Tomlin is a bad coach

I say the following with great respect: your fan base has been spoiled with BB as the head coach, Brady as the QB, and your front office. But coaches like BB and QBs like Tom Brady don't grow on trees, and most fanbases necessarily accept some imperfections with their coach/QB combo. It won't be long unfortunately until NE has to adjust to a post-BB, post-TB era, at which point your fanbase may also have to accept some similar imperfections, as GOAT-level coaches and quarterbacks are once-in-a-generation talents that are extremely rare and hard to find. I'm sure the older fans on this board (like myself) will understand when I say: enjoy these moments, and be grateful...this amazing run won't go on forever, and there are no guarantees regarding when this sort of thing will happen again.
Perhaps true but Parcells/Bledsoe and Carroll/Bledsoe weren't necessarily chopped liver, and combined with BB/Brady that takes this franchise back 23 years. I think the Krafts will come up with another winning combo and we arguably have part of it in process with Garoppolo.

Defensively the 08 team was below average. They would have had a hard time beating Pitt with Brady.

The 2008 team was 8th in points scored (25.6/g) and 8th in points allowed (19.3/g).

I'm not sure why people would think Tomlin's on the hot seat.. Pittsburgh went 11-5 last year, and they won the AFCN.

You sir, must be reading my mind.

Mike Tomlin as about as far away from the hot seat as most coaches can get. No one ever seems to have the answer to the million dollar question of: "who replaces him in a more effective manner?"

Tomlin could probably go 6-10 and not be on the hot seat unless it happened in back to back years.

Secondary was awful.

CBs were Hobbs and Delta ONeil as starters and Wheatley and Willhite as the backups. Awful.

The Rooney family does not demand attention to detail from their coaches.

The Pats would never have beaten the Steelers in that AFCC if they hadn't undressed them on STs, which were basically a 17-point swing in a 7-point game. But outside of his inattention to STs, I imagine Cowher was a pretty good coach.

The comment I responded to was that the defense was terrible, not just the DBs. No matter who the DBs were though, they still ended up 8th in scoring defense and would have been in the playoffs if not for the idiotic 4 team division setup.

I said that they were below average. The line was ok but lacked a pass rush. The LBs were decent and the secondary was below average.

Ppg is important but does not the the whole story. 2010 D was top 10 in points and they weren't stout at all. If the offense didn't score 30 or they didn't force turnovers they were bad.

We lose again

Tomlin said the Steelers “eventually” got satisfaction with the situation, but the stone-faced coach left little room for interpretation: Tomlin indicated that he thought the Patriots were trying to gain an advantage, and it wasn’t the first time. Tomlin had an animated discussion about the topic with owners Dan and Art Rooney, and general manager Kevin Colbert, outside the team’s locker room.

what a joke

Were those the years that the Pats defense led the NFL in 3rd and long deficiency? Those repeated completions on 3rd and very long were as frustrating as it gets.

True, especially since the Steelers don't change coaches after a moderately bad season the way that some franchises do, they believe in stability. And, that philosophy has worked for them.

That said, I think it was obvious that Tomlin was embarrassed last night, both by clock management and by the numerous mental errors of his players, particularly the defensive secondary (e.g., leaving Gronk wide open).

You won't get any argument from Steeler's fans. They want him gone but Rooney will never do it unless there is a full scale fan revolt. It was the same issue in NYJ land with Herm. It's a different level of tolerance for a minority coach.

Art Shell, Romeo Crennel, Mike Singletary, Rahim Morris and Leslie Frazier all disagree.

Remember that Pittsburgh sticks with its coaches and is patient through down periods. Remember too that Herm only coached the Jets for 5 years, that he made the playoffs in 3 of those 5 years, won two playoff games, and only got fired after Pennington got hurt and Curtis Martin's wheels fell off.

Tomlin has appeared in two Super Bowls, won one, 5 playoff appearances, no losing seasons, all while rebuilding every part of his roster except for QB. He's earned his keep, at least for another year or two. He is a mediocre tactician, but not a bad coach.

To suggest this is a race issue is ignorant both socially and from a football perspective. It only serves to divide.

Just checked some numbers to try and introduce some meaningful data into our discussion.

2008 Pats D

26th in 3rd down defense
28th in receptions for 1st downs
31st in # of completions for 40+ yards
23rd in opposing Qb rating.
31st in red zone defense.

Pats offense was #3 in offensive time of possession so that helped.

Tomlin had quite the intense post-game press conference. It reminded me of John Harbaugh's post game presser after the divisional playoff game last year. Think Deception-gate.

I understand that there are a lot of emotions after losing a game. There aren't many games in a season and the playoffs is sudden death, but at the same time, I lose some respect for these coaches. They should keep their gripes to themselves, otherwise they appear as sore losers.

In both cases, Harbaugh and Tomlin insinuated that the NEP cheated. "Deception" was a euphemism for "cheating" and so was Tomlin's "it always happens here." It's revealing of an attitude out there (maybe not everywhere) that the NEP are cheaters--but is ultimately unfounded, which is clear-cut the case in both Tomlin's and Harbaugh's implicit accusations. The final revelations were that the "deception" was legal and that the headsets are out of the NEP's control.

I tried to find you last night ,Deb. We were there. WTF was this idiot talking about?? We were right there behind HIS bench all game. I didn't see any histrionics or complaining. I hate this goddamned guy now. Just a punk move to do what he did post game. PUNK.
Sorry I missed you Joker! Let's make an actual meet-up plan next time! I don't normally leave my seat at all during the game, but I was with my daughter and she wanted to get a snack, so I was gone for about 15 minutes in the 3rd quarter. Is that when you came by? Not to mention that I had to wear a hood for most of the game and my old lady hearing isn't what it used to be!
IMO Tomlin looks like a complete fool and a whiny punk. A guy who actually tripped an opposing team's player, and knows that the NFL is in charge of the headsets, should probably not be complaining about a technical glitch during the first game of the season in a rain storm. Did the headsets cause him or his assistant to call that wide receiver pass? WTF was that? Until that happened I was worried that the Steelers were going to go up & down the field on our D. That play allowed them to get their feet under them somewhat. I didn't see anything happening on the Steelers bench either. I did see Big Bozo complaining vociferously about the false start penalty late in the game as that was right in front of me. At the time I thought, "he must be complaining that the Pats are simulating the snap count," which of course IS illegal. When I heard after the game that he was complaining that they were shifting during his cadence? Another WTF moment for me...
How were your seats with Tune?!

I think he was coaching to avoid giving the ball back to Brady with any significant time left at the end of the half. Instead he ended up mangling the clock worse than Salvador Dali and cost himself a chance at 7 versus 3 points.
How about at the end of the game? They needed 2 TDs to tie. They got the ball back with over 2 minutes left and (I think) all 3 time outs, and did not score until there were 2 seconds left on the clock and no TOs. I believe the clock started running at 2:18 and they did not get a play off before the 2 minute warning. Terrible clock management at the end of both halves.

Tomlin is the living example of the Rooney Rule. Rooney is one of the real powers in the league and it would look bad if he violated his own rule.

Don't be too sure. The person who shops for the groceries is just as important because he can get the coach fired regardless of the QB. Exhibit A is Kraft's pick for GM Booby Grier.
