rex ryan knows us. we know rex ryan. it's gonna be a battle of field position and whoever executes in the 4th qtr.

i was impressed with TT in his preseason games and yesterday. and IMO, bills have the best defense in the nfl. i see 17-21 type of game. they won't set the world on fire on offense against us. we will settle down and create some turnovers.

Pats will emphasize run D and do a better job containing the edge forcing the neophyte QB to have to win the game with his arm. I expect mistakes.
As one poster already pointed out, Wrecks will force NE to dink and dunk. Belichick will be moving both Gronk and Lewis all over the formations to reposition Buffalo's LBs. Chandler could be a feature target next Sunday. I also expect Brady to be swinging out passes to releasing RBs. When Buffalo's D begins to tire, then a more traditional offense.
Great chess match ahead.....the team that can mentally stay tough for 60 minutes will prevail. The crowd will be a problem and NE needs a lightning fast start to quell the chunkies in the upperdecks. By half time, the booze will have pickled them to the point of comatose and the stadium should be asleep :)

All-in-all, we held a team that averages 27 points to 14 meaningful points. I guess everyone needs to be reminded it's about points not yards.

.....and their historically bad and crappy defense held our team to under it's scoring average also.

The Pats have some work to do. Thank goodness, BB will not be sitting back so self satisfied.

No doubt. It needs to be seen both ways. I don't wear a pink hat or own any chickens.

Here's to an injury free game Sunday. I've seen quite a bit of chatter about the Bills, some good some bad, some respectful, some disrespectful, some quality talent assessment, and some misinformed fans, and all I'm going to say is you find the aforementioned on every message board. One things for certain, as a Bills fan, seeing all this chatter means one thing: The Bills are once again relevant, and as a Bills fan that's great.

I'd like to give my thoughts about the Bills, I'm not going to act like I know a whole lot about the Pats, outside of a few general observations (Pressure Brady up the middle, so he can't step up, stop Gronk, etc.).

Anyways on to the Bills:

Offense:

I'll start with the good from Sunday's game vs. Indy: Bills weapons played well for the most part and their game plan succeeded even though the Colts did everything in their power to take away Sammy. I think this is attributed to Greg Roman. I remember in camp Rex made a comment about not forcing the ball to one player, if you take one weapon away, the offense will look to beat you another way. One thing I love about Rex, very little coach speak, he held true to his word, and this player Sunday was Percy Harvin. This upcoming game it could be Clay, Harvin again, Robert Wood over the middle, Sammy, or the running game.

On to TT, his game is very efficient, he's going to throw a lot of high percentage balls, and beat you with his legs at least 2-3 times a game. If I remember correctly, he wasn't sacked, in lieu of crappy oline play (I'll get to that). His pros: Good velocity on this throws/live arm, throws well on the run, cerebral in the sense that he really seems to know his role: high percentage throws, efficiency, and don't turn the ball over. If you're expecting a riverboat gambler, and turnovers you're going to be disappointed. The wild card, he certainly seems to have that wow play in him, but is extremely disciplined. Cons: Doesn't throw a very tight spiral (It gets there with velocity, but it's not pretty), seems to have limited vision (Missed a few open WR's), and at times it's one read and take off.

McCoy missed much of the preseason and it seemed to show on Sunday. A few times he appeared visibly upset Sunday, and didn't seem to be on the same page with the oline. I think for 25, more than most backs continuity with the oline is important, because of his running style. Karlos Williams, Fjax's replacement and a 5th rd pick, is a big bodied north south runner that compliments McCoy well. He had a nice 20 something yard TD run.

The online really struggled yesterday, I was very high on 3rd pick John Miller, but he struggled in the run game. I think Eric Wood is very overrated, Cordy Glenn took too many penalties, and Henderson struggled. Hope to see some improvement out of this unit.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Bills talent is well documented on the D line, but two players the avg fan doesn't hear a whole lot about are 3rd round pick Preston Brown and 4th round pick Nigel Bradham. Both played incredibly well and are extremely athletic. Bradham is one of the faster linebackers in the league, and hits with authority. I think he finished the game with 8 tackles, 2 for loss and one sack. Getting Marcel Dareus back will be a nice boost for an already dominant unit, imo, he's the best player on the defensive side of the ball, an absolutely dominant force, that doesn't get much attention. I think the key to beating Brady and the Pats is to generate interior pressure, to limit his ability to step up in the pocket.

The secondary is incredibly deep, and I think had something crazy like 11PD yesterday. The Bills should be without starting S Corey Graham who looked like he was on the wrong side of a Buster Douglas Mike Tyson fight, and is concussed. His replacement Bacarri Rambo, had a mental lapse inside the 5 yesterday and allowed Luck and the Colts to get on the board in the second half. Aaron Williams is very gifted, instinctive and has really settled in as one of the young budding safety's in the league. Darby, will start opposite Gilmore, and from what I've seen early on, is prone to give up the big play, is good in coverage but lacks ball skills (although he did have his first INT on a pass from Luck to TY). Gilmore is a very, very good cover corner, but has hands of stone.

Anyhow, that's all I have for now. Oh and Carp kicked well, which is good because Rex was calling him out all preseason.

Thank you for your thoughtful post. It's good to have visitors like you stop in. There's a guy from the Saints who is also a great visiting poster.

Don't let any trash talkers that might reply to your post bother you. We're ornery around here, with good reason. This whole DeflateGate thing has turned from a sideshow into a grinding persecution that the NFL continues to use to distract the Patriots and tear down the team's accomplishments. In short, we're pissed.

That said, we appreciate the way Rex Ryan has toned down his rhetoric this summer regarding the Patriots and the way he stepped up and blew off the Steelers' whining about the headsets. He realizes that this is not the time to pile on, and it is appreciated.

I watched the entire Buffalo-Indy game and agree with most of your assessments. The Bills have a good team capable of beating the Patriots at home, but will have to step up their game defensively. The Colts looked slow to me on offense. Frank Gore and Andre Johnson were ineffective in keeping the Bills defensive pressure honest.

Maybe it was the Buffalo defense that made the Colts look so bad. We'll know more against the Patriots who have more and better weapons, especially with LeGarrette Blount coming back to pair with Dion Lewis in the backfield. Lewis was the surprise of the evening against the Steelers, along with the young offensive line that handled the pressure of opening night just fine. The Bills will be a better test along the line, but these kids are tough, very fast maulers who looked ready on Thursday.

The Bills will have their hands full with the three Patriot tight ends. They are big, they can block and all three can catch the ball with Chandler and Gronk being elite. The Bills linebackers will have to stay in their assignments or Brady will pick apart the Bills underneath with all the guys he has to choose from including Edelman, Amendola, and Lewis.

On offense, I was impressed, as were you, with Tyrod Taylor at QB. He's got the goods. It will be interesting to see how he fares against the quick, mobile Patriots front seven. The Pats don't have the big pass rusher like the Bills or Dolphins, but they have a group that is as mobile as any front seven I can remember. I expect Taylor to be pushed off his spot a lot, and to find that the contain man is where he's supposed to be forcing some quick decisions and tough throws. The Pats DBs do not include a shutdown guy like Revis, but they cover well enough. Big Ben had it rough until garbage time.

The thing that bugged me about the Bills was how undisciplined they looked - 11 penalties that bailed out the Colts and handed them 113 yards. They looked like a Rex Ryan team. Belichick knows how to exploit that on both sides of the ball, and Brady is a master of the hard count.

Good luck on Sunday, man. I don't know about others, but outside the Pats games, I'm rooting for the Bills to kick some ass and grab a wild card this year.

Antonio Brown > Sammy Watkins
Heath Miller > Charles Clay

BB won't treat McCoy like he is a the oldest RB in the league like DeAngelo Williams was.

Chicken little mentality on here in full force today. Bills have the great defense and now potent offense and the Pats have absolutely no defense and the offense that has Tom Brady, Rob Gronksowki and Julian Edleman is just meh.

Take it easy big guy, we aren't panicking. We are just being realistic and taking are cues from BB. The strengths of the Bills are real. This isn't BB puffing up a bad team. The facts are they have one of the 3 best DL's in league, they have one of the top 3 RB's in league (and their rookie looked good as well), one of top 3 explosive big play threats in the league in Harvin, a very good TE, and the top rated WR from the 2013 draft.

They have a QB who has been in the league for 5 season and played a mistake free, very productive game in his first start. Taylor should be the poster child for why young QB's should sit for a few years before starting. They have a HC who has shown he can, on occasion, stifle the Pats offense. He has INFINITELY more talent now than he did with that Jets team we beat twice by by a combined 3 points last season
Finally there is that matter of having to play the Bills on the road. Buffalo has ALWAYS been a tough place for the Pats to play, even when they truly sucked.

Face it, J, this could be one of the more difficult challenges the Pats will have overcome this entire year. I believe there are a lot more concerns going into this game that the one we will play in Indy down the road. That's just the way it is.

But it doesn't mean we "can't" win this game, or we are being disloyal if we question whether we will. Over the years we've seen dozens of wins that seemed to go against the odds. The fact is that "on paper", and given where Bill is in the team building process (very early), more of the pluses seem to be on the Bills side unless you are being blind or stubborn.

For me if this game was at home, I'd expect to win. But it isn't, so my expectations will be to see continued improvement in a lot of areas we've discussed and hope for the best. If we win, then fine. If we lose, and show improvement, I won't be shocked. In my mind, we aren't going to have our best lineup on the field for most of the first half of the season, so a 5-3 record would be fine with me. Anything better would be gravy. But that's just me.

I think this is a game where we run run run we need to punch that defense in the mouth i dont care if we are averaging 2 yds a run if we go one dimensional they will tee off on Brady .
Hope Blount shook whatever crap he had in the preseason we need him and Bolden to come thru with some big time runs.
We need to set up screens to Lewis and White and keep their defense on the field long clock milking drives.
We need to wear the d line down then run hurry up on them and 8 to 12 yd routes thats where we will be most effective we cant test their corners deep.
Dobson might be the one they have a shot thrown to once or twice to take advantage of his height hopefully we can get a mathup with their 5ft 9 rookie and Dobson does what hes suppose to do.
On defense I say you play alot of zone we dont want to go one on one against their receivers we know their QB can make a handful of deep throws but can he pick apart a zone play after play or will he make a mistake we can capitalize on?
I wouldnt bring too many blitzes he practices against that style of defense all the time.
I think we should run alot of dime defenses where Mccourty and A defensive back exchange positions so it confuses him and gives Dmac a shot at a ball.
This game plan would see Mccoy and co rush for about 150 yards but the idea is to sacrifice field goals for Tds.
Tighten up at the goal line but play off man all the rest of the game.
Chip and hit Harvin every play
Marshall Faulk treatment.
Have Collins spy Clay.
If we play this style of defense and stay disciplined I beleive we will see Taylors statline look like 2 tds to 2 ints.
With us winning the game despite a 4th quater surge ending with a Int.
To squeak by 2 and 0
Predicted score 27 to 23

Dissagree quick short passes against Great D think Seattle Game. Blount is totally ineffecticve against Defenses who can stop the run.

Agreed on all points. Let me try to make it even simpler: The Bills have plenty of talent, particularly on defense, but most analysts discounted them because they supposedly had nothing at QB (I remember the media making jokes about them starting Tyrod-who-in-heck-is-that-Taylor). And in his first start, the QB played really well. The Pats are the defending Superbowl champs for good reason, but I don't expect this to be a walk in the park next week.

Great post, Evan555. You and other knowledgeable and level-headed Bills fans are always welcome.

I like Rex Ryan. Personally I don't think hes the defensive mastermind everyone thinks he is but he certainly brings a ton of energy with him. The Buffalo fan base needs that.

You d-line scares the crap out of me. It was news to me that you have good reviews of the Bills secondary. I don't view them as highly as you but I certainly don't watch as many games as you do. From my view, Brady shreds everyone :p

Hope your team stays healthy and good luck.

You think priority in the game plan against Steelers was to limit D'Angelo Williams? BB welcomed the run because it meant Roethlisburger wasn't passing. Similair what they did to Manning 2 years ago and why Moreno had 40 carries and 200 yards rushing.

The only flaw in this argument is that BB welcomed the run AND roethlisberger ended up passing the ball all over the place anyway. At least against denver we limited peyton to like 180 yards passing or whatever it was that night.

The steelers just did whatever they wanted against us run or pass. we were lucky that they kept making stupid mistakes such as heyward-bey stepping out of the end zone before catching a lay up TD to keep themselves out of the game.

Thanks for the informative post. I'll take anything from an opposing fan base that isn't "cheater, cheater pumpkin eater" right now. You are correct: the Buffalo Bills are relevant again. This is the type of game that makes football such a great sport, with a frenzied fan base looking to see just how far they've come.

Great in depth breakdown evans, really appreciated. I think the whole game comes down to our O-line against Buffalo's D line. IF our line gives Brady time, even if our so-so defense gives up 35, our offense can score enough to win (most likely). I think it will be a very physical game. Our 2014 Pats were the first Pat's team in a long time that could actually beat physical teams (Ravens, Seahawks). From 2007-2013, our team was too finesse and soft and most of the time lost to physical teams.

Ya because Tyrod Taylor is definitely Ben Roethlisburger and the Bills have Antonio Brown.
I take your point...but another way of looking at it is that the Pats were two missed FG's and a Steelers' Offsides away from losing that game...

Much better thread than the other one. I can add something from a different perspective...

If the Pats get up early, that could get into the Bills heads. There is no doubt that the Bills have a Patriots complex... shoot, we are not the only ones, but we gotta play and almost always lose to them twice a year. Controlling the game early, will be so important to the Bills.

My hope... Rex's bravado will make them believe that can beat the Pats. If you lose the mental game early against Brady and Belichik, you are in trouble. One thing I think the Bills have not had for the 15 years of horribleness is real coaching. Ralph was cheap, Terry Pegula is Robert Kraft rich. As a result, we now have one the larger staffs in the league and some real good assistants who are getting paid well to be here. Roman is in a whole different as on OC than our last several hacks. That alone is helping already. Knowing how to put your best players in a position to make a few plays. No one disputes Rex's capability as a DC.

What I am worried about is that BB will spread us out, and dictate the tempo. WIth Brady under center, that is an effective strategy against an attacking defense. Run out of the spread or pass to one of the many options Brady has at his disposal.

It should (I hope) be a great game in a charged up Bills stadium.

I take your point...but another way of looking at it is that the Pats were two missed FG's and a Steelers' Offsides away from losing that game...

You think they would have handed the Steelers a TD at the end of the game had the scoreboard been that close? The Pats took their foot off the gas in the 4th quarter due to a big lead. Now way the Steelers win that game when they were unable to make a big play in the red zone when it mattered and could not stop Brady.
