#3 CB - What should the Pats do

???

I'm a bit confused.

We have Butler and Brown as our outside corners, and Ryan as our nickel/slot corner.
==========
So when we talk about the #3/backup outside corner (the one to replace an outside corner when there is an injury), how can this be Ryan?

If Ryan were to be the backup outside corner (not a great idea), we need someone to be the slot corner.

If Ryan is good enough on the outside, the question is whether Fletcher or Coleman can thence the slot corner. Harmon is a possibility for nickel. For me, on passing downs, that would mean that Wilson would be our safety with McCourty.
======
I get that Belichick loves position flexibility. However, when a player is injured in a game, Belichick's preference is NOT to shift people around. Rather, it is much better to have crest body to come of the bench.
======
BOTTOM LINE

Our backup is Fletcher. It could be Coleman when he learns the system. We could trade for a backup corner who wouldn't see the field much, unless he is also a good slot corner. IMHO, the positions are really different positions.

Yeah, I agree with you that Ryan needs to stay as our slot corner. He seemed decent there and could potentially get better. I think he is maxed out as an outside man coverage corner. I am interested to see Coleman at some point or even Swanson. I'm looking forward to the versatility when Wilson comes back from injury

Your point?

Should we fire Brady because Dilfer won a Super Bowl?

Sure, we've won with poorer players at every single position on the field except quarterback.
========
I guess we can stop EVER questioning the quality of any player, since, after all, we've won with less.

Hold on to Fletcher and just scheme him to the WR we play. I don't think he's worse than Arrington and we used him for years. We'll be ok as long as the front gets pressure.

I just like throwing his name out there you over read this. ;)

I honestly thought from the beginning Fletcher would get more safety help with those deep passes. If he is not getting that...then don't put him at CB2. Instead put in...oh wait.

Ya just try to scheme him away from the other team's best WR. While his PI was costly he basically stride for stride and was just dumb for putting his hand on him because the ball was probably gonna be incomplete.

LOL, I don't think 5-6 for 70 yards is "holding" anybody.

If you were to get away from that game with 5 catches for 70 yards from Antonio Brown, you'd take that every single time.

This is partly why I really didn't get why they cut Arrington.

That is what happens when a #2 CB gets matched up with a #1 WR.

Most interesting thing that I heard on this type of dilemma that I hadn't thought of myself:

In SEA he was a pure RCB, in Philly he is playing LCB as their top guy, you're now spying the field with the opposite eye, back pedalling on the opposite leg, etc. The entire field is flipped and that means everything you do is basically backwards, it could be almost like learning to walk again from a pure technical standpoint, smart teams will take advantage of a guy playing where he isn't comfortable, even if he's a gifted athlete.

I never saw Maxwell as a great CB, certainly not at his contract level, infact, Browners attempted "praise" of him was perhaps the most damning thing he could say, he said "you keep throwing at him eventually he'll take one", well guess why people keep throwing at him, because he's not the best cover corner, or close. Combine that with the fact that not only was he not great, he's now playing "backwards" in a sense.

I actually agree with Mike Loyko on why we ditched him:

In 'Do Your Job' BB called Arrington "streaky". That is not a compliment from BB.

I haven't seen do your job yet , but if Arrington was too streaky then what is Fletcher?

Yep, and his play thus far with BAL has continued the streakiness.

Yep. Plus over the top help from Earl Thomas helps too.

Maxwell is a good player but paid waaaay to much.

Go get Dax Swanson back and give Bradley Fletcher a bus ticket.

That kid can't be any worse than what we have now. What's he gonna do, suck?

Julian Edelman channels his inner Troy Brown

Whatever happened to Alfonzo Dennard? I thought he was a solid #2 CB in 2013. His role disappeared last year with
Browner and Revis, not playing special teams, and being passed by Butler. He's a free agent right now and has to be better than Fletcher.

Anyone have any thoughts on him?
