Prediction – Bye Week Trade Coming…

Unfortunately there is no way he hangs around at his current salary. They won't exercise his option next year, making him a free agent. It's very possible they resign him at a significantly reduced rate but I have a feeling Rex Ryan or another team like the Colts will be all over him and make a higher offer

His salary cap space needs to be removed and replaced with Hightower next contract

We have something like 20 million in dead money coming off the books next year so with Mayos cap space freed up, they should be able to extend Hightower, Jones and Solder. They also need to make sure they have room for Collins, and Butler is only on a 2 or 3 year deal I think and will want to be paid but they don't have to worry about that in 2016

Soldier signed a two year extension, are you talking about his next deal after that?

I agree with all of this. He's not staying on his current deal. Maybe he plays a year somewhere else like Vrabel or McGinest and then comes back. He clearly wants to be on the Patriots, though. Another restructure wouldn't surprise me.

If he's getting another contract, he needs to be on the ****ing field and contributing. Has he even played 20 snaps this year yet?

I don't think we're ever getting rid of Mayo. I think he retires a Patriot and then becomes a linebacker coach.

And who was the last to retire as a patriot and become a coach?

Players like to play. Coaching is a really terrible job. Why would Mayo take on such a job.

Because he's their only big money contract.
I think that Bears WR Alshon Jeffrey can be had as mentioned by some scribes as the Bears clean house. Another that might be had is not CB Joe Hayden but the talented former first rounder CB Justin Rogers from the Browns who seems lost. He is only 23. Kid could develop here. I actually like their Desir better (6'2") but do not think the Browns trade him.

1) I agree that won't be traded. Belichick loves the guy and we owe him less than $1.5M to play the rest of
the year.

2) You can judge that Mayo at $1.2M for the rest of the year (with a 2016 option) has more trade value than an $8M Mayo at the end of the season. I disagree. I guess, the best case is that we cut him and he gets a big contract elsewhere and we get a 2017 3rd.

3) Yes, I agree that we will be very glad to have Mayo if one of our starters is injured. Ditto for Polo and lots of other backups.

4) Absent injuries, the marginal value of Mayo in the base isn't all that large. Mayo was splitting time with Freeney this week. Presumably, Bostic will get some reps in the future. However, there is value, and Mayo will contribute.

I think there's a bit of a misunderstanding regarding #2. I'm not claiming that he has "more trade value" next year, just that we should deal with 2016 when it happens.

In other words, his restructure brought his 2016 cap hit to 11.4 million dollars, with a potential cap savings of 7 million dollars. Either we see a substantial cap savings and get a compensation pick similar to what he'd currently bring now, or he takes a pay cut and they agree to keep him. That will be done after the season.

Either way, they aren't getting much for him right now, and would also have to eat a 3m dollar loss if they trade him. Neither of those situations make sense for a trade.

Belichick loves to address team needs during the bye week via trade. Last season we incorporated Ayers, Branch, and Casillas around the bye.

I am thinking they will bring in a CB, I do not think it will be Joe Haden, but I do think it will be a solid NFL CB.

Well. I think you nailed this one on the head, except no CB.

Yea pretty much all trade predictions on this thread were shot down today.

Too early for a trade. No team is going to admit their season is over this early. The Pats won't make a trade until late October.
Would you please tell me what you expect for the economy, so I know whether to short or go long?

I'm guessing that they are allowing him to acclimate due to the long period of hardly playing football. They did a similar thing with Gronk last season for the first couple/few games (or was it 2013?).

As others have mentioned, Mayo should be contributing just fine when the snow starts to fall and we're facing more teams who are primarily run heavy. I don't know if he gets another contract or not, but I'm fine with where he is this year, considering his situation coming off of the injury.

LOL! I look silly now, but it is unusual for teams to admit giving up on the season this early like the Bears have. You rarely see trades this early in the league and this week alone there were three trades.

I also didn't factor the early bye. The Pats haven't had an early bye like this since 2004. So I guess I never factored that an extra week to get players up to speed this early might prompt Belichick to make early trades.

BB certainly has leveraged the bye week as he seems to have the whole season. If we give him the GM hat and I only think we do because he is the final decision marker if one needs to be made, then I believe this year has been his best leveraging the best team he can put on the field. And that is following last year which until this year I thought was his best. The checkers chess analogy is not overblown with him.

Well, Belichick has a further 13 games to integrate acquired players into the team. That's roughly 5-7 weeks more than normal. Whatever level Belichick is on, it's absurd. He and his team are so far ahead of the rest of the NFL it isn't funny. As a strategist, it's a pure joy to watch him work.

I think there are some people on this board that think Bruce Arians is on a higher level. You know because they've played two of the ****iest teams in the nfl the last 2 weeks and haven't given up two garbage time last minute TD drives that have skewed their defensive rankings a bit.

Because you take those two drives away and the Pats are a top 10 defensive unit and they'd look even better had they some better play calling at the end of the buffalo game.
