On Mike & Mike right now, ESPN is previewing an Outside The Lines documentary on spygate. From what they have said so far, they are saying that owners felt Goodell went too easy on the Patriots back in 2007. The deflategate investigation was supposedly so big because others felt the league did not investigate the Pats thoroughly enough in '07. They are alleging that the Patriots were using information from previous videotaping during games, and that other owners privately were upset at Goodell. Also supposedly the other owners were upset that they were left out in the dark about what happened.

I'm listening the spin now. It's so obvious this is damage control encouraged by the NFL. F*cking sickening to listen to.

"Deflategate was a makeup call for Spygate". WTF???

ESPN smear 20 minutes before goodell goes on air ? smear released on the first day back from the long weekend after the ruling?

Smells like NFL propaganda to me!

Lmfao at thE NFL declined to comment, why comment when you ordered, wrote , and edited the story!

For those of us that can't watch, can anyone give us more on what's being said? I did hear from a friend that the Pats' taping was from 2000-2007. But wasn't it LEGAL for them to tape until 2006?

EDIT: I said this about Deflategate from the very beginning: That this isn't about deflated footballs. It's totally, 100% about Spygate.

unreal, espn has no ****ing shame.
brady should never speak to that network ever again. no more sitdown interviews tom...dont talk to those leeches.

" investigative reporting " hey assholes, why dont they use their time on more serious matters...so disgusting.

ESPN is declaring war on our franchise and pulling out every old tired allegation in the book, putting a bow on it, and claiming to reveal shocking new inside information.

They are the worst scum there is.

Yeah, watching this now. What a load of crap.

Claiming the Patriots used to steal the first 20 scripted plays from opponents locker rooms while the team was doing pre game warmups. Who the hell would leave that sheet laying around a locker room unguarded. It's all BS.

Their **** is so tiring. Goodell must be so livid, hes going off the rails and is using ESPN to throw anything and everything they have.

Patriots already released a statement.

They are alleging that the Patriots were using information from previous videotaping during games

Which is not at all, in any way, at any time, illegal. Which owners, coaches, the NFL and ESPN all know. The only thing that was and is illegal is 1. videotaping from non-approved locations, and 2. using videotape in-game. The Patriots were caught violating #1, there is zero evidence or even the slightest hint of them violating #2.

Kraft's biggest mistake was not fighting during cameraplacementgate. He never attempted to control the narrative, Belichick was guilty of taping from an illegal location, nothing more nothing less. This nonsense about 'spying' and in-game benefit from those tapes is ridiculous media and NFL spin, but it was never fought by the Pats and so that's what people believe they did. And it's why they're being treated so unfairly now, and will continue to be castigated until Belichick is gone (and probably far after that, too). What complete nonsense.

Supposedly Goodell feared Arlen Spector would spearhead a congressional investigation, and pressured others (Mike Martz is on the record of saying so) of publicly saying that the filming was no big deal.

Story is now on bspn.com, if anyone cares to to read it.

This is the retaliation we've been waiting for and it just so happens it's released on the morning Goodell is going to appear on Mike and Mike. I didn't think I could hate ESPN and the NFL more than I did.

I put this in the Goodell on mike & Mike thread:

Quick notes, may clean up

Calling it an investigative piece
Make-up call of CameraPlacementGateas they are saying that Goodell felt he went too light.

Goodell ordered tapes to be destroyed
Following of February saying it was a handful of games
BB saying they had been doing it for some time
All 3 SBs were under this timeframe

Goodell destroying tapes, made some owners up. Bringing up Alren Specter saying ti went all the way up to Washington and calling for a congressional investigation that never happened

Owners upset and Goodell made promise if they were caught again it would be dealt with more harshly (played some video of Jerry Jones)

Really seems liek a fluff piece that is squarely trying to get people all riles up and get them to chant the Patriots as cheater.

significant things the investigators found
  • Why is Brady being smeared because of a little air (interviewed 90 people) and it all goes back to CameraPlacementGateas and not saying how many games and the impact on games an the league not going deeper (investigation done in days)
  • punishment handed out too quickly
  • Public outrage made league go back after punishment
  • Physically stomped on tapes and Patriot lawyer left to pick up pieces
One owner felt it was a make-up call, but how many owners feel that way (response, it's alot).
  • League not being transparent (my words) offended lots of teams (I call BS on this as teams knew they were being taped).
  • Greeny tried to say if it was Kraft's friendly relationship with Goodell that caused it to go that way, but reporter basically said it was the speed with how it came out.
  • Goodell over eager with defamegate because of the repeat occurrence.
  • Lots of NFL people think Patriots are cheaters, but nothing substantial.
  • CC shocked that they didn't go after BB. Response about Wells saying BB wasn't a part of it
