Final round of roster cuts for Patriots

Dax Swanson makes me sad. Felt he's looked pretty good the last two preseasons and the Pats are running light on CBs. Must not have the ST chops.

Currently overweight on EDGE, OL, and S, which might indicate the Pats are shopping people high-up (Solder? Nink? ... Chung?)

possible trade in upcoming weeks

Far more likely is that NE will toss one when they make a waiver claim.

by signing him for one day and then waiving it blocks other teams form putting him on PS

Not that I'm aware of. Teams can make a waiver claim and they have equal rights to offer a PS contract. All signing him does is gives NE extra time to make their pitch.

How do you figure they are overweight on the O-line when they only have 10 there?? That's their NORMAL amount.

Nine is... they've gone as low as eight before. I know others have argued up the thread but the Pats love TE/OT tweeners so I think you can count Williams there if you want and say 11.

Here are the players that have been cut (per NFL.com) that I found interesting for the Patriots.

Jah Reid - OL
Keo Shiloh - DB (more of a special teamer)
Brandon Ghee - CB
Kourtnei Brown - LB (supposedly was spoken very highly of by Vrabel during Hard Knocks)
James Jones - WR
Jeff Maehl - WR
Charles James - CB/RB (another big Hard Knocks stand-out)
Trey Millard - FB (cut as part of the 49ers cuts to 75)

Wrong. 10 is their normal. Go back and look over the past 15 years. Their normal is to carry 2OC, 4OG, and 4OT going into the season..

So the "Dobson is a sure gonner" narrative was BS like I thought.

On Wikipedia I get 10, 9, 8, 9 for 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014. Just don't recall many times this team has carried more than 2 OT and 2 IOL backups.

One strategy some teams use is to cut the guys you want on your practice squad AFTER practice squads are created. That way, other teams have already created theirs and it's easier to slip a guy through waivers.

Eric Martin and maybe Rufus Johnson strike me as types of guys the Patriots could release tomorrow and sign to practice squad on Monday.

Rufus was very impressive, I say he stays and is safe, Martin on the other hand is a different story :)

Is there still an elephant in the room with the salary cap situation?

Are they being paid and how does that affect cap? Do they count against the 53? Can they be poached by other teams?

Yes, players on IR and PUP get paid and count against cap.

Pats have had an undrafted rookie free agent make the Week 1 roster for 11 straight years. If Harper survives, he'd make it 12 in a row.

Could be two if Andrews makes it.

I read that this is the 3rd longest. Which two teams have a longer streak? I'm guessing Steelers and Packers? Anyone know?

2nd or 3rd year I believe.

And a 6th round pick from the Saints! Shades of Rob Ninkovich? Sean Payton will kill himself, not to mention Saints fans lol. I already saw a thread on the Saints forum after the Packers game. :p

Net cost: 2017 7th, Matt Wells, Jordan Devey.

That's fine. I prefer Williams,Saunders and Cleveland over Wells and Devey assuming Saunders and Cleveland make it to the PS.

Wasn't the 7th a conditional pick? Does that mean we don't owe them anything because the player didn't make the team?

Is Cadet a bad runner or has he just not been given many carries? I liked what I heard about him from Saints fans. Sounds like he's similar to Vereen.

The knock on him is he can't block.

Wait, there are 53 players on the roster. But that doesn't include Blount. So will one of the four running backs be released or cut once he returns from suspension?

A player will be released or placed on ir when Blount returns.

And I assume once LaFell and Chris Jones comes off of PUP, they'll have to make another cut?
