NFL owners to discuss changing Goodell's role in disciplinary process

What an F'ing joke. Look, the problem ISN'T the CBA!!! It isn't Article 46; it is the COMMISSIONER who is drunk with power. Article 46 was formerly a sacred clause that was necessary for good men like Tagliabue and Rozelle to have final say to protect the true integrity of the game, rather than to have some wannabe dictator put on a Nazi-like propaganda campaign of misinformation information, deny fundamental fairness and setup a kangaroo court.

Just FIRE this moron!!! Just based on the fact you need to neuter him, says a lot. He will ultimately cause great, irreparable harm to the NFL.

I still think it's absurd that a case about alleged deflation of balls that may not have happened is what brought us to a point that the owners are reconsidering the disciplinary process, and not the case where Roger Goodell shirked on crystal clear spousal abuse in the Rice case. I guess all it took was Roger railroading TB all the way to a court of law and actually, brazenly, telling the court that it had no business legislating on the NFL.

Goodell might have been the catalyst/genesis, however and unfortunately, I suspect the cat is now out of the bag. The next commissioner will inherit a culture and employees who were enthusiastically part of King Goodell's crusades into the holy land. The next commissioner will also inherit some owners who "liked the cut of Goodell's jib".

IMHO the office is forever tainted with the stench of megalomania. Only a change in documents/procedures will provide a level of semi-certainty that the absurdities will cease to some degree.
I believe it is an easy change. Something along the lines of all suspensions that are appealed will be sent to a neutral third party. And once Goodell knows his decisions will be judged by a third party it will in itself cause beneficial change (to some degree). It will make Goodell's decisions be filtered through a 'but will a third party find it reasonable?' instead of the current 'whatever I think is reasonable on any given day is what reasonable means. Anyone who doesn't like it can shove off'.
It's not perfect by any means but it is a step in the right direction.

They can start by looking at how other sports leagues handle disciplinary matters

Specifics of policies are different, but MLB, NHL, & NBA provide independent review of commish discipline for off-field/ice/court discipline

In MLB & NBA, independent arb determines if commish had "just cause." NHL asks if "supported by substantial evidence & not unreasonable."

There is absolutely zero reason not to have an independent and fair process for the NFL players just like these other sports organizations. It hasn't been a problem until Roger Goodell came into office. And now that he has abused his power and ruined that privilege, the NFL needs to change the process.

The owners want him to imbibe that power. The problem is he can't hold his liquor when he does the kegstand in federal court.

The owners will now look for someone / something that can.

They just need to ****can this clown. But I guess this would be a good start.

Yes, I can predict the change.

Let's hire better lawyers who can make things bullet-proof.

They aren't giving up power unless it hurts their wallet.

19-24 owners. Might take a while, but eventually he'll go. He won't change and he's killing the league, which means $$$, which is the only thing all owners understand.

All the cable outlets are going to be looking to renegotiate, because somebody signed them to contracts that are going to kill them. Do you think dunderhead can handle that?

Also, every player in the league with a beef will appeal or sue now. Cracks in the armor.

However when someone messes up so significantly that you need to change your policies firing that person should be the starting point.

The players should strike in 2016 until the owners replace Goodell. I would sacrifice an entire season to get rid of this clown - he's been that bad.

If was up to the NFL ownership, they'd still be rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic in 2015.

What is the downside for the NFL for using neutral arbiters? It would bring bring peace to the relations with the union and it will insulated them from blame for unpopular decisions.

SEND HIM TO THE LIONS!!! (real ones not Detroit.)

It's awesome. Roger is out in the middle of the lake and the ice is slowly cracking below him. The pee is now starting to drip down his leg and the poo won't be far behind,
Lmao, couldn't happen to a better guy.

Unfortunately, the CBA contains a no strike/no lockout/no early termination clause that prevents either side from initiating a stoppage until 2021 (if either side does, the other can go to court and compel them to adhere to the CBA).

Power. They want absolute authority to do whatever they want. They'd rather make the wrong decisions than let someone else make the right ones.

And if they do ultimately decide to change how they handle discipline, I don't see them giving that away for free. I expect them to try to make the players agree to concede something in exchange.
