Final round of roster cuts for Patriots

My concern is that the Pats don't seem to have anyone in the pipeline like they did when they had Ashworth and Gorin on the PS.. Martin and Hauptmann make Ashworth and Gorin look like All-Pros..

Well, it looks like we have one unanticipated rookie sticking (for the time being) in Andrews. They must see something in him.

Why is everyone concluding this already? Am I missing a release or something? Was Harper cut when I wasn't looking?

Unless adding Stork and Wendell has the same stabilizing effect that it had last year

True, as you and others have stated, the full time starters weren't really playing in preseason. That means the first couple of games they will need to knock the rust off instead of doing it during preseason. I guess I should have reworded my comment that the OL will be a concern to *start* the season. I expect them to get better as the season progresses like last year. Those first few games last year was rough OL play until Stork got inserted as C.

Looks like Andrews has made the team as an UDFA.
Yeah, Supafly and I discussed him and I felt he had a good chance of making it. Supa thought he would end up on the PS if he could clear waivers. I definitely saw the merit in what Supafly was saying at the time (very intelligent poster on the board), but I just continued to have a feeling about the kid. I've liked everything I have read about him to this point. He is my version of Malcolm Butler this years, though obvious a vastly different role on the team. I think we can develop him into something because he has a very good work ethic by all accounts. Plus, I really didn't think he would clear waivers.

My only disappointment so far this weekend is Morris.
I liked him too but he was bad in coverage.

If he was 30lbs bigger he'd be there. Would like to see another ILB thumper in the middle. Freeny and Fleming aint it.

If only Spikes hadn't hit that deer....

I thought he played respectfully throughout the preseason. Did any catch if he got any reps at g last night with wendy playing c? I wasn't paying much attention...

That said, I don't know who goes to make room for him. Maybe the "surprise" cut is Wendell (also fits the bill as a decent cap savings). I'm not sure this would be wise (and I'm not a Wendell fan by any means), but may be a Longshot possibility.

They keep Wendy. He backs up 3 interior OL positions.

Its ok to look for savings but hes very valuable.

I don't know, I think Spikes was a short timer anyway. Here is my theory on why o_O

BB has won his 6th ring, 4th as a head coach. He is generally acknowledged to be the greatest head coach of our time. He is 63. He has recently gone through this completely fabricated Deflategate nonsense which must have driven him crazy.

I think that BB has decided that at this point in his career, with rare exceptions, he wants to minimize the BS and he wants to coach smart, professional, non-knucklehead players.

Just look at his team and who he has drafted:

Defensive backfield: Extremely smart, professional, non-knucklehead players. Many were drafted as "coach on the field types" known for their smarts instead of their athletic ability ...Wilson, Harmon, Richards, maybe even McCourtney (remember how the draftniks said he was a special teams player?).

Linebackers: Very, very professional, smart players.

Defensive line: Again, very professional non-knucklehead players.

Quarterbacks: A very smart professional backup and perhaps the smartest, most professional quarterback of all time starting.

Offensive Line: Professional and smart.

Receivers: Very smart (they have to be to work in the TB offense) and very professional, no knuckleheads.

Tight End: also very smart (Gronk learned the TB offense immediately) and professional (on the field). I would argue that Gronk has this "goofy" image (that he will doubtlessly make tons of money from), but he is not a knucklehead, he is a true pro, he is just smart about developing his "brand" (I bet he will be making loads of money after his football career is over).

Running Back: The only exception to the rule. One rookie knucklehead who let Sports Illustrated go to his head, overslept, and sat the rest of the year. Another obvious knucklehead who was not retained by the Patriots, he doubled down on being a knucklehead with the Steelers and got released, and was picked up by the Patriots for a song with almost no guaranteed money.

That is only two knuckleheads, and both could be released at any time (would anyone be surprised if either was released at some point this year?). Think of all of the other knucklehead candidates that have been released lately: Spikes (gone), Dennard (gone).

I think that BB has decided that at age 63, with six rings, he is going to coach players he actually likes and respects, smart, players. I think BB has made the Patriots (with rare exceptions) a Non-KnuckleHead Zone (except for perhaps the owner, but that is for another day).

Please feel free to flame away. :D

Thoughtful post.

I don't think BB has changed one bit.

Blount is a knucklehead but BB knows what makes him tick so he is ok with him.

Gray is another steakhead. Hes a kid and small potatoes.

I bet if an elite talent was available for decent dollars but had a bit of a non-violent history, he'd snap him up. Like you say he is 63 years old, he has 4 SB rings here and he wants 5. Elite talent gets you closer to that goal.

Not really a flame, but just a point of how little media understand BB: He said that McCourty was a "four down" player. For some reason, they seemed to understand that he was a fourth-down player.

Yeah, as much potential as Mason has, I think he might need one more year. I would go with a starting OL of Solder, Wendell, Stork, Jackson and Vollmer,

If nothing else because how unsettled Solder was last year with a rookie next to him.

Outplayed who? Wendy? He played C last night.

Not sure Shaq is ready, Peach.
He didn't look ready from my vantage point. He got caught empty handed on a couple pass plays. He needs some more time. He will be fine, just more time.

Outplayed Tre Jackson IMO. On pulls, especially, Mason was very good.
Jackson hasn't really blown me away, he's looked serviceable but not great. Have to remember he's still a rookie though. On the other hand, Mason has had crappy plays and then flashes total brilliance on other plays.
