong, improve heart health and brain function, reduce low back pain, and lower risk for type 2 diabetes. But researchers aren't sure of some of these claims yet.

Pfft. Kidney stones. Give me a break. I have many many kidney stones (passed three this weekend). For those who are genetically predisposed, there is no cure. And for those who have their first at 54 - no worries, you'll die before you form another.

Eating well helps keep people healthy. That is legit. But there are many examples of people who eat well and die young as well as many who eat poorly and last 90+ quality years. Genetics is much more responsible for all of this than eating well.

But again, as long as Brady keeps fit it seems like he'll keep winning and that is all I care about. That and the fact I'm glad I don't endorse Guerrero.

Genetics is clearly the key factor in both life expectancy and overall health. What people are generally talking about is improving the margins.

....and Tom Brady doesn't care what you should think about any of his nutritional ideas either. Most people have now forgotten by now that Brady didn't bring this topic up, Minnihane did.

Now if you ask Tom what he thinks, I'm pretty sure he'd be excited enough about the topic to discuss it with you.....and unlike most people, he wouldn't be judgmental about it. Now I'm too old and set in my ways to follow the basics of what Brady believes enough of the time, but I'm not stupid enough to ignore it completely.

There are the right things you SHOULD eat. There are some things that you CAN eat in moderation. And there are some things we should NEVER eat......and do it anyway. You can mostly be OK if you do most of the first, some of the 2nd and just a bit of the last. Unfortunately that's not how the "food industry" has programmed us in this mass age.

Outside of a true poison, what is there that nobody should ever eat?

Many people, including myself, don't think the margins are anywhere near the value of these habits. For a world class athlete such as Brady, I understand the reasoning.

But Brady's association with Guerrero is the potentially dangerous part of this story - not avocado ice cream or anti-Cola sentiments. This guru would scare me.

Genetics is clearly the key factor in both life expectancy and overall health. What people are generally talking about is improving the margins.

As a fortysomething woman (I never reveal my age), I can tell you that nutrition is VERY IMPORTANT as you age. I don't know what his exact diet is, but I do know that as I got older, I started to eat better. I don't eat out at all. I cook everything myself. It's made a difference in my overall health. As you age, you have to take better care of your health. It's that simple. What Brady is talking about is not magic. It's a commitment to watch what you eat. I do that everyday.
I look younger than I really am. It's amazing and irritating at the same time.

I always thought you were in your thirties.

It's not even that the government can't decide, it's that the proper nutrition we've been told about for decades are lies bought by monied interests. I'm far from someone who would embrace snake oil, but the entire food pyramid is a lie.

As for nutritional studies, they're dealing with human subjects and ery difficult to replicate. Many don't control for environmental or socioeconomic factors, which play a huge role in health outcomes. It's just very hard to tell what's true and what's not.
