The offense looked like ****. The run game seemed mediocre. The protection looked porous. The passing game looked liked there was no coordination, the QB looked discordant and confused.....and the game ended up 30-6, it was never in doubt after the first 5 minutes of the third quarter, and the offense easily left 14 points on the table.

So there were we have it. We have finally come to a point where a 24 point win can be looked at as being below minimum expectations, and "only" a workman-like job. Think about it. How is THAT for being spoiled fans who are rarely satisfied with anything. However for a good part of the game, that was the way I was feeling and I bet a lot of you felt the same way, more dissatisfied than happy, more critical than pleased. That is just SOOOOOO wrong, and I desperately want to relieve myself of this feeling.

Disclaimer: I watched this game in a bar, so it was hard to concentrate on the sound, and which offensive and defensive linemen where shuffling in the game. It was also loud and I missed a lot of the announcing so I couldn't hear a lot of the details I would have liked to know, like who made tackles, penalties blocks, etc.

1. There are 2 major questions that I would hope to know about after people get to see the coaches tapes on Wednesday or after people rerun the TV feeds in the next couple of days. One is to figure out what took so long to figure out the pass blocking patterns. Brady was sacked 5 times in the first quarter and a half or so, and yet pretty much wasn't touched more than a couple of times after that. Second I really need to know what exactly consists of offensive pass interference because I no longer have any idea any longer.

2. The Pats had at least 3 offensive pass interference calls that each cost them a LOT of yardage and at least 2 scores in this game. Now I am someone who generally is looking for the officials to call some things on the offense s often as I can. I WANT offensive passing interference to be called when it occurs. I WANT it be illegal to throw picks by blocking someone's way. So when you turn your shoulders into someone, or throw a hip at someone you SHOULD be flagged.

HOWEVER it didn't even come close to that happening that way in this game. In 2 of those cases the crossing receiver simply crossed into the defender's path, a path he had just as much right to as the defender. No shoulders were turned, no hips checked. In the best case, Edelman just was running his route and ran into a defender. The contact was just as much initiated by the defender as Edelman. I wouldn't have known what the ref would have wanted him to do. Unless they want to eliminate all crossing patterns what do they expect. Do they want the receiver to have to avoid the defender or run from him? I don't think that's the intent.

In 2 of those calls, there were no where else the receivers could have gone, and in one call the "shoulder turn" was so light I felt it was a pretty weak. I know BB's staff is really trying to iron out exactly what the refs want in this play since it is such a big one for the team. I can see them getting better at it recently simply by running them less like basketball picks What the ref's can't do is to reward the defender for simply being lazy and running into the receiver and not even try to get out of the way. The receiver has just as much right to the right of way as the defender. I thought the Pats did a much better job today and didn't get rewarded much and it cost them a lot in the first half of the game. This official's crew didn't call this penalty well in this game.

3. The Pass protection looked horrid in most of the first half. About the only time we had decent protection that half there was a penalty that cost us 25 or 35 yds....and the 10 more. The thing was that we KNEW it was going to get straightened out eventually, only this week it took 3 more drives to get if fixed.

On one of the post shows they thought it was Gronk and Williams protecting Solder and Cannon on the left side, but I specifically saw them more than a few times on the right as well, so it JUST wasn't that. I saw Andrews at least once whiff on a middle rush. The thing is that I know I DON'T know enough about the pass protection rules to know exactly who was at fault most of the times, but it will need to come out......AND get better.

I think Goog's comment fits well this week too. The OL blocking is "good enough", not good".

4. Hardy is a very bad guy who is very good at just one thing at being a football player. I hated that he had some success at the start of the game, and I LOVED the fact that at after about the first and a half quarter he completely disappeared with just one more QB hit for the rest of the game (on Julian's TD). Nothing but bad things should ever happen to that guy. I'm not sure for a fact, but I watch pretty closely after the game, and I don't think anyone purposely took the time to say anything to him afterward, like they did with so many others.

5. This was the best job the defense did on the rushing game thus far this season. IIRC about 80 yds in about 23 carries was solid work given how much of an effort the Cowboys put into it. Certainly wasn't a shut down job, but like every other session so far, it was better than the one before and that is the most important aspects of it when the result is a win.

6. They were credited with 3 sacks (2 more by Sheard) but it really seemed to me that by the beginning of the 4th quarter we had ceased to rush the passer hard and left him the shortest of dump offs right through a healthy chunk of garbage time.

7. The secondary once again improved. 188 passing yards in the passing game is better than just OK on a team's home field. IIRC it was the best pass defense that was played against one of Weeden's games. They made a point to stop Witten and he didn't catch a pass until the 3rd quarter and wound up with 32 yds all told. And part of the fact I'm not a Millionaire is due the fact that I thought I was going to be cute and pick Witten as my TE today. ;)

8. Stephen Gotskowski is scary good. He had another 10 yds at least in the 57 yarder. I think the limits are pretty arbitrary on where he's stopping these days with decent wind.

9. On a side note, I don't think I'd ever run a kick out of the endzone. There are at least 3 things that could go wrong when you do (penalty, fumble, not get it out to the 20, etc) and only one when good thing when you do which only happens about one every 10 kicks, when it gets past the 25 ydline. It makes taking it out not EVER worth it. It is a shame though since it's one of the most exciting plays in the game.

10. You are nuts if you don't think the Bengals are for real after today. That was a real good win for them and a sign of their maturity. This was a game they would have lost every other recent year. Player for player they have the best talent in the conference, and Dalton is playing through some of the plays that have cost him games in past years. It is convenient to dismiss him and the team for past failures but that is just lazy.
Cincinnati looks by far our biggest challenge. I do NOT want to play them down the road in Cinci in January.

11. How bad can an offense be and STILL be 5-0, but that is what Denver is. Let's see how good that defense is come December, but on the same hamd, Peyton might also get better at running this offense in a couple of months. On the plus side, BB and Wade Phillips have had many many battles over the years and there have been very few of them that Phillips wound up on top on.....and there has NEVER been one that Kubiak ever came out on.....at least one Bill didn't want to win.

12. Denver will be in the media, but Cincinnati will be the team that will be fighting us for the prize at the end. Thank GOD Marvin Lewis will be still HC when all that talent ends up there at the end. I'm confident the Pats will have a winning game plan, but will they be good enough to execute it? But here I am worrying about events 12 games down the road. Not good. Who knows what our team and theirs will look like in 3 months

13. What we are watching happening to the Ravens is just all kinds of good. I don't even like Ozzie anymore. Someone should tell John Harbaugh that it's HARD to keep winning year in and year out. Not everyone can do it. In fact, these days, not ANYONE can do it except one.....and we should never fail to let anyone of of the 2 capitols of CRYBABY NATION know it as often as we can.

14. Maybe we should be asking this question this week. Are the Colts a better team with Hastelbeck at QB or Luck this week? Through the first 3 weeks Luck was the least productive QB in the league. THAT is how badly these idiots have screwed this kid up so far. This hasn't been a step back. This has been a REGRESSION that could be a lot worse than it is.

15. The Bad news is we've had some serious bumps come out of this game, especially with Solder and Hightower. The Good news is that it looks like all of them will be back it a few weeks at worst. I was really scared about Hightower at first. He was playing as well as Collins thus far. We will miss him, but we will survive him and Nate.

16. First thing we need to see from the stats boys this week are the game snaps. The most fascinating numbers are going to come out to be who got the snaps on the DL line and who played on the OL and TE.

17. Will Tom do me a small favor and give Chandler a few targets next week. At SOME point Gronk is going to get covered and he will have to be open.

18. That was a superb catch by Martin late in the game. And there hasn't been a single game this year where you DIDN'T said " I never saw a 3rd down back do THAT before". I am constantly amazed by how many times Lewis falls forward at his size. The production of both guys suck at fantasy but are awesome for the running and catching games. I actually think it would be cool to see some plays with BOTH of them in the backfield at the same time. There was a time a few decades ago when backfields always had 2 RB's.

3 big things I would like to agree with:
Ghost is amazing.
Lewis amazes you a couple times a game.
Good to hear preliminary, shaky at best reports that Hightower and Solder are relatively "ok," and I don't specifically remember a cowboy going down either.

Before the game my ONLY apprehension was what the scumbag, Clete Blakeman, would do to stall the Patriots offense and screw the defense. Well, he tried his damnedest. That first quarter was an abomination. Now WHO gets the Indy game? The Cracker-Jack northeast hater, Triplette ...or Goodell's chosen one fixer, Jerome "Roger had ham & peas for dinner" Boger.? Corrente, Parry, Vinovich, Allen ,Hussey et al ref this game NE wins by 40 points. One thing is clear, Roger is running out of "proof" with Brady winning on the road in these "We're ready to kill the Patreee-ottts!" venues.

Of course, any time now you rotten SOB-dell...break out the pressures for the balls in games across the USA...you gutless worm of a half a rat turd.

Good post Ken. Lewis continues to astonish me with his quickness and like someone else said about him, "it looks like Shady and Sproles had a baby." Dude looks simply amazing if he can stay healthy and keep the ball in his hands.

I also agree with you about the Bengals. I was keeping an eye on them and thought that the game was out of their reach after Seattle went up and I was extremely surprised to check in later to see that Bengals had gotten back into the game. In years past that never would have happened!! I also agree that the Patriots, like last year will have a game plan that will lay Cincinnati to waste.

Ken you succinctly describe why I stay home and watch the football games with my superfan wife.. no distractions, replay and plenty of time for pee breaks.. we even renegged on several SB invites last February..

I agree about Chandler.. he needs to be integrated into the offense more than he has, would take the pressure off of Gronk, although we got some of that "Classic Gronk" with his bulldozer method of just running over Dbacks..

Edelman and Lewis continue to amaze me with their quickness, some d backs are gonna get some broken ankles.. both are classic Pats guys, UDFA's or low draft choices who make an impact as we play to their strengths.

Stephen Gostkowsks should change the lettering on his jersey to, "Automatic"... as I watch other games on TV some of their kicking games are an adventure, what a luxury to have both him and Allen who do their jobs as the best kicking tandem in the NFL...

As good as they look, for me to believe in Cincinnati will take a few more weeks.. haven't we been down this road before??? I do not have a lot of confidence in Marvelous Marvin..

Pats made some major adjustments on protection. Either doubled Hardy with an RB or, what I thought was more interesting, had the tackles cut block when left 1 on 1 with a DE. Brady had about a second to get rid of the ball after the cut block. How many QBs can find their target that quickly?

I'll be honest and say I found this a hugely satisfying game all round.

When the weather turns and playoff football approaches we aren't going to smash teams from the get go every week and keep our foot on the throttle - racking up points like a pinball machine.

When the games get tougher (something i'll always remember from the 2007 season is that there was a real noticeable inability ...Martz like really, to get away from what had been working and wasn't anymore ie spread them out and throw it all day) they are going to need to figure stuff out on the fly and adapt.

I think thats been the major change to the offence post-2007 - they really are chameleon like - and it is quite amazing that they are able to implement so many offensive schemes and concepts (that aren't simplistic to begin with) and execute so well.

The defense needed to be less passive than the 2007 era ones as well - not just waiting for the offence to rack up point and then become one dimensional - sometimes they'd need to take the initiative - play tight coverages and trust their D-line to get to the QB - I think that is what we are seeing now.

This game filled me with yet more optimism that this team - this super young team - is only going to get better - and at a relatively exponential rate as the season progresses.

Nice post Ken, thanks!

Wanted to add my perspective on one comment, which resonated so well with me but for which I am NOT feeling bad about:

"However for a good part of the game, that was the way I was feeling and I bet a lot of you felt the same way, more dissatisfied than happy, more critical than pleased. That is just SOOOOOO wrong, and I desperately want to relieve myself of this feeling"

I am not crucifying myself for having the exact emotions after seeing the first half. Why? For the simple reason that I view this as FU season in which TB torches every single team with an intensity never seen before and hosts the SB @ the end of the season.

Is that reasonable?

Well....It is as reasonable as deflate-gate.

Did that Rom make some digs @ TB over deflategate? Just for that I want us to humilate the Cowboys and the Panthers. Given the smear and humilation that has occured for both the players and us fans, I just want TB and BB to demolish every friggin team to show their superiority and focus.

A great takeaway for me: Given Tom's performance in the last two SBs or for the matter any other game when he gets hit and rattled early, I was wondering if we will follow the same course.

Boy! Delighted to see him not following that route. Glad to see the O make those adjustments and deliver a much improved second half that was a better representation of what they are.

GO PATS!!

I wonder if this ended up being a trap game, bye, wounded team, looking forward to fu game with hated scum team/org.

We are living large when a 30-6 game on the road is a mediocre game from our POV.

Happy to see the D growing.

Cincinnati will be the toughest obstacle to getting to SB50. The Jets games maybe the toughest games left on the schedule, I can't believe I'm thinking that.

The offense looked like ****. The run game seemed mediocre. The protection looked porous. I lived through dreith, 86 bears, 90s, .... I'll take being spoiled. I'm due :)
......

1..... Second I really need to know what exactly consists of offensive pass interference because I no longer have any idea any longer.

....e. This official's crew didn't call this penalty well in this game.
. The refs didn't have any better idea what opi is anymore than you or I. That is what you get when refs get told to follow their game-specific points of emphasis by La Liga (aka casa nostra jesta)

4. Hardy is a very bad guy who is very good at just one thing at being a football player. At the end of 2d or 3d series cameras showed him sucking on O2 while sitting on the bench. I didn't know Dallas was such a high altitude city, particularly for a home team guy ;). But, At that point I figured his affect on the game was about to wane drastically. Maybe now that he is not suspended he will get in condition to play 4 qtrs. whatever not our conf to worry about.

Running game: defense was playing give up the run to contain great wrs or running QBs in 2 of first three games. I don't see this as improvement, in fact I thought they had some horrible lapses (not holding edge -1x and bad tackling) allowing a few runs that shouldn't have been (weeden once and Murray on a bunch) Statistically was better, but quality wise ? Ehhhh ?. I'll wait to hear from those who know more than I, but my gut-eyes told me they didn't get better. (Just schemed better against the run)
6. They were credited with 3 sacks (2 more by Sheard) but it really seemed to me that by the beginning of the 4th quarter we had ceased to rush the passer hard and left him the shortest of dump offs right through a healthy chunk of garbage time.

In the last Dallas drive they only rushed three (at least once only two) until Dallas got inside the 20. Then they dialed it back up to four and stoned them FIVE TIMES (albeit once weeden missed a wide open man) from inside the ten. LOL.
.....

8. Stephen Gotskowski is scary good. He had another 10 yds at least in the 57 yarder. I think the limits are pretty arbitrary on where he's stopping these days with decent wind.

SG is absolutely the best. But it is amazing that so many kickers can get such distance now a days.

Related note- Janikowski was the A big reason faders lost to donkeys yesterday, missed three shots. (Carr throwing pick 6 the other). He used to be known as the strongest leg in the league. SG puts more in touchback zone than he does now a days.

As long as it looks boring when we are kicking off, I'm all for it.

This team looks very complete. It is great when you win ugly and even better when ugly is 30-6. Man times have changed. Anybody remember the 9-3 game against Cleveland in 2003? Now that was an ugly win!

Off topic, but did anybody notice the terrible coaching and time management in last nights SF-NYG game? The 49ers could have easily have won that game except for the 1) inability to properly manage the clock on their last drive and 2) not covering the only good receiver the Giants had left - Vareen.

This league has some terrible coaches. It really does.

The offense looked like ****. The run game seemed mediocre. The protection looked porous. The passing game looked liked there was no coordination, the QB looked discordant and confused

I know TB and McD love the spread for it's "tells". Move a couple guys around and you can usually tell pretty quick man/zone/blitzes/etc. That said, I think the vast majority continue to really abhor the empty backfield component therein. This is a passing team. Check. That said, the very threat of balance moves this passing team from virtually unstoppable to literally unstoppable. The half step hesitation of any defensive player in coverage runs a 4-7 yd gain into a 20-30 yd gain in many instances. Especially considering the disgusting first half, and the second half adjustment to have a back in the backfield on most plays on the first drive which looked like the rest of the season so far, this theory seems to add credence.

The defense for the second straight game, anaconda'd the offense. Try this - get squeezed a little. Try that - get squeezed some more. As a fan of the entire game, not just the putting up of points, but the prevention of as well - that thrilled me to no end. I can't remember the last year a three man rush of the Patriots could get home. Happened twice yesterday against the "best OL in the league". And the coverage? Even the Ryan haters gotta give up some reluctant props.

Last point, on the "rub" aspect of the crosses (I had to laugh at the Edelman offensive interference as my wife exclaimed "Isn't that the Talib play?") is just to echo Ken: it either is or is inn't as they say down here in the South lands and those two examples are striking in their actual sameness! If the Patriots don't lead the league in bringing in officials to help them understand the rules, they're likely in the top five. There's a reason for that - so they can practice them and moreso learn where the limits are.

Air Force officer veterans likely know the game "Flickerball" from their leadership school. The game is one in which, kind of like ultimate frisbee, you pass a football down a field and score by hitting a goal on a couple posts with the ball. That said, the game has little to do with athleticism or planning because there are pages of capricious, arbitrary rules to follow. It's on purpose to force the flight of young captains to study these rules and discover gaps and holes in them to exploit. THAT is the leadership challenge - not who to put on whom defensively. More and more I feel that the NFL is adopting the AF method of rule interpretation. Rules have become a tool, not a facilitation of safe, organized play, but of limiting in more and more examples, certain teams from certain components while allowance in others. This is more than just "different crews calling the game differently", but instead full fledged different rulesets based on the abilities of the teams involved."

Someone in the game day thread brought up the NBA. As much as I hate the inference because the NBA has indeed crafted a refereeing cartel designed to ensure close games and coddle "stars" with preferential treatment. That the NFL is too moving in that direction (if not already there) makes me downright sick to my stomach.

I think it's more that this league has some terrible owners because those bad coaches never seem to go away, they just bounce from one system to another.

Is your implication in your last point that Martin is a running back?
no I just started talking about Martin's catch and just flowed into my Lewis comments. Just a product of a tired mind. ;)

What still sticks out to me after this game is Brady's toughness and how hard is he is to stop. The Cowboys beat the crap out of Brady, but after every hit, he got back up and continued carving up the Cowboys Defense.

Years ago, great pressure with 4 guys was the recipe to beat Brady, but not any more. At 38, he's unshakable, shows no physical decline, is playing the best football of his career and has eliminated the only known weakness in his game. I wonder how long he can continue to improve.

"Second I really need to know what exactly consists of offensive pass interference because I no longer have any idea any longer."

Pick plays. They're calling a lot more OPI calls for illegal picks.

no I just started talking about Martin's catch and just flowed into my Lewis comments. Just a product of a tired mind. ;)

Ah, I thought my own tired mind misread something.

As to getting off to a "slow start" last night, I'd just remind folks that the other team also gets a vote in how the game turns out. :)

Dallas has a pretty good coaching staff but had some serious losses to it's roster due to injuries. Playing at home helped bolster their remaining guys, and that's always something to consider. Just playing the devil's advocate here. It isn't always our fault when some things happen. Thhe other side usually has a couple good players too.

But as has been said above, I remember the years before Bledsoe, and then the coming of Belichick and Brady. If this is a mediocre performance, then I'll take it, because when compared to the past, we're living in a Golden Age of Patriots football.

And I agree withgh the comments on Cincy. They look for real, but I'll also give them a couple more games before I go full in on saying they will be a force in the playoffs.
