If this was changed to 18 games, people would complain for a while but still watch it, and then in 5 years we would all say, boy remember back when, there used to be 4 preseason games and only 16 games, then everyone had to get up all hungover on the Monday after the Superbowl.

I'm pretty sure more general national polls have shown that people don't want the longer season. Not sure though. Yes, we would definitely watch the games, and I'm sure you're right everyone would get used to it. Still wrong though.

F 18 games I want 20 games that count, no preseason for unknowns to make a name for themselves, rosters to be 75 players, 24 team playoffs only the last team in each division missing out, salary cap doubled, the following Super Bowl to be played on the moon in a arena with artificial gravity and each team to have 3 downs a game they can turn off gravity on the field.
