Reminds me of Asante. Competitive in the short and intermediate areas. Loves to jump routes but susceptible to getting beat deep.

Not seeing it, to be honest. Other than against Miami and this past week, there is little evidence that Butler is susceptible to getting beat deep and he doesn't jump routes (aside from one :)) the way Samuel did, either. Going a step further, Butler looks a lot more fluid in M2M coverage and is a much stronger tackler as well.

Butler seems to like tackling, whereas Samuel avoided it. Oh and Butler made a SB sealing interception, Samuel botched his.

Asante tackled at first, but then stopped when he solidified himself. He didnt make that SB int though :(

Going from a small sample size.

Asante caught flak but to me was a good player while he was here.

I'm unsure what you mean here. The sample size is small, but they appear to be totally different corners to me. I also didn't say Asante wasn't a good player, in fact I think he was much better than simply, "good."

Butler got beat a few times in the SB. He tripped a reciever otherwise it would have been a huge gain and he got away with it, got beat down the sidelines but jumped that pass which sealed it for us. In pre season, he's gotten beat a few times but is really competitive on short routes.

Sounds like Asante to me so far.

Not at all. The receiver he tripped was running a crossing route, so it doesn't meet your description, and he wasn't beat deep down the sidelines either. He was beat once deep in the preseason and has been competitive on all routes otherwise, not just the short ones. Most importantly, he moves differently than Asante.

Still not seeing it. If all it takes to compare two cornerbacks is that they play the same position and get beat deep occasionally, you're going to find a lot of similarity out there.

Lol at moves differently than Asante. What's next, his hair style is different too.

He got beat in that crossing route because he was looking to jump the route. And he did get beat down the sidelines.

 I honestly can't tell if this is satire. If not, then feel free to believe what you want to believe.

Sounds like you can't tell a lot of things;)

So now we have had the dress rehearsal. Time to take a close look.

Butler had his worst game of the preseason but is still the #1. He will have growing pains but by the end of the year should be all set.

One interesting thing Manx pointed out is Brown played outside #2 CB when only 2 CBs were on the field opposite Butler. When 3 were on the field (in that case it was Fletcher) he slide into the slot. This was consistent in the first 10 plays of the game.

It appears Brown has truly locked down the #2 CB spot and will be on the field regardless of formation.

The #3 spot is still up in the air Between Fletcher/Ryan/McClain. Personally I would go with Fletcher. He to me has been the most consistent of the 3 and his start as the 3rd CB tonight shows he has the edge IMO.

Ryan actually had his best game of the preseason and was very solid all around. I know most people on here are not Ryan fans at this point but it is worth acknowledging he did well tonight. McClain was the worst DB i saw on the field tonight as Swanson outplayed him tonight. I don't think Swanson makes the team but he looks like a PS candidate for sure.

Safety became pretty interesting tonight imo. McCourty is the clear lock at FS but if i was to throw out my starting line up right now I would probably more likely than not put Richards beside him. He showed a few bad things but when he shows up he shows up and his mistakes are few and will lessen. Right now i personally have him ahead of Chung as a run stopper and Harmon and a pass defender. I don't see a reason to take him off the field frankly. This is a pick no one really liked at the time including me but if it was take him at that spot or don't get him at all I would probably take him there judging by how he played.

Chung was Chung. Some good things and some bad things and some getting passed on and beat by a TE. He is what he is and does his job fairly well. I think he is a good option to mix still if you want to go heavy in your DBs and his coverage is often competitive and takes a good throw to beat him. Harmon had a much better game than last game. He did allow a few completions but was in the face of WRs and did not allow any over the top plays.

Wilson/Ebner is a coin toss. Ebner was on STs tonight and did some good things. He also played DB and frankly did no worse than what Wilson would do probably. I see them as 2 core STs you don't want on the field if you can help it. It is worth noting Wilson makes more than Ebner. Might decide things unless the coaches feel there is a clear difference.

Ryan is in some fans doghouse, never to exit. But I agree he did pretty well this game; and every game he turns in a good play or two amid the problems.

He appears to gamble and when he guesses wrong he can be beaten badly.

I like Ebners toughness, but I saw several times he was late coming over to help out on a WR.

Shades of the bad 2011, 2012 Safety play that I hoped never to see again. Meanwhile Tavon Wilson has improved.

I dont think Butler will face the #1 WR every week, its about matchups, some times could be better a Fletcher/Brown with safety help and Butler with the #2

Last year Revis seldom took the opponent's #1. That guy was double teamed; and Revis took #2 all alone.

I'd expect the same this season.

He's looked pretty good to good in limited action. Ask me again in a few weeks after he's been tasked with covering Antonio Brown and Sammy Watkins for a whole game, I guess.

They'll both be doubled, so we may still not have the best idea until later on in the season.

Even Sterling Moore shut down Larry Fitzgerald in bracketed coverage.

Wilson is gone, IMO. He didn't play much on Friday which is a bad sign.

I can't understand how people get on DB's every time a pass is completed to some one he's covering or when he gets beaten. Haven't you people noticed that BAD QB's complete over 50% of their passes and the new "Mendoza line" for NFL QB's is 60%. Good QB''s complete 70% Seeing a trend here? A LOT of passes are being completed against DB's So if you are going to subject DB's to scrutiny over EVERY completion against them, then you are going to be VERY busy, and NO DB will come out of it unscathed. :rolleyes;

Can't wait to see what this secondary looks like against the big dogs of the league. I'm not holding my breath tbh. I pray our front 7 takes a load off of the secondary
