theScore - Report: Bears trade Jon Bostic to Patriots

bostic has yet to step onto a field this year and missed all of training camp.......ankle and back

BTW, Bostic is 1 year younger than Jamie Collins. :)
That's one of the few negatives I can see in Collins right now. He's not that young for being in his third year in the league. Atleast he's no Brandon Weeden who might miss a game because it's bridge night at his elderly home

Trade is dead. Bears said it comes with a free Jay Cutler in which BB politely declined and the Bears then said the trade actually had to include Cutler. They got as desperate as to include three first round picks, the Chicago Cubs and the key to the city before BB finally had to hang up.
Cubs wouldn't be a bad trade. They're winning the World Series this year. I know. I saw it in Back to the Future II.

Mayo was a bad contract. People here said he was one of the top middle linebackers in the game. Since his contract, he's spent 2 years injured and now is basically a backup. A lot of money to pay for a guy who only plays half the snaps this season and hasn't played the last two.
And I don't think its about scheme -- if he was better, Bill would figure out a way to get all 3 linebackers in there -- 3-3-5, 3-4-5, 4-3-5. Only reason we're using 4-2-5 for half the snaps is because Mayo isn't playing up to his expectation.

Can't say I agree with this. In fact, I pretty much disagree with all of it. :)

Price was steep.... 2017 4th rounder

I read it was a 6th rounder pending a physical

Edit: ouch he got me!

Interesting. I think this move does involve Mayo but the question is does it involve this year or next year.

Mayo will be on the team for the entire season as insanely high quality depth and rotation. They won't pick his option up next year though, and will end up getting a compensatory pick for him in 2017

I love this trade. We don't have much depth at LB, I personally think that Bostic is a talented and will help against the run. Great trade

I think Fox is a good coach, not a great one but a good one. Surprised Bears have been so poor so far.
It's spelled C-U-T-L-E-R.

Jamie Collins is 25 years old....that's OLD to you, Marinlik?

The report I saw was a sixth rounder. Or is this some joke I'm missing?

Hehe he got me too... should be some rules about tricking people so early in the morning, I wasn't even half way done my coffee!

The upcoming compensatory picks (projected 3, 5, 6, and 6) give them extra flexibility to do things like this. I'm not reading too much into it except that Belichick obviously thinks he's an upgrade over somebody at something.

Until the NFL* figures out a way to take those picks away. You know that they are working on that as we type. There is no way they can let the Patriots "cheat the system" and earn compensatory picks for players they had no intention of signing. :)

I wish the bears would trade kyle fuller. Just blow it up

I'm simply lumping the entire front seven together.
There is only so much cap to go around unless you are Denver.

And Seattle apparently..

Still scratching my head on how they were able to give out all of those top contracts to so many players, still pay wilson, still pay lynch and trade for Jimmy Graham.

Damm near every position on their defense has a top 5 contract lol

Someone has to be released from the 53 today. Watson? Hooman? Fletcher?

Good question, and probably not the no-brainer decision that some might think for BB.
  • One could argue Watson because of the addition of another LB in Bostic, but he is young and still probably has upside.
  • Hooman would save some money and he has clearly slipped to the #4 TE, but the #3 TE Mike Williams isn't really a conventional TE at over 300 lbs, he is almost like another OL.
  • I'm sure many are chomping at the bit to release Fletcher (and given his production so far that may make the most sense), but he has better size than the other corners.
    • The Patriots were able to somehow figure out how to get good production from a big CB in Browner last year. That is a credit to the Patriot coaches, because he has completely crashed and burned in New Orleans, where they evidently haven't figured out how to use him.
