Through the first 4 weeks PFF ranked all the Offensive Lines. We were ranked #7:

"7. New England Patriots (23rd last year)

Pass blocking rank: 7th

Run blocking rank: 11th

Penalties rank: 15th

Stud: Maybe the best right tackle of his generation, the consistency of Sebastian Vollmer (+8.4) should be admired.

Dud: While Shaquille Mason (-5.0) has struggled in pass protection, given the Georgia Tech offense he came from, it could have been much worse in that regard.

Summary: The Patriots have offered up a rotation of sorts, and as much as you’d think it wouldn’t work, it’s provided an increase in production from the group. Maybe the New England head coach knows what he’s doing after all …"

Really, based on how PFF does their data = 23d last year. Boy that team must not have even made the playoffs ;)
I don't think these guys are right every time but most of us agree the pats oline last year was rather poor, 23rd seems a little low but not unrealistic

A lot of this strikes me as small sample size, obviously it's only week 5 but I think we can all agree that the oline has played pretty well

I don't know, meat. I think we should all take PFF's analytical breakdowns with a grain of salt, but heading into week #17 vs. BUF (where they rested most of the starters, including Brady only playing a half at most), the OL had only given up about 20 sacks.

Anytime you can get into that 20 or below type or range, you've got to admire the job that the OL did. As we know, they struggled early on, so it's possible that negatively skewed their metrics.

Once Garappolo came in, they ended up giving up another handful of sacks, but I look to that "20" number as a pretty good representation of their year. Much like you, I'd agree that #23 seems a bit too low. As a matter of fact, anything below 12-15 seems low, even with some of the run blocking issues. As we know, there were other games where the run blocking was excellent, so that should even things out a bit.

PFF is such a joke. I'm not playing the game of agreeing with favorable stats and disagreeing with unfavorable ones. They have come up with enough idiotic garbage that they have ZERO credibility to me.

Wouldn't care if they rated Brady as the greatest to ever play the game...until they stop with moronic things that prove their bias, subjectivity, and naivety of the actual game itself, I can't take their opinion as more valid than your average message board homer.

Ehh I've been impressed with the play of the OL, but how much of it has to do with Brady getting rid of the ball so quickly?

I don't want to call this group elite yet, until they can really have their way with a dominate DL.

I do agree about their assessment on Vollmer.

I suspect Brady getting rid of the ball so quickly has covered up some of their flaws. Still, I'm really impressed with this group. I was worried about it heading into the season with 3 rookies none of whom were drafted earlier than the fourth round. These guys deserve a lot of credit. Mason was thought to be a project with his pass blocking, but you have to be happy and encouraged with what he's done so far. By next season, with a healthy Stork, this could be an elite unit. Hopefully even by the end of this season.

Injuries have held Vollmer back from being an elite RT year in/year out.

When he is healthy, he is an elite pass and run blocker.

also some of those "sacks" were more from Garappolo's lack of awareness and him trying to scramble than anything else. Also PFF is going to include the good and the bad, we cant really exclude the parts that were bad because they might have been better if Brady was in

Vollmer is a stud. All time team record bench press. OL best vertical jump. The pats have been fortunate to have this guy as long as they have playing a position that doesn't get a lot of recognition or flashy stats. The picture was from 2013.

Interesting mix of good and JAG players. Nothing for the position players who are in the discussion for GOAT -- Brady, Gronk, Revis, arguably Moss, although the latter two of course joined past their athletic peaks. Mayo's the best LB on that board, although I guess it's pre-Collins. Asante is the best CB. Vollmer is the best OL. No Troy, but Edelman, Welker, Branch, and Patten all make appearances. So does Reche Caldwell. Etc.

All true. My point is, evaluating this guys position requires leaning heavily on the eye ball test. He's passes that and then some on my eyes. All time team bench press has a nice ring to it too.
