Aaron Dobson

This is gonna be a good thread to follow during the season to watch all the people who hated on Dobson stick to their positions as long as possible despite games like today.
I'm not a hater I really want to see the kid do well and while today was an improvement it was still a mixed bag. Tough to be impressed by final stats when you're a starting wr on a team that throws like 55 times for 466 yards. You'll get stats by default.

The best sign imo is that Brady is starting to trust him. The pieces are in place but I still don't think this is the Getting Over the Hump game we need from him. It could be coming though. Arrow is pointing more up than down.

What's more important than anything is the fact that the kid now has a game on which he can build. He's got some more catches in meaningful minutes under his belt now. He's beat some coverages. He's taken some hits. He even made a great decision (though I wrongfully criticized him at the time) to go down late in the game instead of trying to get more yards on a short pass, good situational awareness. Eight catches is a great game for him against a secondary that, at least on paper, isn't half bad. We'll see what he can do with it.

Yes, he did really well yesterday, I was happy with him getting mixed into the game slowly, caught everything thrown at him except for that pass that I thought it was more on Brady than him, but I didn't see a replay, some people said the location was OK so be it. Just stay healthy, get 50 yards here and there and by the end of the season there will be a solid contribution from him.

I hope the coaching staff pick some "easy" games and gameplan for him and Amendola to pad some stats, get them contributing more and also sit Edelman a bit, I'm feeling he is a little lessened even though on pace for 1000+ yards again.

If Dobson can use this game to build on, he certainly could develop into that #3 for now and #4 after Lafell returns.

That would be a huge plus for a team that is dangerously thin at the position.

The ability to be able to use 3 WR sets going into a game is needed.

I'd really like to see Brady go deep to Dobson instead of Edelman or Amendola. He's got all the physical attributes to track deep balls better than any receiver we have. I truly believe he would have caught up to that Edelman overthrow late in the game.

I don't mean to nitpick, but there were a couple of times where he went to the ground making the catch when there was no need for it. If he doesn't break his stride, he could have gotten a lot of yards after the catch especially with his speed. It reminds me of Brandon Lloyd.

No yac Brandon Lloyd I use to hate him when he was here...but If Dropson;) puts up the numbers like Lloyd did here we have a winner. As a Offensive aterthought all Dobson has to do is catch the ball when they throw to him.

I don't think people truly hated him to the point where they would be surprised if he had a decent season. We all know he has the potential. Most of us are just fed up with him not living up to it so far.

And this is why I criticized him late in the game when he went down and it turned out to be the smart thing to do based on the situation. It was a cumulative effect of watching him do what he did on that play the whole game. I have been saying since preseason that he seems afraid of contact, and I don't even think it's something that I can see and nobody else. It's glaring to me. I think that's also the reason he juggles catches, though I did not see much of that yesterday (thankfully). I hope yesterday will prove a momentum builder for the kid. He can be decent in this offense if he can get beyond a few of his issues.

He had a good game, but it still doesn't make me forget the fact that we could've had Eddie Lacy who went 2 picks later, Travis Kelce (imagine that TE combo) Tyrann Mathieu, Keenan Allen, or even Knile Davis. However you could look at other draft failures like Montee Ball who went one pick earlier and feel a little better.

Still thinking about having Keenan Allen makes me mad a Dobson again. He would've been a much better fit on this team.
Should've. Could've .Would've.

I agree. I suspect he's thinking too much and trying not to screw up rather than just playing. With a little confidence, he can get past that and become much more of a weapon.

Dobson took what was available to him in terms of YAC.. Dobson isn't Gronk in terms of build so he's not going to run over people. Dobson doesn't have the shiftiness of Edelman so he's not going to make a lot of people miss.

I think that the only "issue" the kid has is staying healthy.

Don't forget he also went deep to Dion Lewis yesterday. Would be nice if he tried it with a non-dwarf other than Gronk someday.

If Dobson keeps playing how he did yesterday, Scott Chandler would be my choice to lose playing time when LaFell comes back.

3 wide with LaFell & Dobson outside and Edelman inside + Gronk would offer more between the 20s than having Chandler in who's pretty slow & lumbering.

When Dobson was drafted, the Pats still had the Hernandez on the roster, so they didn't have a need for Kelce. It wasn't until nearly 2 months later that Hernandez was arrested for Murder.
When Dobson was drafted, the Pats had Vereen and Ridley on the team already.

Whenever I hear people lament like this I always have to ask:
How do you know that Allen or Davis could have performed in this offense?
How do you know that Allen or Davis could have handled the coaching style?
How do you know that Mathieu would have done well on this defense?
How do you know that Mathieu could have handled the Pats coaching style?

He needs to knock it the hell off with the double clutching.

I agree but that will come with confidence, IMHO. Another problem is his going to ground on the reception. I'd love to see him catch one in mid-stride and go all the way... But the longball is not a Brady strength and if the way to get deep completions, is such awkward catches, then so be it.

I am not disagreeing with you, but I really like 2TE more than 3WR, personally. We'll see. Chandler is still getting familiar and I think will be a force down the stretch, especially when the weather changes and they'll have a reason to use bigger sets more (though we know they do what they want no matter what weather).
