And the fact that his supposed replacement is already gone doesn't bode well. McClain was 10x worse than Arrington.
No. What is embarrassing is people who had McClain pencilled in to replace Arrington when it wasn't a given by any stretch of the imagination.. What's worse is the people lamenting the failure of a 50/50 proposition as if it's some foretelling of doom.

That Arrington contract is embarrassing. 3 mil to cut him? FFS.
That's because he had 2 years left on his contract and went downhill faster than was expected.. God forbid. It's really too bad that the Patriots didn't designate him as a June 1st cut to spread the cap hit between this year and next, but oh well.

I am not sure that is correct. BB would probably want a rain day fund of 2M if something happened. If true I think it is ill advisable to have positioned ourselves this way when it could have been avoided with just a few minor moves.

Chandler jones will probably get paid like an elite pass rushing DE and that would be great for him to get set up for life, but there's no way he'll get that in New England. The team is too familiar with the limitations in his game. Might as well get a draft pick for him before he cashes out.

Hopefully we can keep 2 of hightower/collins/Jones. If someone put a gun to my head and said pick one to walk today, it would probably be Jones.

Or they cash-in with another championship. You generally do better if you play your best players. There are other ways to free up cap space.

Question is whether the Patriots will offer Solder a reasonable contract extension or take a hard-assed
stance and trade him despite not having an adequate replacement. I'll bet on the latter.

Reasonable based on what? Market for LTs or what the team thinks he deserves?

Based on the 76 players on the current roster that can play DE, Pats are clearly preparing for potential life without Jones in 2017.

The Patriot's probably think he deserves Ryan Wendell pay.
Little higher than that.

If Solder expects top LT money he will not get it here.

The Pats know what they have in Soldier. Gugs said he was one of the better ones in the league. "The pats are cheap" thing is so old here.

Stop being a troll.

No way! Jamie Collins man!

As of tomorrow night, Fleming will be on the 53 man roster and Solder traded.

If its what is best for the team that that is fine. We need more cap room as the IR guys salaries are going to count against the cap on the 10th.

They spend to the cap every year and always have the reserve avail. They cant keep excellent players at each position.

2016’s cap is looking horrifying:

Tom Brady-$15,000,000.00
Jerod Mayo-$11,400,000.00
Devin McCourty-$8,000,000.00
Chandler Jones-$7,799,000.00
Dont'a Hightower-$7,751,000.00
Sebastian Vollmer-$7,023,834.00
Jabaal Sheard-$7,000,000.00
Danny Amendola-$6,866,666.00
Rob Gronkowski-$6,650,000.00
Julian Edelman-$5,156,250.00
Marcus Cannon-$4,816,668.00
Rob Ninkovich-$4,750,000.00
Stephen Gostkowski-$4,100,000.00

The ones in bold are likely to be reworked in some capacity (extension, pay reduction, or released) depending on the player.

Why do you find that horrifying? 3 guys Mayo, Cannon and Amendola are overpaid, who else do you see as bad deals?

We need at least $3M in cap money for players added during the years, bonuses earned, and to make it possible to trade for a player.
I think that there are three primary sources of cap money. There are others who could be extended or have salary converted to bonus to have some minor effects. I suppose 3 or 4 of these might make a significant difference.

THE BIG THREE
I believe that we have discussed these as the big three possibilities for months. Miguel can tell us whether any of these violated CBA rules.

SOLDER
We could extend or trade Solder. This would save enought all by itself.

GRONKOWSKI
Part of Gronk's salary could be moved to bonus.

BRADY
Part of Brady's salary can be moved to bonus

A couple of more suggestions:

Start injury-settling the JAGs on IR, most of whom - Boyce, Derby, Gaffney, Groy, Hughes, Krause, Tyms - will never contribute here (or anywhere else, probably).

And for the love of Ganja Almighty, get rid of Alan Branch immediately.

These cap amounts are not unreasonable. We have deferred the cap hit on lots of these contracts. Your failure to look at whole contracts gives you this result. Almost all of this is just part of cap accounting.

You think that 6 contracts must be modified. Your only choices are extension, pay reduction or release. You say this without pointing out how much, if any, cap money would be saved.

You don't even mention the #1 most likely source of the $3M of cap money we need: Solder. If Solder were to be extended, the so-called cap issue would go away. Yes, tehre could be other extensions. I'm sure the team would love to extend lots of these players. It could happen now. Mid-season is a more likely time.

BTW, Are you suggested that Brady be extended, given a cut in pay (below his Half price contract) or be released? Those are the 3 options listed.

What is needed is an conversion of the salaries of Gronkowski and/or Brady into a $1M salary, with the rest being converted to a bonus.

It is too last to reach with injury settlements with Derby, Gaffney, Hughes and Tyms. Teams have 5 days to reach an injury settlement with a player.
