And lose the rest of 2016s draft after the ex-Jets in the league office make this an offense retroactive to September 2015? No.

I know you're trying to be funny, but the material needs work.

Be like Judge Berman and don't rush it........;)

Call me an ol' sentimental fool...but I still get giddy when I watch Cassel at his finest...2008 Jets game was awesome.

Would Cassel count among the actives as a emmergency QB?
Yes, they got rid or the emer QB rule a few years ago. Now it's just 46 active players, it used to be 45+ an emer QB.

One of my favorite sports moments ever. Damn you Wilfork for calling tails...

If they sign Cassel and he is on the roster for week 1, isn't his contract guaranteed for the year as a vested veteran?

The only money that would be guaranteed would be if they gave him a signing bonus. As a veteran, his minimum salary would be around $750k, but they could cut him at any time and get his numbers off the books

Steven Hawking?
I'd take him. Play him vs the Ravens and see how long it takes before competition committee outlaws wheelchairs. I'm thinking they have an emergency meeting by halftime.

Cassell is a candidate for the unsigned but ready and willing, Shadow Roster, IMHO. If he were released by the Bills, which I doubt.

I thought The NFL CBA guarantees salaries for vested veterans on a team's roster when Week 1 arrives. Which is why some teams sign a veteran after the first game so they can cut them without having the cap hit...

Stick with Grap. Cassel was brought in to Buffalo to start.. And now he is probably gone.. Better to see what we have.. Not like he was a seventh round pick..

Folks - - - this is a NO-BRAINER!!!!!

The Pats play Buffalo (who should be their biggest divisional rival this year) on the road in 18 days.

At the very least, bring him in to get the scouting/play system.

.
Bill can call Cassel up and say "hey Matt, I think we can both agree that you owe your lucrative NFL career to me, so how's about you come up to Foxboro for a 'workout' and bring a copy of Rexy's playbook with ya?"

Anyone who can't see the value of doing that versus keep Ryan Freaking Lindley around is simply brain dead.

Cassel knows Josh McDaniels' system and has the Buffalo playbook. Pats play Buffalo on the road in 18 days for crying out loud. That's a bigger game than the Steelers game.

I really see zero downside to swapping Cassel for Lindley, and a lot of upside (assuming Brady's suspension stays as is). Knows the playbook, knows Buffalo's playbook, has veteran starting experience, and is better than Lindley. The only reason I can think of NOT to sign Cassel is if he wants more than, say, $800-900k for the year.

I personally think the team should keep in touch with him and sign him the day after the opener, so his salary isn't guaranteed. This is also assuming no one else makes a move for him, which at this point in the year, seems unlikely.

If the bills are going with tyrod it is a mobile offense. They eould have to change the offense with cassell. Not with manuel. So it does make some sense.

A technical question is whether lindleys salary is guaranteed as a vested veteran. Cassells would be. The patriots are very tight against the cap.

For a two game settlement I might stick with the cheaper alternative and roll the dice. For a four game suspension I might roll with the cheaper for a game and then hope to get cassell.

Under any situation he would prefer anywhere else since this really looks like a definite release after four games.
