Bills release Fred Jackson

We once signed a 34-year-old running back named Fred Taylor, who previously had spent the entirety of his career with one team.

That worked out pretty decently.

Why not sign Fred Jackson as well...
It's the "Rule of Running Backs Named Fred Whose Last Names Can Also Be First Names", it works every time. Even more reliable than that make-believe "Ideal Gas Law".

As someone has said previously. Fj's ability to pick up the blitz might be really important this year with the struggles of the ol. Not to mention, I like fj's path through the NFL. Highly respected earn his spot every down kind of player. Imo those guys are a very valuable commodity. As far as his age goes, he has always had to split carries with someone else, so I feel he has something left in the tank. How many carries does he have. I am gonna look it up.

1300 carries in 9 years.
He has some tread left.

At 34, he's lasted longer than I would have expected, the guy has had a good career. But expecting him to take time away from Blount who's 28 is crazy talk.

Right, said Fred!

I'm not expecting him to take time away from Blunt; I'm expecting him to take time away from White & Cadet, and perhaps Lewis too.

A couple years ago I would've been bullish on bringing him in. Now, not so much. He might have a little left in the tank, but if the Pats are going to chance a roster spot on RB uncertainty, I'd rather they went with Lewis/White/Cadet.

i always liked him but always seems to be hurt. I also remember seeing a piece on him that he grew up right by dallas stadium and was a huge cowboys fan. I think both Pats and Cowboys will take a look.

Personally, I don't believe that it would be as crazy as you may feel.

Jackson is one of those typical kinds of BB signings, in terms of leadership, the way he carries himself, the ability to catch passes out of the backfield, run the ball effectively, and pick up the blitz.

We've seen plenty of these types of players come here to have one last productive season, and I'm not even 100 percent convinced that this will definitely be Jackson's last season. He may have one more left in the tank for 2016, as well.

We may already have our RB field set, however, as well as the strong possibility of another team offering him a better deal in terms of playing time/money.

What's Sammy Morris up to?

Seriously though, Dion Lewis is on the bubble and meanwhile, Fred Jackson is an option?

I really like Lewis and hoped he make the roster even if it's a long shot but if Jackson is available, I see that as an upgrade. He doesn't even have to be the lead back or the 3rd down back. Just having him would make the RB depth that much deeper. Blount, Gray, Bolden, White, Jackson would look like a pretty good RB group to me. At 34 years old and the possibility of having to play 19 games, being the lead back might be too much. His age is what scares me. He is the oldest active RB in the NFL as of 2015. At this stage of his career, I think Belichick would have to manage his playing time to get maximum production.

This guy has Patriots written all over him. This is my first time saying this and I mean it, SIGN THE BEAST. LOL He may be a little old, but I think Freddie has game left. He'd be our old version of Forte (who is one of my favorite players in the league). Do we really know what we have beyond Blount?

It really made no sense for the bills to have him and Spiller for as long as they did. I assume that a big part of it was injury insurance for Spiller, but as a pats fan, I was always glad to see Fred Jackson take some carries away from him.

Signing Jackson would be a classic BB type of move. A vet a bit up there in age who has had success against the Patriots. Just don't see where the fit it with Blount and J.G, still wouldn't surprise me if he is brought on board.

I'm concerned about the age and taking a roster spot from younger guys who might be the future...but you know Fred would BRING IT against the Bills. He should start only 2 games...both against the Bills.

Food for thought:

LeSean McCoy, while younger, has just under 200 more carries than Fred Jackson and a similar number of receptions.

This one of the vets I would feel most confident in the Patriots signing (way more than Reggie Wayne for example) - he's such a great locker room presence and a genuine leader of men.

He's always brought it 110% every game without the need to resort to smack talk or showmanship - this is a guy you want on your team.

He was the one guy on a consistently awful Bills team that seemed to sting us every time with a big play or 3rd down conversion - think what he might do under Belichick and working with Brady - think about the awesome level of pass pro he offers.

Sign the beast.

Meh.

Made of glass throughout his career, with meh-at-best production the last 3 years.

He had a couple of good games vs. the Patriots. I think that's coloring a lot of people's perspectives here.

If you are looking for a number 1 RB, yes most probably. But if you want a better receiving RB -- especially someone who is better at pass protection -- than who we have so far then I don't see a problem bringing him in and checking him out. Nobody expects him to rush for 1k..

Respect. I hear what you're saying, but "meh" production is all we need. I would feel comfortable with a vet presence who can play all aspects of the game to spell Blount and bring the younger guys along. The age concerns me a bit, as some have said, but I still think this guy is perfect for our team and offense. With all of the other guys I've seen suggested for "sign the beast," this is one I would feel extremely good about.
