So now we have had the dress rehearsal. Time to take a close look.

Butler had his worst game of the preseason but is still the #1. He will have growing pains but by the end of the year should be all set.

One interesting thing Manx pointed out is Brown played outside #2 CB when only 2 CBs were on the field opposite Butler. When 3 were on the field (in that case it was Fletcher) he slide into the slot. This was consistent in the first 10 plays of the game.

It appears Brown has truly locked down the #2 CB spot and will be on the field regardless of formation.

The #3 spot is still up in the air Between Fletcher/Ryan/McClain. Personally I would go with Fletcher. He to me has been the most consistent of the 3 and his start as the 3rd CB tonight shows he has the edge IMO.

Ryan actually had his best game of the preseason and was very solid all around. I know most people on here are not Ryan fans at this point but it is worth acknowledging he did well tonight. McClain was the worst DB i saw on the field tonight as Swanson outplayed him tonight. I don't think Swanson makes the team but he looks like a PS candidate for sure.

Safety became pretty interesting tonight imo. McCourty is the clear lock at FS but if i was to throw out my starting line up right now I would probably more likely than not put Richards beside him. He showed a few bad things but when he shows up he shows up and his mistakes are few and will lessen. Right now i personally have him ahead of Chung as a run stopper and Harmon and a pass defender. I don't see a reason to take him off the field frankly. This is a pick no one really liked at the time including me but if it was take him at that spot or don't get him at all I would probably take him there judging by how he played.

Chung was Chung. Some good things and some bad things and some getting passed on and beat by a TE. He is what he is and does his job fairly well. I think he is a good option to mix still if you want to go heavy in your DBs and his coverage is often competitive and takes a good throw to beat him. Harmon had a much better game than last game. He did allow a few completions but was in the face of WRs and did not allow any over the top plays.

Wilson/Ebner is a coin toss. Ebner was on STs tonight and did some good things. He also played DB and frankly did no worse than what Wilson would do probably. I see them as 2 core STs you don't want on the field if you can help it. It is worth noting Wilson makes more than Ebner. Might decide things unless the coaches feel there is a clear difference.

Dax Swanson vs Ryan? Don't know what they see in practice, but Ryan has looked awful in coverage at times, though he almost got a pick yesterday.

the only area I might disagree with you on is Harmon. If they need to move McCourty up to SS to cover a TE then I think it will be Harmon that will play FS so that could take Richards off the field.

Fletcher will probably play CB2 more then CB3 per BB...

Bill Belichick also noting that Bradley Fletcher, at 6-0, 205, is a longer corner than others on roster. Plays primarily outside. #Patriots

I think thats how it will roll during the season. Fletcher plays better at CB2 then 3....similar to McCourty plays FS better then CB.

I still am amazed. He's gone from being a no-name undrafted rookie to becoming the #1 starting cornerback for the reigning Super Bowl champs.... unbelievable!

I just hope we're not moving him up too fast

CORNER
I think that the starters are Butler and Brown, with Fletcher as the #3 back and perhaps the starters against some teams.

NICKEL BACK
I think that Belichick chose McClain to replace Arrington based on history of being a solid nickel back. I still see McClain as our nickel back. I do think that it is possible that, under certain circumstances, the 5th DB on the field could be a 3rd safety.

SAFETY
I still see Chung ahead of Richards at SS, and McCourty ahead of Harmon at FS. And yes, I could see going with McCourty and Harmon on passing downs. In any case, the good news is that we have four solid safeties.

10th and or 11th DEFENSIVE BACK
Just ten days ago, we were set with 11 defensive backs. Now it seems that we have nine who will get all the reps, even with an injury or two.

I think that we all agree that it is a good idea to have at least one more defensive back. Swanson has played well. he could actually be useful as a defensive back.

Ebner or Wilson could make the team, but as special team only players. I think that a LB could beat them out, or not.

CB

I think it became fairly clear yesterday that the three starters (including NB) are Malcolm Butler, Tarrell Brown and Bradley Fletcher with Brown as CB2 in base and NB in sub with Fletcher going to CB2. All this assumes no injuries, trades or signings of course.

McClain and Ryan are the two backups at CB with Swanson on the bubble I imagine.

S

I agree with how you see it except to say that if Richards continues to play like he did yesterday, he'll be challenging Chung for the starting job sooner rather than later.

It's scary. But other than getting burned on that sideline route and the dude dropped the pass in the EZ hes been sticky.

Right but at least hes good. We just don't know HOW good.
He COULD be good.

We still haven't seen him start for a full game yet - never mind against a real, live #1 NFL WR.

It's a concern. He is very confident, though and I'm glad the two vets, Brown and Fletcher are looking pretty good.

My mild surprise prediction...Dax Swanson sticks, Ryan is cut.

Well...beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. I think he is good. Ive seen enough of him to feel strongly about that.

My big question is how good can he be and can he do it consistently.

If it was my decision I think I go that way too. Swanson seems like if need be he could play man, Ryan is just utterly useless in man coverage.

I think he COULD be good. There's not much of a sample size to go off of, IMO to know that for sure. He competes very hard on every play, which is a notable trait, I think.

If he can grade out "above-average" for 16 games, I think that's quite the achievement.

What do you think he is now? Hes either All-Pro, Good, Average or Sucky.

We are almost saying the same thing?

Everybody's saying that Fletcher plays outside when he's on the field.

However, most folks are also saying that when there are only 2 CBs, Brown is on the field (outside by definition) and Fletcher isn't.

I don't mean to give the ****ish answer, but I don't know what he is now.

He's looked pretty good to good in limited action. Ask me again in a few weeks after he's been tasked with covering Antonio Brown and Sammy Watkins for a whole game, I guess.
