theScore - Report: Bears trade Jon Bostic to Patriots

Has he been any better at anything else or just scaled down so that his strongest suit is awful?

From the little I saw of him, he is missing tackles. So maybe it's a technique thing and BB can fix him.

Fencer quoted this above:
Bostic's struggles had less to do with his athletic ability and more to do with his inability to make the correct reads, fill his correct gaps.
To be clear, Bostic's speed would've meshed well with Fangio's system. His inability to shed blocks, would not have fit at all.

Having watched every college game of his & a bit with the Bears, this is spot-on.

He is a force when he gets going, hits hard like Spikes and has good agility, but he has always made mistakes in filling the proper gap & tends to overrun plays whether filling a gap or running to the sideline. When he is in the right position he is a great tackler & hard hitter, but if he is blocked often seems unsure of how he should shed that block (technique might be an issue). Those issues don't provide him the opportunity to make a lot of impactful plays in the backfield. He is better in coverage than Spikes was here, but hands of stone and more risk-adverse.

Smart guy & used to making the calls, and being the leader of the defense in college from his Sophomore season on. Team first guy who always played special teams even as a starter. He's a great project for BB.

What is it with this places hard on for getting rid of Mayo?

Belichick loves him and he's essentially an extra coach, not to mention a damn fine player.

This trade is great depth and more options.

I think Matt Patricia should hire Mayo's agent to negotiate his next DC contract then.

As for the trade, I like it a lot. My guess is this kid will flourish with some good coaching. High upside.

Great find, thanks.

The college reports sounded more like he was a run stopper, but BB singles him out as good in coverage, fast, smart, and versatile. The latter two traits BB is ALWAYS looking for and the first two are always necessary in today's pass-happy nfl.

Seems like a good deal, now if he is just past the thigh-shin problems radiating to his back...bye week is good for him to get healthy and integrate

I'm going to give Jon Bostic's first few seasons a wash for a few reasons:

1. Marc Trestman was a bad coach
2. John Fox is an average coach and Denver's LBs haven't exactly been great over the years
3. The verdict is still out on Vic Fangio because he was spoiled with Patrick Willis and Navarro Bowman

I think its fairly obvious what bb plans has been since he lost revis and cut browner...refocus the teams resources on a relentless front 7. We have the most versatile from 7 in the league. With the offense putting up so many points if we have this many options on the front 7 we can fo full gas for 60 min.. Teams will have a hard time finding enough time to throw on us. Our front 7 is a work in progress by the end of the year we will be unstopable.

I always hated Bostic..what the hell do they want this fat ba$tard for anyway??

oh...wait...o_O

Belichick has foreseen the future. Bostic will level Micah Hyde on a punt return, cause a fumble, and return it for a game clinching touchdown in the last two minutes of SB 50 against the Packers.

This guy will never pay for another drink in Boston as long as he lives.

Goodell will suspend Belichick 8 games for scrying.

Yup, Scrygate.

You heard it here first.

you're presuming Goodell will still exist....

He did have 141 tackles last year to lead the team.

When did you see that? Cause he led the Bears in tackles last year with 141 and he hasn't played this year.

yeah..but they were 141 of the most overrated tackles ever...:D

Really? I must have seen a bad game then. I'm glad I'm wrong.

Rich Hill is excellent. What he wrote should be MUST READING for anyone on this subject

OK, I'm on board. This is a GREAT move for value (we STILL have 3 untradeable 6th round picks left).

Truly, the only concern I have about this player is health. Ankle and back problems have shelved him this offseason and the first 3 weeks of the regular season.

Goodell is on the rampage, the Patriots are not supposed to be getting worse not better.

This reminds me of Akeem Ayers and Jonathan Casillas last year, guys who struggle in other systems, but come here and the Pats utilize their strengths to help them..

Bostic knows that coming here will jumpstart his career, and probably provide lucrative financial rewards.. much like Ayers and Casillas..

Not sure this move necessarily means anything about Mayo. BB may have just found a good player on a rookie contract for a bargain and said **** it.
