I'd be hesitant to use the return-IR designation on him just in case he might take even longer to recover

That ex doctor + many online medical sources seem to say it's at least 4 months for recovery

Or perhaps there was some initial confusion regarding the reports of a broken shin (or perhaps Reiss was just confused in his Sunday morning column):

8. Since the NFL schedule was released in April, Patriots coaches have naturally locked in on their opening opponent, the Steelers. With that as a springboard, there were four notable developments with the Steelers within the past seven days -- starting center Maurkice Pouncey broke his fibula (same injury as Patriots fullback James Develin), the backup quarterback spot is now manned byMichael Vick instead of Bruce Gradkowski (dislocated finger), kicker Garrett Hartley (a replacement for injured Shaun Suisham) injured his hamstring, and up-and-coming receiver Martavis Bryant was suspended for the first four games of the season (pending appeal) for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. In other words, it wasn’t a very good week for the Steelers.

The tibia is the big, weight-bearing shin bone. The fibula is the little one. Maybe this is why the team is saying 6-8 weeks and an orthopedic doc, who knows his stuff but has about as much access to the injury details of a Patriot's player as the rest of us, says longer. Maybe Bill will wax eloquent about it in his Monday press conference and clear everything up for us.

Recall also that the doc in question was referred to as a "drunken quack" by Deadspin.

I'd shut him down for the season, go without a fullback, and use Shaq for short yardage situations (assuming Wendell starts at guard).

Use the roster spot elsewhere

I doubt that someone could come back that quick from a broken tib that requires a rod, the rod indicates the break is unstable. I have seen guys in motocross break tibs like this and come back after about three months but it takes them much longer to trust it.

I shattered the top of my tib 5 years ago in an off road race, so bad that at one point during surgery the option to remove the leg was on the table, but I was back on my bike in 4.5 months. I had very good surgeons and I heal well. Tib injuries are tough.

My 02. I got a lot of metal in me :).

I like Develin a lot, but I don't think the team values a fullback enough to keep him on the 53 for a bunch of weeks til he recovers, nor do I believe they'll use their only IR-DTR designation on him.

Wouldn't be surprised if he still gets IR'd. Hope not though.

I love Develin but the IR DTR you use in a guy like Collins, Edelman, Gronk, Stork, players of this caliber, when an injury happens during the regular season.

NE has used the IR DTR on Shiancoe and Siliga, so they don't set the bar that high for the designation. I agree that Develin probably doesn't meet it, but he isn't too far off. I'd say the bigger obstacle is that his injury appears to be too severe to make using it worthwhile.

If a top player get injured later, then you keep him on the 53, just as we always have. IR-DTR is an extra roster spot for 1/2 a year. We can use it or not use it.

That the Patriots didn't immediately send Devlin to IR makes it seem that they are at least considering the option of IR-DTR. Maybe they are waiting to see what they have on roster or if anybody comes available after cutdowns before they make a decision. They might wait until the last cutdown to 53 to make their decision. Maybe they give him an injury settlement and outright release him.

The delay is likely due to the team not wanting to pass Develin through waivers. If he's still not on IR after the 75 cutdown, then something might be in the cards.

As much as I like him I had Develin as a possible tough cut I mean the Pats use Fleming or Cannon for beef in short yardage. With Scott Chandler's ability doubled with Gronk we can run or pass from the Two TE formation, not much the D can do plus Gronk and Chandler are pretty Fast! for their Size!

I seriously doubt that FB is a dime a dozen position and we don't use it like most other Teams.

James Develin is returning to Foxboro today. Pats doctors will evaluate him before making any potential decision whether or not to IR him.

LaFell and Stork have not practiced. They are eligible for PUP.

If the prognosis and recovery time dictate 6-8 weeks, then the Pats have the option of IR-DTR for Develin.

Personally, while not a critical player he brings a lot to the table. OTOH, if someone like Gronk gets hurt week 1 but can come back Week 10, it would suck eggs not to be able to use that designation on him as it is being used for Gronk.

Is this correct? Is Stork on PUP? I don't think so, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I thought Stork practiced early on.
