Bill Walsh messed with Bill Parcells Headsets

Apologies if this is a repost.

Walsh liked to script plays at the beginning of the game. Against the Giants one year, the headsets on his sideline happened to go out. Not as big of a deal since he knew what the 49ers were going to do at the start of the game anyway. But that meant the Giants and Bill Parcells had to put their headsets down too.

"Getting ready to play them again next year in the playoffs, and I said to Bill, ‘These phones go out again to start the game, I'm gonna expose you,'" Parcells recalled. "He looked at me with a little wink and says, ‘Just a little gamesmanship.' And I said, ‘I understand.'"

Why has this not been discussed on ESPN Sportscentre? First take? ......... F***ing mediots, i hope they get multiple STDs and have to suffer their entire life .

You know the answer to that question just as well as I do. It's only cheating when a certain team is accused of it. For everyone else, it's cute gamesmanship.

It's well known, it just happened before most fans were out of diapers. You can't blame the media for not knowing that they would stay in them for life.

2 things, that reads Parcells messed with Walsh's headsets, which would mean it was a NY team that did the cheating so that would never, ever be considered wrong. Second, if they did bring it up they would use it as proof that BB does it because he was under Parcells.

There is no doubt the 49ers messed with the Giants headsets. It happened a ton back then. Good ole Don Shula did it a ton in the Orange Bowl.

When Tuna approached Walsh and asked him to knock off the funny business or he would do it to him, he complied.

What gets me is that this anecdote was relayed in the documentary a football life , So presumably will get a wide audience. (it has already been picked up by someone in the Philadelphia media, if you follow the links)

ESPN's Chris Mortenson is reporting that during a seance, dead NFL owners Al Davis and Art Modell insisted that Roger Goodell suspend Joe Montana for four games and fine Bill Walsh $500,000 and the draft choices Walsh used in 1990 to acquire QB Steve Young. Goodell assigned ambulance chaser Jeffrey Pash to collect the fine from beyond the grave.

This shows again that this type of gamesmanship/trickery/funny business is actually nothing new. If one person recollects it, others have done it as well, to varying degrees. But these things are also easily 'forgotten' or some people don't know anymore how things happened: "I can't recall the details"/"I don't know what exactly happened"/"Someone else took care of that". "If you're not trying to push the envelope, you keep your mouth shut."
