Prediction – Bye Week Trade Coming…

This guy sounds an awful lot like Mayo.

Don't you have some difficulty trying to project compensation for Jerod Mayo, though?

I mean, why would New England sell so low? He's clearly at the lowest point of his career, with the least amount of value, and a contract that he already restructured in the spring.

What would we be able to get for that? It seems that he has much more value to NE this year, and then they'll deal with next year, next year.

Stop it, we're not getting rid of Mayo until he gets his 2nd ring.

???
Mayo will be worth nothing after the season. His 2016 compensation is $8M.

If someone traded for Mayo now, they would have him at $1.5M for 2015 and $8M for 2016.

What does that have to do with him being at his lowest selling point of his career? If you're speaking only on the financial aspect, it would cost Belichick 3m dollars to trade him this year. His dead cap hit is 9m dollars, with a 6.1 cap hit, so we're 3m dollars in the red no matter what.

As for my point about trade compensation--people are claiming that we'd be able to get 2nd round draft picks and starting caliber CBs for trade compensation. That's ridiculous. Mayo may bring a 4th round pick at best right now.

He has more value here in N.England than other teams for 2015, at least until he proves himself again. If Hightower goes down, watch how much Jerod Mayo means to us, with the experience and knowledge of our system.

If he were playing at an all-pro level, what do you think he would get? A third-rounder, at most? It's not player for pick, because they're never even, it's player for player with picks thrown in.

To answer your question, I'd have to think you've pretty much nailed it with the 3rd round guess, and that's if he's back to playing at a pro bowl level again. It's certainly not going to be any higher than that, which is one of the reasons why I'm not seeing much interest from either side in a potential deal.

Mayo restructured his contract in the spring though. He carries a dead cap hit of 9m dollars, and we'd only save about 6m dollars from dumping the cap hit. In other words, we're still upside down 3m dollars, unless I'm missing something.

That would have to be one hell of a player-for-player trade with picks thrown in, at least in my opinion. Like I said before, I think the Patriots deal with Mayo next year. I'd be interested in hearing Miguel's thoughts on this.

Thing is, I like the idea of the Browns dealing at 0-3, rather than at 0-0 and thinking "We got this, THIS is the year, no trading."

Oh, I'm just speaking solely on the idea of trading Jerod Mayo, that's all. I think we got our paths crossed a bit. I take it that you're bringing up the possibility of the Joe Haden trade?

As far as Mayo goes, this originally got started when I commented on another poster's thoughts that today's trade (Bostic) "sounds a lot like Mayo," which got the trade talk fired up again. I just think that nothing else makes much sense aside from Mayo finishing out his year here, and then N.England can realize a 7m dollar cap savings by cutting him in the offseason. If I recall correctly, Mayo's cap hit for 2016 is now in the double digit range.

I hear where you're coming from. I suppose that would depend on whether or not they are attempting to build around Haden, or if they're trying to have a fire sale? It's hard to project, since they suck every year.

Of course, Belichick's feelings on the matter would come into play as well, so I really don't have much of an opinion aside from the low likelihood of giving up a high(er) draft pick when we're already limited, and the concern for paying a player outside of the system a bigger contract. If he's all for it, I know that I'd be excited as a fan.

Well that's the crux of it. I'm under no illusions that he would actually do that. Then again, I didn't think he'd pay Revis $12mm last year either.

I think he's been able to address trade issues at the bye because the Pats have had the bye later in the season lately. Seems a bit early for teams to know if or who they want to jettison already.
Um...unless you're the Bears?

Never mind...

LSD is making a comeback....this thread should be in paisley

1) I agree that won't be traded. Belichick loves the guy and we owe him less than $1.5M to play the rest of
the year.

2) You can judge that Mayo at $1.2M for the rest of the year (with a 2016 option) has more trade value than an $8M Mayo at the end of the season. I disagree. I guess, the best case is that we cut him and he gets a big contract elsewhere and we get a 2017 3rd.

3) Yes, I agree that we will be very glad to have Mayo if one of our starters is injured. Ditto for Polo and lots of other backups.

4) Absent injuries, the marginal value of Mayo in the base isn't all that large. Mayo was splitting time with Freeney this week. Presumably, Bostic will get some reps in the future. However, there is value, and Mayo will contribute.

I don't think we're ever getting rid of Mayo. I think he retires a Patriot and then becomes a linebacker coach.

Unfortunately there is no way he hangs around at his current salary. They won't exercise his option next year, making him a free agent. It's very possible they resign him at a significantly reduced rate but I have a feeling Rex Ryan or another team like the Colts will be all over him and make a higher offer

His salary cap space needs to be removed and replaced with Hightower next contract

We have something like 20 million in dead money coming off the books next year so with Mayos cap space freed up, they should be able to extend Hightower, Jones and Solder. They also need to make sure they have room for Collins, and Butler is only on a 2 or 3 year deal I think and will want to be paid but they don't have to worry about that in 2016
