Can Belichick pull another "Mayo trade" to make up for the loss of our 1st round draft pick?

Remember the Patriots had to forfeit their first-round draft pick due to the Spygate fallout? But because of a shrewd trade, the Pats had the 49ers’ first-round pick to fall back on. The Niners graciously awarded the Patriots with the seventh overall pick, and Belichick was able to stick it to the league with a top-10 draft pick. Not only that, but we got Jerod Mayo out of that deal, and Mayo's been with the team ever since.

So we've seen Belichick master the draft to our advantage before. Can he pull this off one more time, and get around the team's penalty?

Maybe we trade Jerod Mayo... :D

He CAN, but I don't want him to....

The trade would be to one of the teams that is a QB away from taking the next step : Houston, Buffalo, NYJ. And the bait would be Brady. You get first rounders for Brady and whichever pick is the lowest between the traded pick and NE's becomes the first rounder you lost.

Again : just because something is possible, does NOT mean you SHOULD. I know I wouldn't.

Not really, because if we get a better pick than the one we earn via record, it's the better pick that's taken away.

The league REALLY was out to hurt the Pats.

That's what burns me most about Kraft. The league is being very nasty, and he's being cuddly and deferential. If I were in his position I'd bring the pain right back at them, examples being:
  • Legal actions to the extent practicable. E.g., provide all possible help to any suit McNally/Jastremski want to bring.
  • Public statements with unpleasant needles for the league.
  • Support fan contests in which they create things criticizing the league's unfairness.
  • Paying private investigators to check into key league personnel.
  • If the league manages to prevent any of this, disclosure of that fact in a needling way, such as "We have received direct orders from the league office prohibiting us from answering your question truthfully."

Sorry, Bro, but the Patriots only got that magical 1st Rounder by trading a 1st Rounder.

We traded the Miners our 2007 1st Rounder for their 2007 4th Rounder and their 2008 1st Rounder.

Sorry, Bro: It ain't happening.

*We eventually parlayed that Trade into picking up Randy Moss, too, amusingly enough.

Maybe they trade Chandler Jones to 49ers and we get their 1st rounder that turns into the 1st overall pick. Then we trade down for future first rounders and still pick in the top 10. So even if Jetdell tries to take another first rounder, we have back up:p

IMO, I think we should hope that this years class will end up being one of Bill's strongest he's had. If that happens, I think it'll make up for the lost pick.

Since we don't have a first rounder, and the extra cap space we will have, we might go heavy in free agency to make up for the 1st rounder....then Jetdell tries to manipulate the cap somehow to screw us and take another first rounder!

Not unless we trade off someone good. We traded Deion Branch to SEA in '06 for their #1 in '07 (#24), so Bill traded our pick (#28) in '07 to SF which wound up being #7 in '08, which we traded to NO with #164 for #'s 10 & 78 (Mayo and Crable). So we'd have to trade off someone good or a future #1 to recoup that pick.

And now I'm getting dizzy.o_O

I honestly think that if the judge vacates the suspension and somehow says there was no wrongdoing by brady, the wells report already cleared the rest of the pats. So we have 2 people saying the pats did nothing, Kraft can then go after the picks since a federal judge and an "independent" investigator cleared everyone with the pats.

I can't think of a team what would give up a 2nd round pick for Jerod Mayo, never mind a 1st. Never mind the $3 mil cap hit we'd take for trading him anyway.

Why are people coming up with desperate scenarios to trade Mayo? He's a Pro Bowl middle linebacker and hes back and healthy... he needs to be back there with Collins and Hightower, leading the charge on a front 7 that will tear offensive lines and QBs to pieces.

We'd get a 1st for Gronk.

Just playin':). I think we could get the Texans 1st for Garoppolo though. ;)

Wait...who's the "first person" to claim that the Pats did nothing wrong? Obviously, the Wells report found (or at least suggested) shadiness from within the organization, or the NFL never would've taken away the two draft picks to begin with.

There's no way in hell we're getting those picks back, especially since this current process/case is simply dealing with the fact that there's procedural issues within the collective bargaining agreement, and not enough proof against Tom Brady, specifically.

Speaking as an organization, Bob Kraft gave up the right to fight when he refused to appeal--not that it would've mattered. Obviously, Goodell was going to rule the same way no matter what.

The wells report specifically stated it cleared the whole organization, bb and all, that only Brady and the 2 ball guys were guilty. Robert Kraft hasn't closed the door where he can go back on his word and go after the picks. And that's why I said, if somehow Berman says Brady was innocent, everyone is now innocent. NFL has lost, time to go for the picks. Quite simple.

I typed the response to this above.

Yes, the door is quite closed. As a matter of fact, it's slammed shut permanently.

Kraft had a 10 day window to appeal that he gave up. He chose not to pursue it. Who is he going to go back to in order to try and get the picks? The process is over.

And yes--the fact that the organization was still at fault is the reason why the picks were taken, so it doesn't matter anyway.

He has said nothing and, more importantly, done nothing, to indicate that he has any inclination at all to do this.

This is a pipe dream on your part, IMO.
