Aaron Dobson

This is true.

However, against some teams, in some situations, we will need to extend the field. It is very, very useful to have a downfield receiver who can sometimes rate a double team, or at least the other team's corner.

The alternative is that the field is much smaller, with one of the safeties cheating up towards the line.
Wassup, Mg. No doubt the O would benefit from someone who can do what you mentioned. I would never argue against it. I guess my point, more-or-less, is that the O can survive without a legit one. We won the SB with what we had last year, and it's not vastly different this year. In fact, this O can be even better with health and development. Can Dobson be that guy? That remains to be seen.

But your overall point is correct. This O could definitely be even more explosive and unstoppable.

Well he had a decent game last week but then turned back into Dropson yesterday. He does not have enough good games to justify his existence on this roster. When Lafell comes back Dropson will be cut. It's a miracle he lasted this long.

Of course, but given the fact that the Patriots were the top scoring team in the league heading into week 17, they put up an impressive 36ppg in the playoffs and even overcame a 10 point fourth quarter deficit against the best defense in the league.... those situations don't appear as critical as fans make them out to be.

What was the deal with that "drop" at the goal line? They didn't show a replay. Watching it live, it seemed like it was slightly behind Dropson, but I have no idea how catchable it was.
It was behind him and thrown very hard. He should have caught it, but it wasn't an easy catch by any means.

From what I remember it just about hit him in the ear. Didn't look like a difficult catch to me.

It wasn't an easy catch, but WRs should be expected to make not-easy catches from time to time. He should've caught it, and while it isn't a big deal if a guy occasionally fails to haul balls like that in (like when Edelman uncharacteristically missed a couple last week), it is a problem if they consistently don't get them.

At this point, it looks like easy catches are the only ones Dobson can be trusted to make. If that doesn't change, his role in the offense will basically disappear the moment LaFell comes back.

I agree.

Luckily the Pats can and do extend the field without relying on Aaron Dobson.

It was catchable and the difficulty level was not high. Amendola would have caught it.

But, what will we all talk about without Dobson? Looks like I'll have to put my time and energy into actual work/class and stop trying to decipher if Dobson coulda, shoulda, woulda caught a football. ****.

Like everyone else here, I would love to see Dobson become the next Randy Moss. And every time he has a good game or a good catch, I think maybe he is turning the corner and carving out a role for himself. And maybe he will. But I no longer expect it. Full disclosure: I was skeptical of the pick from the start. In the power house Conference USA, Aaron Dobson finished his last season 8th in receptions, 11th in receiving yards, and had only 3 TDs. In the immortal Tommy Shuler and Antavious Wilson, there were two guys on his team who were considerably more productive. Obviously, guys who get paid to figure out which college players will make it in the NFL and know way more than we do saw something they liked. But it is a difficult job and even the best are wrong most of the time (especially, it seems with WRs on the Patriots). At this point, it looks to me like Aaron Dobson is much more likely to wind up on the pile that includes Chad Jackson, Taylor Price, Brandon Tate, Bethel Johnson and Josh Boyce than he is to become a solid NFL contributor. I think that BB traded for Martin because he had concerns about the position. Martin is unlikely to become an all pro, but he runs well, can contribute to STs and can play any of the WR spots. I have no idea what the staff thinks of Dobson, but with LaFell returning to the practice field, my guess is that the next few weeks of practice could be crucial for Aaron Dobson.

I think BB got Martin for his KO/PR returns. He didn't want to expose either Edelman nor Amedola to this hazardous duty. Martin is still too small to fill the Big Spit End position, held by LaFell and Dobson.

Um, Julian Edelman is young and he's a stud. Plus, the Patriots offense is not necessarily predicated on a deep, outside threat. It never was other than when Moss was here and by the time teams caught up to it, the offense stalled very often. People forget how inconsistent the offense became and that was what partly resulted in Moss being jettisoned. Yes, a lot of it was himself, but some of it was the fact that trying to force the ball deep to him was leading to a lot of punting situations/turnovers.

LaFell showed last season what a good outside threat looks like in this offense. Still, they weren't relying on him to catch 10 passes per game. He had a few of those, but his production stayed good even when he was not catching that many passes. I guess my point is we do not need him to be a "stud." We just need him to be adequate and we saw what that can look like last week. If he can start to perform like that a bit more consistently, then I think we should all be happy. It's only week 3 and this is his first real football since shortly before this time last season. Give him a chance. If he does not emerge, I'll be the first to line up and say I was wrong. Until then, the jury is still out and he should be given a fair shake to show what he can do. I believe the Pats are giving him that.

BB doe not try to fit square pegs in round holes.

Long passing is NOT a Particular Brady strength, but it is occasionally needed, to prevent the Defense from collapsing on the bread and butter short/intermediate routes, with lots of YAC.

Even in yesterday's game that so many denigrate, Aaron accomplished his mission! When he went deep, beat his coverage man, and forced a desperation Pass Interference call, some 55 yards downfield. Flacco and Torry made a Super bowl based on those long PI calls. Have you all forgotten that?

That forced PI is the SAME as if he caught the pass.

It forced the Defense to be conscious and respect for the danger of the deep outside pass. The only difference is Aaron doesn't get any credit for it; and the yardage goes into the penalty column, instead.

Wake Up, People!

People say this, but I haven't seen him field a punt yet. I have seen him catch passes.

He failed to catch the pass, so he didn't accomplish anything. The ref threw a flag, which gave us the yards, we may not be so lucky in the future, just look at that "fumble" call.

His job is to catch passes, he didnt do that, he failed, which is becoming the norm for him.

Amendola?? Is that fair to use him as a benchmark?

You are wrong.

The objective is not to complete the pass. It is to get the yardage, and move the ball closer to the Goaline. Coach Harbaugh proved you can build an Offense based on PI calls. The Ratbirds even went to a Superbowl doing that.

The PI call came because of the ref.

Dobson dropped the ball, this is the norm for him.

Receivers who can't catch aren't much use. His time here will end unless he gets his act in order.

He wasn't doing that in 2013. He wasn't in sync with Brady early in the season, but he was catching on before his foot injury. He was catching the ball with his hands and not breaking stride. Check out his highlights.

I want that guy back. The talent is there, it is just a matter of confidence.

And that's the potential I and many others see! How do we get that guy back?!
