Semi OT: Education of Steve Belichick

Don Shula's son had to go through a similar path after his playing days. So did the Ryan boys. Sounds like the kid has some coaching skills and assets beyond his father's last. I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave in a couple of years to work for another team and organization to further grow his skills and develop his own name, then come back after his dad is retired and work for Josh.

Where does this idea come from that Josh McD is the heir apparent to BB?

Is there something more substantial than peoples' imaginations to back that up?

BB knocked himself out to help Josh McD prepare for the Denver job. That was well-reported. There are no stories of him doing that for anybody else.

Josh McD is also the only person that BB has rehired as an OC or DC.

That's about all the "Josh McD is special" evidence I can think of.

The Jets are already planning to hire him. That's good for Steve because everyone needs to fail to learn from his mistakes.

Signbabybrady has been on this plan for years!
So your one of those vocals about the 3 year rule, why go to college when you can take them in high school....

Not surprising that he is focusing on the defensive side of the game... will Bill make him go work for another organization to help him gain perspective???

Weren't Matt Patricia and Nick Caserio "Coaching Assistants" also, there is a piece by Reiss about Patrick Graham taking the same path.. all of these guys are very intelligent, who have become "football smart" this way..

More of a hope than direct knowledge. Despite the Denver fiasco. Josh is good enough to get a 2nd chance. In fact he is likely to be a top 3 candidate for a job at the end of the season. Except for a few reasons, there is every reason to think this could be Josh's last season in NE. And hopefully in his next job he might avoid a lot of the pitfalls that befell him in Denver.

Here are the speculations that might keep him here.

1. He loves the NE area. His family is established here and he'd rather not move them.

2. He's been promised the HC job when BB leaves. BB has often said he didn't see himself coaching in his 70's like Marv Levy, so it's likely to happen sometimes within the next 3 or 4 years.

3. He wants to finish out the Brady era. They are a great team, and best friends. This and the first 2 reason could combine to keep him here until Tom and Bill bow out.

4. If he stays, he'd likely get to keep most of the coaching and scouting staff, all of who know the program. If he leaves he will have to build up an entirely new organization.

5. He'll have complete control of football operations here. It might be tough to get that kind of control and trust elsewhere.

6. Lastly, who else? Who else better knows the language, system, and has a better feel for the Patriot way than Josh.....and who else has already made the rookie mistakes.

Personally I think it's a done deal. The ONLY issue is whether Josh will be patient enough to wait until Bill wraps it up.

Great article! Thanks for linking.

I was just thinking about that. I wonder if prior to accepting the Denver job, McDaniels had stipulated that it takes time to build a successful team, and that the only way for a football team to succeed is for the owner to be hands-off and trust that the football people he hired are competent, and furthermore made those conditions a part of the terms of his contract.

I honestly believe he didn't, and got neither in Denver.

As an alum of one of the schools that Rivers plays in football, I don't know if I should be p*ssed or thrilled that BB was breaking down film of how to beat them....
A friend of mine had a son who played lacrosse at Rivers with Steve and he said Bill attended most games (pretty impressive for a guy with his job) and was "just like every other parent"....

One more thought about josh taking over is that it had been assumed that wherever he went, he would take Caserio with him, since they have been partners since college.

With Caserio signed til the end of the decade, it will be interesting to see if Josh will step out on his own without surrounding himself with the people to give him the best chance for success.

Pretty informative and eye opening article IMO.

Interesting part is he was sent by himself to scout and work out Grissom. That's a pretty big deal to me.

That was one of the best articles I've read in a very long time. Thanks for sharing this!

I'm curious to know what kind of play-caller Steve B. wants to be. Offensive Coordinator? Or Defensive Coordinator?

Personally I think it's a done deal. The ONLY issue is whether Josh will be patient enough to wait until Bill wraps it up.

He's the highest paid Assistant Coach in the NFL.... that's a good sign that Belichick and the Krafs really want him to stay

Is this rumor, or fact? Does anyone know how much any Patriots FO person gets?

BB is transcendent. I'm glad it seems the younger Belichick is progressing but it'd be a stretch to think he can approach BB's levels.
Potential is developed when you are young. Given his early, deep exposure, , he could develop some serious potential, even if his is base metal makeup isn't particularly well suited to coaching. It sounds like he's "smart", is good at teaching and can block out the noise. Circumstances may keep him from rivaling his father's achievements, but I suspect his makeup and early exposure will result in a heckuva coach someday.

The average salary for an assistant coach in the NFL is $150k-450k. At roughly 1.5 million dollars per season, McDaniels is one of the highest paid assistants in the league.

I wonder what role he would like to get, it sounds like he is quite knowledgeable on all facets of the game. I had wondered if he would get a bigger role on special teams but that didn't happen; maybe he will end up getting hired by someone out of the BB tree at a college program
