It is just so hard to remember the 2007 team fondly because for many of us it was the biggest gut punch of our lives when they lost. I absolutely loved the team and followed them fanatically all season. More than any other team I have ever seen, though, this was such a Super Bowl or bust situation. They had once-in-a-generation talent all over the field. I still don't know how the F they lost that SB.

Exactly. Give 2007 a defense like 2014 and this conversation is null and void. All the homers forget that it was the defense that won it in the end for 2014 and it was the D giving up that helmet catch that ultimately lost it for us (many say welker) in 07. Add Lafell and vereen(13 catches in SB and a few went for 1st downs) and you should be able to flex a little more offensively. BB said if you take away moss and jam welker that they were done. Gronk and Jules didn't see the coverage moss and wes saw because of lafell and vereen and i believe a slightly better o line for brady to get in a groove.

You are confusing numerous seasons in this post. You also overlook the fact that the 2007 defense only allowed 17 points even with the drive at the end, whereas the 2014 squad let up 24, another drive to the 1 yard line, and 31 in an earlier playoff game. Chiding 2007 for the helmet catch is another oddity considering 2014 allowed an equally unlikely reception.

1. Starting RT was an Oxy addict.

2. Starting RG was injured during the second quarter. His replacement was the guy from the hot dog stand.

3. See @unoriginal 's thread about the comprehensive breakdown of the O-Line.

4. Walkthrough-gate arising the day before the game.

5. Issues with the team hotel that week.

6. Ermagerd! The Giants cheated! Holding on the Helmet Catch!

7. Asante Samuel forgetting how to catch a football and not playing to the whistle on the Helmet Catch.

8. Poor Junior Seau showing early signs of mental issues by insisting on staying with the all-out blitz on the game-losing touchdown despite Rodney asking him to call it off.

In summary: it just wasn't meant to be.

put it this way. if 2014 and 2004 pats met in the SB, my money is on 2014. BB & brady are wise beyond years, and our great 2004 D won't have answer to brady/gronk/jules.. and we had a chip on our shoulders. we played like it was the last game we'll ever play.

That would be a bad ass game! While we're dreaming, can we have 1994 Brady and 2024 Brady be the game's commentators?

The 2004 team could scheme pretty well. Held the best offense to three and laid 41 on the league's best defense.

I can't really say who would win, but it could come down to an automatic Adam field goal.

And the 2004 Secondary wouldn't be used to the rules that make defending the pass nearly impossible.

Now if they played under 2004 rules...hmm...

Immediately before the helmet catch there was major holding on Seymour and Green. got screwed there bad.

Do you have a pointer to a story about that? I'd never heard that before.

I keep hearing that there were problems in the hotel the week before the game. Can you tell me what went wrong there?

And would care to link @unoriginal's thread please? :)

Harrison also looked back at the Giants Super Bowl he lost. He explained that he knew something was wrong before the play. He said the Pats were in an all-out blitz. So he tried to change the call. But Junior Seau wanted to blitz and wouldn’t change that call. We all know what happened — Eli Manning hit Plaxico Burress, who was being covered by 5-foot-8 Ellis Hobbs.

I'll have to see if I can find something. IIRC, there were issues at their original hotel so they moved to another that turned out to be in an area with gunfire and other sleep-depriving issues.

I recommend having a few drinks before reading it:

The only teams that I felt had no chance at a SB championship at Thanksgiving were 02, 09, and 13. 2005 had a big cloud over it because there was just no way that team was going into Indy and winning. Who knew that Pitt would do our dirty work for us? 2004, 2007, 2003, 2014, and 2010 would be my top 5 in that order.

I agree. Even then in those years there was a ray of light if health holds up.

In 02 if they squeak in they get Indy at home. NYJ beat them 41-0. Assuming they win that game, they play at OAK. OAK was solid and that might have gotten ugly. However, BB vs Bill Callahan? I know the Pats got killed during the reg season but I gotta think it would have been a lot closer in the playoff game. If the beat OAK then they play TN again which in the reg season was a disaster. Overall I agree with you. It would have been a daunting task to play @ OAK and @ TN.

In 05, if they get past DEN they would have played Pitt @ home. I like that game. Oh well.

In 09 with WW makes them more competitive vs BAL. However there were too many structural issues with that team. However a 4th and 2 conversion gets them the win @ Indy that year. If they win @ Indy (the game BAL lost after they beat the Pats) they get NYJ in Foxboro....meh.

2013...Healthy Gronk and Talib makes it very interesting vs DEN. Very.

Woulda, shoulda, coulda....

I also cannot put 07 above the 4 SB teams. There was no reason we should have lost that game. McD called a poor game. Samuel whiffs on an INT. Ref is holding his whistle instead of blowing it when we clearly had Eli sacked. Too much BS all around in that game. Giants got the SB handed to them that night on a silver platter.
