BB apparently gave one of his lengthy Friday talks, specifically on Landry-era schemes at the Cowboys. More than the particulars of the schemes, what interested me was his references to how long it takes to get a scheme properly implemented. It sounds like he's saying it takes 10-20 years. Even if that's hyperbole, it's instructive ...

I saw that as well.

BB was a Chatty Cathy this week. 1st a lecture on the NFL rulebook and another 10 minute lecture on the Landry Cowboys' offensive backfield formations and the Flex Defense (which was WAY before its time).

On a side note, this sounds sad but as an older NFL fan I found it totally awesome that he explained that. Growing up I had always wondered why the Cowboys OLs would always stand up then get back down in their stance. I had always thought that is was some kind of diversion (sort of) and BB validated it.

The 35 year mystery for me has been solved.

Ditto...I thought that was solely to get the defense to jump. Didn't realize their was more to it then that.

What about diabolical schemes? Any mention?

The thing is that for 95% of the current NFL fan base, Landry is perceived as this old, fuddy-duddy who wore a suit, weird hat and who let the game pass him by. That persona is completely unfair.

In actuality, BB IS Tom Landry. Loved military guys. Innovator. Precise. Long-term, sustained success. Great evaluator of talent as it related to his system, Leveraged statistical analysis. Defensive coach. Pushed the boundaries of NFL rules. Hated the press. Winning. Super Bowls and created a brand of play unable to be duplicated.

From the article: “But after not years but after a couple of decades really of running the same thing you build up a lot of volume but there’s a reason for everything and each play has a complement and if you’re not really in that system, I think it would be hard to start up somewhere else."

How much you wanna bet that this is exactly what is on Tom and Bill's minds?....The year 2022, when a 45 year old Brady and a 70 year old Belichick finally achieve football perfection.

THEN they retire.

Really puts into perspective the fans of teams that get new coaches/qbs every few years. To them it looks like the Patriots' dynasty is either magic or cheating. He just answered perfectly (within a historical/educational context) why the pats own the league.....and why they WILL own the league for years to come (if they feel like it).

My spin: Goodell might as well drop his pants, bend over, kiss his dream of parity goodbye, and wait this one out before he loses his cushy $40 mil/year job.

And both unflappable because of being so prepared. Never cared for the emotional coaches like Ryan and Carroll. As a player, you want the head guy to be in control, like BB at the end of the SB not panicking. The only time I saw any emotion from Landry was when Jackie Smith dropped that ball in the endzone.

that was a great article. I hope the Dallas fans appreciated the great lesson BB taught them about their own team's history. I know I did. It probably pissed Jerry Jones off since he's done his best to pretty much get people to forget pre-Jones Cowboy history over the last few decades

Thanks again for bringing that article to our attention. Once again I'm reminded why I'm so glad that Bill Bellichick is my team's HC.

As a little kid, my favorite team was Dallas, mostly though because I loved Roger Staubach. I remember the O Line doing the standing up motion particularly on third down I believe. Many Cowboys games are my first memories of this game.

Between the lines, BB also explains why other Patriots guys have troubles becomeing HCs and bringing Patriots schemes with them ;)

So you can start the clock and see when BoB returns

And by the way -- when Tom Landry was replaced, that was an upgrade. But Jerry Jones didn't stay the course with the new regime, instead having a falling out with his old roommate Jimmy Johnson. And things turned sour from there.

It's not enough to hire the right guys; you have to keep them.

Did the 4 letter network pick this up, or are they content with the BB is a grumpy old bastard and he never answers questions at his press conferences???

Really enjoy his historical, intellectual perspective..

You're discussing a level of coverage that is basically Mike Reiss. So you shouldn't be assuming general ESPN awfulness.

Although he works for ESPN, never really associate Reiss with the vitriol spewn by the larger network. The larger is group relies on tired sound bytes instead of reporting sports news..

My guess is that if Reiss had a really good offer from a local media outlet, he would be gone..

Agreed. He was coach for 29 years by keeping an even keel. He was 65 when he was dismissed by Jerrah. BB is 63.

Pretty amazing to consider that on those 1950s Giants teams Landry was the DC and Vince Lombardi was the OC. Talk about high-powered coaching staffs.

In the later years under Ray Perkins and Tuna Crap, those coaches were Belichick and Coughlin. No slouches there either.

It seems to me ESPN has marginalized Reiss and his fine work. From star/work horse to JAG. No longer is it his operation

Is there a transcript or an actual video/audio of this?

The Landry-era Cowboy's were before my time, so I'm not sure about their specific style when using it, but I've always been fascinated by formation shifting. We're seeing it at the goal-line this year in NE. The 99 Rams did this a ton with Martz at OC (that's where I first noticed it). Considering the outcome of SB 36, I'd especially like to hear Belichick's every word on the subject. Fascinating style of offense. Fascinating.
