San Diego Tribune: Pats win because they are SMARTER than the rest of the NFL

I think you missed the point of that line. Read the line after it.
I did read the line after it. His overall point is that opponents would be better off not obsessing about the cheating that the Patriots do, rather, they should deal with the Pats superior intelligence and skills. He still accepts the notion that the Pats cheat.

Here's the full quote. "Are the Patriots cheaters? “Spygate” says yes. For their rivals’ sanity, perhaps it’s better to steer clear of the better explanation for the success. They really are smarter."

This writer deserves credit for stating what should be obvious to every NFL fan.

It's such a shame that Spygate was not properly explained as a minor rules violation and not cheating. Kraft tried to take the high road and move on when they really needed to defend themselves. They could have admitted fault while putting Spygate in its proper perspective. A lot of people would not have listened, but they needed to get the story out there. Most casual Pats fans, not those who read Patsfans, don't know the full story of Cameraplacementgate.

Along with "Do your job", Belichick and the team have been a little more open and talkative and have given some insight into what makes them so good. It's really very interesting. Just last week Brady was talking about how when he turns is back to the field, he knows where the defenders are going to be and is rarely surprised. He explained it's because he has studied opposing individual player's tendencies by watching many hours of game film. How many QBs in the league study film to such detail? Not many. Maybe only one.

This offseason should have been full of artlicles like this one. Unfortunately, Goodell robbed us of that with his ignorant, uneducated, fabricated, deceptive, completely stupid accusations of cheating and his illegal punishments.

The Pats are just going to have to outcoach, oustmart, outprepare, outgameplan everyone all over again and keep on winning. Some day, maybe not until Brady and Belichick are long retired, football fans will appreciate this dynasty.

pick your battles. we have a different view of it, but it's pretty unrealistic to expect everyone outside of boston to believe that the pats are 100% innocent. sure, we know more, but other people aren't going to read as much. this kind of article is clearly a good thing...

The line read pretty dismissive to me. He doesn't call them cheaters, puts quotes around Spygate, and doesn't bring up the recent nonsense. It's like he's saying if you call every team that breaks a rule cheaters, sure.

I took it to be a way of saying the the Pats rival need to think they are cheating, rather than just accepting that they are just better prepared and working harder.

He asks the simple question: Why are the Patriots winning? Answer: Because they are better than everyone else, in spite of a league that punishes success.

I think this message also came out in a completely separate instance in the first two weeks of the season. When posed questions during their respective post-game press conferences, Pittsburg's Mike Tomlin attributed the loss to the Patriots to cheating, while Buffalo's Rex Ryan attributed the loss to being outcoached. Rex Ryan, who is known to speak his mind and tell it like it is, carries the same message as this writer.

As an aside, say what you will about Rexy, but he's got some integrity.

That's true, but if it was his intention to equate the notion of "cheating" as a way for opponents to dismiss the success of the Patriots, he could have structured that sentence a lot better.

Putting a period after "spygate says yes" makes a world of difference. It makes that declaration a standalone.

The "Do Your Job" documentary is having a bigger impact than I had thought.

"He wisely held off on calling a timeout, while the discipline he established with assistants kept the airways clean."

Initially people said that BB lucked out or froze when he did not call the Timeout but after the documentary with recorded headset conversations included people now understand BB made that decision for a reason.

If you read any of the comments to the article most of the SD fans understood the "they are just better" gist the author intended to convey and they did not like it.

And they ARE just better. Good grief, watching some of these other football games, it becomes really obvious.
I said as much in a number of threads. I don't even care anymore what anyone else thinks, pro or con.

It seems that there is a wide gulf between NFL teams this season. There are few good teams(Patriots, Packers, etc) and many bad to very bad teams. Whenever I watch a non-Patriot game, I am amazed at how bad some of the teams truly are.

My 2c on the grammar interpretation.

Full sentence (also, the very last of an article summing up how pats are step ahead of everyone) reads:

Are the Patriots cheaters? “Spygate” says yes. For their rivals’ sanity, perhaps it’s better to steer clear of the better explanation for the success. They really are smarter.

Usually you don't see such quotes -ever- (or an article like this too I guess), so, taken with the following sentence leads me to think he's saying, Spygate too was a crock, it's just an easy crutch for those unable or unwilling to admit the truth.
