For this edition I'm going to start with only football related discussion. If I feel like it at the end I might say something about the usual nonsense that is exploding around us as I speak.
1. Without getting into specifics, my overall feeling for this game was that the offense was much further advanced than I had a right to expect and the defense left something to be desired so lets break it down.
2. The OL - When you come into a game against a team that has a good defensive front, and you are starting your 3rd string C who happens to be an UDFA rookie, plus another rookie who wasn't a high pick, and a supposed journeyman young G without a lot of experience, you have every reason to be concerned....very concerned. Yet in the end the OL operated well within our highest expectations. Room for improvement? Undoubtedly. But for the exception of one very well design blitz Brady remained relatively untouched and unhurried for the great majority of this game
They didn't open any gaping holes in the run game, but when we did run it wasn't horrible, as Lewis averaged 4.6 ypc, and it got better as the game went along. When it did fail it failed due to penetration into the backfield off the edge. I don't know whether the cause was do to a blocking failure from the T's or TE's or was it missed assignments, or simply just good defensive design (they pay the other guys too.) But in the end, Bill will know and I have every reason to expect it to continually improve as the season goes on. a
The biggest surprises on the plus were from Andrews, Kline and Jackson. Both held up remarkably well on pass protection, and seemed OK when we ran. The negative in this game was with Nate Solder (disclaimer: who is a favorite of mine) The penalty was provoked, but totally uncalled for. He has to know better. It was the key element in a scoreless drive. He also was replaced by Cannon at one point. I don't know why or for how long, but I will be interested to find out more about the "Solder situation", and I hope our intrepid media will take time out from their rumor mongering to find out.
Finally, I was surprised when I read that BB had opined in public that the OL talent was better this year than last. Tonight's results proved once again that BB knows what he's talking about. I only expect this OL to keep getting better as the season goes on, regardless of who lines up there.
3. Receivers - On a semantic issue, I think we really need to abandon the concept that makes a distinction between TE's and WR in THIS offense. Both Chandler and Gronk get split wide enough time to blur the definition. They are ALL receivers, who are lined up all across the field. So let's move on.
You would have thought that the Brady/Edelman connection would have suffered some rust after not seeing much of each other this preseason, but the results showed that they have clearly been putting in the work behind the scenes. Edelman consistently got open and Brady consistently found him in the short game. So for the rest of the season it looks like we can expect to see more of the same. Clearly Pittsburgh had no clue how to stop him, so I guess it was the radio signal and not the coaching.
Amendola didn't get a lot of looks, but he too looked like he was getting separation, and provided a good counter point to Edelman's routes, as it seemed they were often working in tandem.
Dobson remains a mystery since he clearly wasn't part of the offensive game plan. One target, one catch is about all you can say except this. At least for now, regardless of who the #3 WR is, he is going to likely be the 5th target on most routes after Edelman, Amendola, Gronk, and Lewis. So lets remember that it isn't a "Dobson thing", its just how the offense is being set up.....at leas for this week
4. RB- I don't want to see Lewis be my main RB each week between the T's, but for this one game, I couldn't be more happy. He averaged 4.6 ypc and when he was stuffed it was never his fault. He rarely got knocked down by the first contact and on most runs made at least one person miss. He's a great find and I think he will make most people quickly forget how important Shane Vareen was to this offense as the 3rd down back. The fact he blocked well vs the blitz was a pleasant surprise. As of now I think the "3rd down RB question we had going into the season has been answered.
But the fact is we really need LGB back. Not having that thumper style RB last night was telling in SY/GL. In fact if I'd have been in charge of the roster, Jonas Gray, not White would still be with the team. I still hope he gets back here on the PS. If we get some injuries to Blount, I think we'd need him.
5 QB - Brady was Brady at his surgical best last night with a 77% completion rate and a great command of the offense as usual. However I would be remiss not to note the several times Rothlessburger threw lasers to his deep receivers perfectly on target, while Tom missed both Amendola and Edleman deep.
I know its hard to say about a 38 year old QB, but I sincerely hope Tom improves on this aspect of his game as the season goes on. Eventually teams will try to sqeeze the mid range zones with 5 under man/zone coverage. I believe we HAVE the receivers to break deep now we need Tom to hit them more consistently
