it's all about accuracy. Watching other games, so many drives end on a bad 3rd down throw. Brady keeps the chains moving, which leads to points. Yes, so simplistic, but only a handful can do it consistantly.

Wish Dobson had better hands. He's got speed and is a big body. He did get us that PI.

Still, he dropped that slant TD that LaFell would probably have caught.

Can't wait for Jojo to come back.

Overall a good performance, but the Pats D on 3rd and long was concerning. BB's teams tend to improve, so let's see how they're doing in November.

The Pat's offensive gameplan was very smart. Instead of marching out the 4 TE sets, they put quicker, more athletic guys out there to counter the Jag's big, fast defense. Early on, they seemed to run the ball every time they saw the Jags in man coverage, which is why I think they ran so much for TDs.

I think BB was confident in his team winning this game. It seemed, from the beginning, that he was giving a lot of reps to depth guys. People may not think this team is as good as the 07 team, but they have much greater depth. The 07 team started out crazy fast, but the league started figuring it out toward the end. This young team is going to keep improving, and could possibly score the most points ever.

Besides 3rd and long, the defense played well today. The defense might get burned once in a while, but they are young, athletic, keep their cool and never seem confused. I suspect the defense will be very good by the time the playoffs come around.

Jamie Collins was an absolute beast in the running game this week. It's not just that there's no weakness in his game, there isn't a LB responsibility that he doesn't excel at. IMO, he's the best LB in the game.

Did anyone see Sheard push Jordan Richards outside when Bortles was sprinting towards the edge in the drive after the Pats got 44? Sheard is such a smart player, BB must be thrilled in that signing.

Gronk was making pancakes all game. He could easily play OT in a pinch.

Would really like a later bye week and a tougher schedule. Last year's gauntlet really seemed to forge this team into a SB champion. That said, Deflategate has gelled this team, so perhaps the effects of a weak schedule won't be significant.

It's professional football, not tiddlywinks. If Brady's afraid of getting hit, he should retire.

He's not afraid of getting hit, neither is Belichick, so why are you?

Kevin Harlon started the "Brady is still in the game" ******** in the third quarter. Why are the Patriots the only team expected to pull their QB and stop trying before the end of the game?

By the way, the Steelers were only up 9-3 at that time. I'm pretty sure the starting QB would be in the game at that point.

It's not about fear to get hit, it's proven Brady can handle some beat, it's about to got giving a chance to bad luck, in the NFL in any given play a catastrophe can happen. I'm not saying he should sit in the 3rd quarter since I'm also against that, but with 10 min left in the game, not sure, it was totally out of hand.

The comparison with the Steelers game is that when Ben got injured he was also in the middle of a collapsed pocket trying to get out of it, 9-3 is obviously not a situation where you sit a starter.

Agreed. I don't Dobson has been bad, but it's always been LaFell's job when he comes back. Dobson was going to need a dynamic five games to wrestle it away from him, and he hasn't shown that thus far. Still, I'm encouraged that he provides some depth at the position, which is more than we had last year.

Granted I don't have access to the All-22, but to my eye, it looked like the Pats played a ton of Cover 1 yesterday which surprised me. Tells me Belichick feels good about Brown's ability to handle his assignment. Can anyone else confirm that?

Yep. They need someone to back up LaFell. The reason Dobson is still there has been a stunning lack of competition. Hopefully, Martin changes that.
You hit the nail on the head. I think they like him because he does most of the things Lafell does, just not as good. I see the value in having back ups that are like the starter. It simplifies the offense for one but at the end of the day, you have to have confidence the guy is going to catch a pass when you need it.

Did Brown even play? I thought I heard he was on the sideline the whole game (even though he was active). Your question would still be valid though, as it meant he trusted guys like Ryan and Coleman to handle their business.

Or he felt like everyone on the Jags after Robinson was hot garbage.

If you're referring to Terell Brown, then I must say he didn't play at all yesterday. The secondary, to me, has not looked half bad. Other than Ben, I know they haven't played top notch QB's. The good thing is we have few of those on the schedule this season anyway.

I don't know. Put me in the camp that feels the D is performing well as a unit. And so long as those LB's are playing the way they are (and Sheard), I see good things ahead for this D as constructed. I know they'll get better as the season goes on and I don't think this iteration can possibly be any worse than 2011 (though I know the past is the past). I'm encouraged with what I have seen so far this season, at the very least.

Think BB was confident we would win so he sat brown and gave young guys more reps to get valuable experience. Same reason Brady was in late is so he could get chemistry with backups in real situation.

Yeah. I was watching the game from a bar so I didn't catch the inactives.

2. The only reason I think they kept Brady in there was Belichick wanted the team to play all 60 minutes instead of 50 minutes and let up. Just a subtle reminder to develop that killer instinct and not let the opponent back into the game with a chance to win.

Good point, especially after we let our foot off the accelerator somewhat in the first two games. It is really the only somewhat-sensible reason for leaving your 38 year old quarterback in the game in garbage time.

I still think that we would be better off taking Brady out of garbage time and getting some more seasoning for Garoppolo (in case Brady has to miss a game or two with an injury), but for some reason BB hasn't given me a call asking my advice on this issue.

Mike Reiss

Tarell Brown was active but was the only Patriots player not to play a snap. I don’t view this as anything more than a rotation/managing health type situation. Brown was obviously healthy enough to contribute because he was active, but he also seemed to be working through something leg-related on Sept. 20 against the Bills

RE: Mason as the FB. I think he did better than previously. On the sweep right, he ran made it around the end and was at the second level when the back-side CB who was coming across got to Lewis after 10 yards..

I still think that Mason has promise as a Blocking Lead Fullback, he has almost the perfect skill set for it: i) super athletic for an OL; ii) but shorter than most and with shorter arms than most (both irrelevant for a blocking fullback); iii) a human bowling ball when blocking for the running game. He has everything you want except for the ability to pull off a trick play by catching a pass.

I think the only problem is experience, he is a rookie already having to learn how to pass block, and now he is having to learn how to be a fullback also, that is a lot to learn in such a short time. I'm not the play analyst that many on this site are, but there was one play in particular yesterday where he seemed totally confused about who he was supposed to block, and it was obvious even to me.

I really like this kid. I'm hoping that he can improve our run game (mostly as a guard, sometimes as a fullback) so that in Santa Clara in January we aren't passing on 70% of our plays (!!) like we did in the last Superbowl.

This is interesting in how they use Mason at FB and Cannon at OG.

Mason was used as a FB 8 times. When that happened Cannon & Kline played G + Solder & Vollmer. That unit combined for 3 TDs & two 1sts

Supposedly, Brown is nursing a minor injury.

Penalties stalled a drive, Dobson needs to catch that deep ball. Nice special teams play on the fake punt. Nice win. GO PATS!

It would have been better if he had. But he accomplished what BB wanted... respect for the deep/intermediate outside pass reception, that prevents using a sagging Defense against the short pass; and even more limits the necessary YAC that changes those passes from Dink and Dunk to a feared passing attack.

LaFell forces them to honor the intermediate routes, with his toughness, despite his only average speed. Only Dobson consistently beats the coverage deep with his size and speed. PI or Pass completion, the effects are the same. The Ratbirds and Flacco built a complete Offense based on the deep PI/pass completion.
