Tomlin is a bad coach

Mark Madden came on one of the local talk shows here a few years ago and implied that Tomlin makes coaching decisions based on race. I tried to find it but couldn't. That's much more believable than anything I've heard coming out of ESPN about the Pats.

This guy has been an NFL head coach since 2007. Hes been to two Super Bowls. He's won in his league. My perception of him going into this game was favorable.

The clock management around the 2 minute warning was inexcusable. He needs to lay off the NyQuil.

Two super bowl appearances is superb, but to me it felt like those were still Cower's team. (watching from afar)

In the last Batman movie that has the Steelers in it, the director had Cower as Coach despite him being retired for several years.

have you noticed that BB never says anything negative about another team and or coach, yet they all seem to pile on him.

Tomlin was exposed last night, and I think he was embarrassed how badly he got out coached, so the thing to do these days is claim that the Patriots cheated to cover up your own mistakes.

the league sets up the headsets and both sides had trouble, well because you are trying to use 23 different wireless electronic signals in a fishbowl, in a rain storm. nope, that's not it, the Patiots have figured a way to screw with the frequencies. I can only hope someone told the Pats radio guys that the Steeelers could hear their broadcast and they started ripping Tomlin for his epic bad coaching.

This whole thing is getting so ridiculous

I agree. LeBeau was DC and many of the player from Cower's time were still in critical roles. Hes been doing a decent job.

Yep. Just checked and Roethlisberger, Hines Ward, Willie Colon, Maurkice Pouncey, Mike Wallace, Heath Miller, Aaron Smith, Ryan Clark, Troy Polamalu, James Farrior, and Casey Hampton were also in it.

You won't get any argument from Steeler's fans. They want him gone but Rooney will never do it unless there is a full scale fan revolt. It was the same issue in NYJ land with Herm. It's a different level of tolerance for a minority coach.
Agree 100%, there is a different standard for Tomlin with a certain segment (a segment that is, sadly, shockingly broad) of the fan base. But for fans that wants the head coach's head to roll after a loss; my question is always, who exactly are you hiring to replace him?

Of course you'll get no arguments here that Tomlin has major issues with clock management. It's almost inconceivable that an NFL head coach could be consistently this poor in one aspect of the game.

That said:
  • 1) there are a ton of different aspects to coaching, and clock management is actually a very small part of that (even if it is one of the most visible to fans) and
  • 2) the people in Pittsburgh who want Tomlin gone are the same ones calling for OC's and DC's to be fired after every loss, think the backup at every position is vastly superior to the starter in front of him, think the athletically-challenged 3rd string fullback is somehow the linchpin to the team's success, and generally seem to think that they as fans are all NFL executives-of-the-year in waiting.
I say the following with great respect: your fan base has been spoiled with BB as the head coach, Brady as the QB, and your front office. But coaches like BB and QBs like Tom Brady don't grow on trees, and most fanbases necessarily accept some imperfections with their coach/QB combo. It won't be long unfortunately until NE has to adjust to a post-BB, post-TB era, at which point your fanbase may also have to accept some similar imperfections, as GOAT-level coaches and quarterbacks are once-in-a-generation talents that are extremely rare and hard to find. I'm sure the older fans on this board (like myself) will understand when I say: enjoy these moments, and be grateful...this amazing run won't go on forever, and there are no guarantees regarding when this sort of thing will happen again.

We are keenly aware of this. Prior to BB/Brady we went through a slew of coaches/QBs. Things started to change when Parcells/Bledsoe came in (which is why Pats fans still love Bledsoe, even though he was just a 'good' QB). We are just enjoying the ride and dominance.

Maybe he's changing things up. From today

Winnah!

I was just coming to post about the Steelers' coaching. I don't know how Tomlin is in terms of broad schemes and strategy, hiring decisions, player motivation, etc., but his real-time game management last night was shockingly bad. Consistently bungled clock management. Wrong numbers of players on the field. Players looking confused. You'd never guess that the HC was starting his 7th season with the team.
You know, I have often talked about liking Tomlin. But man, last night was bad. It's almost like he realized he was being outcoached and decided to make the whole thing about headsets to mask his ineptitude. Whatever.

Not to mention he just fired one of the all time great defensive coordinators and his defense was completely lost at times last night. How do you forget to cover Gronk? And 10 guys on the field? Oh, but the headsets... pathetic.

IDK, I know I can be easily distracted by Zolak's vast knowledge of unicorns and show ponies. I can see how hard it might be for Tomlin to concentrate while listening to the color commentator stylings of Zo.

In Tomlin's defense, Zo was yelling about how you should not cover Gronk.
(Where's the bricks emoticon when you need it?)

Tomlin, of course, isn't on BB's level, but he is probably one of the better coaches in the league, after all, he has won one Super Bowl and been to another. Plenty of coaches haven't been able to do that.

However, I'm not surprised he "lost it" a bit last night (blaming headset malfunctions, etc.), I'm sure he was extremely embarrassed. He had to know that his coaching looked terrible last night, and nobody likes to look bad on National TV.

The clock management was one thing, that was abysmal and all on him.

Plus, it seemed like his players (particularly his defensive players) were running around in a confused state last night, and that didn't make him look good either. However, part of that had to be the players, as lilloyd has pointed out in his excellent posts, this current batch of Steeler defensive players seems to get confused sometimes (at least at this stage in their careers, that can of course change with experience).

I'm sure that Tomlin looked like a better coach when he was winning a Super Bowl and had Polamalu in his prime directing traffic in the backfield.

I know that many on this Board feel that BB has grossly over rated (and over-drafted) smart "coach on the field" safeties in the last few years (Wilson, Harmon, Richards). The jury is still out on all three, but I can see why BB is focusing so much on having these "coach on the field", versatile safeties. Having really, really smart safeties available can really help a defense. There were times in past when the Patriots had some athletic safeties that may have been lacking a bit in the "mental swiftness department" (cough...Meriweather...cough), and it seems like BB is determined to not put up with that in the future.

Hes not as bad as he was last night imo, after all he did get to two super bowls and won one with the team cowher built. However barry switzer won a sb too with someone elses team, but i wouldnt rate tomlin that bad id say hes mediocre - you can do alot worse.

From what ive seen in pittsburgh its a talent issue mainly as they have lost the ability to draft concistently since cowher left other than at wr and bell. How much of that they attribute to the hc i dont know but they have been in a steady decline since tomlin took over. I believe theyve gone 4 seasons now without a playoff win, you probably have to go back to the end of chuck knoll's tenure to find that kind of mediocrity in pittsburh.

Speaking of all that i wonder why bill cowher has been out of football so long, he was an outstanding coach.

On one hand I want to write off Tomlin's SB win as riding Cowher's and Roethlisberger's coattails. OTOH, winning a SB is a hell of an accomplishment no matter how you qualify it. Plus they have an elite QB/WR/RB combo and it is only week 1. Lots of teams look miserable in week one.

But the one thing that's clear is the Steelers have become steadily worse since he took over. They're a sloppy, soft, undisciplined trainwreck so far.

Glad you started this thread. Was wondering about Tomlin last night. What is it that he actually does? Every time the camera showed him he was just standing there. Mouth closed. Does he participate during games?

Just heard Shannon Sharpe on Sirius call him his favorite coach. Haha. Sharpe is so dopey.
He has that deer in the headlights look which always makes you think he's in over his head, but they won an SB so I figured that was just the way he looked. But they were not prepared last night. I'm even willing to grant some leeway because it takes some time for the coaching staff to gel just as it takes the team but holy cow! And I'm just talking about coaching, don't get me started on the whining.

I suspect that Tomlin's job is in jeopardy this year and he knows it. If he can say it's not my fault, it's Patriots fault he can feel better on the unemployment line.
