OT: Drew Brees Walks Home After a Practice.

That's the bigger mistake. Rivers is at least in Brees' general vicinity as a talent, and he seemed more assuredly healthy at the time, so it's an understandable choice.

The other huge mistake was San Diego drafting Rivers in the first place, rather than trading down again and accumulating yet more talent at other positions. We're lucky they made that one.
Actually the Chargers drafted Eli Manning at #1 and traded him to the Giants in exchange for Rivers drafted #4, and the draft picks which became Shawne Merriman, Nick Kaeding and some forgotten OT.

That injury he suffered late in 2005 was pretty scary too. In hindsight it's easy to laugh at Culpepper over Brees, but at that point Brees was a big question mark.

Culpepper was also much better than people recall, as well.

Hence my use of the phrase "trading down again." :)

If Brady did this how would it be spun negatively by local and national press? Discuss.

"Walking? Like some kind of bum? What is he, too good to drive on the road with common folk? Come on, man!" - Cris Carter, between snorts of cocaine on NFL Live.

Apparently he stopped and talked with fans and signed autographs on the way. Seems about right.

No way, man. That can't be. More probable than not he held up a 7-eleven on the way home. Next thing you are going to tell me McNally actually took a leak in 90 seconds...whatever.

Brees is another example of a guy that needed some time to develop. He sat as a rookie, then started every game in his 2nd and 3rd year. The team went 8-8 in his first season as a starter (2nd year), then 2-9 in his second season (3rd year). He was completing less than 60% of his passes, with a 29 TD/31 INT 73.7 RAT so the team invested in Rivers.

He's also another example of how luck sometimes plays a huge role in success. Brees broke out the next season, but largely because Rivers held out for 4 weeks of training camp and missed the first two preseason games. If he had just shown up on time for camp, who knows? Brees ended up starting, probably to let the rookie catch up, and he emerged with a Pro Bowl trip and two excellent years as a starter. He went to New Orleans, where he'd become a top-5 QB and Pro Bowler and Super Bowl winner, but none of it might have happened if not for Rivers's hold-out.

I have always liked that guy. Just a good guy. I just hope he wasn't approached by the League to do this for a PR stunt. I choose to believe he is better than that.

Hope other stars do the same...

Nah, he had Randy Moss. People always say how well Cassell did when Brady was out, suggesting that Brady is just a "system" QB. But in 2008, Cassell had Moss at his peak, Welker at this peak, and Jabar Gaffney who was playing well. Not to mention a still young Ben Watson. Those receivers made Cassell look good, not the system.

Culpepper had Moss in those early years - maybe the best of moss. That is what has been impressive about Brady. With few exceptions, he has had no one. The likes of Welker and Branch would be unknowns if not for Brady. He makes receivers. Other receivers have made Culpepper.

Not to downplay how good Moss was, but 2004 was the best season of Culpepper's career and Moss was limited by injuries and finished with only 49 receptions. There was more to it than just Moss, Culpepper was a good QB in his own right who fell apart because of a botched rehab from a knee injury.

This may have been true to 2007 (certainly 2006 stands out), but after that Brady had Moss in his prime and has had the greatest tight end to ever walk onto a football field for the past 5 seasons. Welker and Edelman were or are both very good as well. Kevin Faulk may have been the best third down back of his generation.

Drew owns a bunch of Jimmy Johns in town so there's a viral/marketing aspect to this too.

But that's Drew and it's also life in N.O. Everything is close together, geographically speaking. It's a town where most people walk to their destinations. On a nice night, your average New Orleanian would probably choose to walk home from work, it's just the way people live here.

The really cool thing is that Drew and his family live in the middle of Uptown, not some gated community behind a security fence. You can just walk right up to his house and see the front door from the street. You can see them going out for a walk or taking the kids to McDonalds or something. Everybody knows where he lives, but nobody ever really bothers him, other than leaving little notes stuck to the fence or the telephone pole. People leave presents and stuff on the walk when they have a baby. It's just a cool community vibe. Most of the time the Saints players and coaches live out in the suburbs or whatever so when the guy bought a house right in town it shows what a part of the community he is.

This is pretty badass if you ask me. I am jealous too. I wish I lived somewhere that was more walkable and things closer together like that. I would like to have more of a "community" feel like that where I am. Props to Brees

The bike delivery rider is as tall as Brees!
