Now that Develin is done for the season, who will be the team's fullback?

Trey Millard, this is the first thing I thought of. He probably won't make the 49ers 53 because they have Bruce Miller so he will probably become available.

I loved this guy at Oklahoma and he was definitely my draft binkie. He's a good blocker but probably not quite as good as Develin, but he is much more explosive and versatile. He would probably be our most versatile weapon since Hernandez. He can lead block as a FB, run and catch it out of the backfield, line up at TE and even slot WR. Not to mention, he was also Oklahoma's best special teams player.

If we could pick him up, we would have my biggest binkies from 2013 (Michael Williams) and 2014.

If he's as intriguing as you say the Pats would have to trade for him. I suspect a pick because they have the leverage in this situation.

Hmm.
If he is out all year, I say try to replace his spot in house, make it more of an H-back role.

...and now we know how Mike Williams will be spending his next few months. Versatility!

I think Cleveland is outplaying Hooman, and was optimistic Hooman would be cut or traded, I think he has some market value, he is kind of known around the league because people makes jokes with his name, and he is a SB champ after all with that good game against the ravens.

A Tibia fracture indeed is complicated, that sucks.

SF doesn't really have the roster space for him. He tore his ACL in October 2013, fell to the 7th round and didn't play at all last season. Because SF is pretty deep at RB and FB he hasn't had a chance to do much but play special teams in the preseason. I can't see any teams willing to give up anything for him.

I think SF will try and put him on the practice squad, so if we wanted to take a chance on him I think he will be available.

Good news:

More on James Develin, per team source: Broken tibia, surgery scheduled in Charlotte. Described as clean break. Hope is 6-8 week recovery.

Yup, I liked Millard a lot as well. Hopefully you're right about him not making the 49ers 53 and Bill picks him up.

The obvious answer is a split one:
  • Run fewer sets that call for an FB.
  • Use an RB or TE in some of them. I think Bolden has done this for a few snaps in the past, but I don't think it was many.
  • Use a lineman of some kind in jumbo packages.
Jumbo FBs in the past have included:
  • Seymour. That was a catastrophic failure, with at least two penalties and an injury.
  • Klecko.
  • Connolly.
  • Seau.
Sciz suggested Mason as the next one -- http://www.patsfans.com/new-england...lina-begins-8-28.1122703/page-63#post-4305287

Before Develin, we just ran a non-fullback offence didn't we? I think that's where we'll probably end up.

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking too. They clearly value the kinda player Develin is and what he brings to the team..... but I wouldn't say the FB position is an integral part of the offense.

That said, it shouldn't be too hard to bring in someone off waivers to fill in for that role. Right?

I'm sure they'll consider it but I think they'll either address it in house or go without the FB. Bringing someone in means getting another person up to speed with the offence, no easy task with little of the pre-season left.

This is not an small injury. Devlin was also a very versatile ST's player as well as a better than average blocker and receiver. He's been a key part of the running game for the last couple of years, including (IIRC) never being stoppe don a short yardage run. Devlin is on of the unnoticed players who you are only aware of when he's not there. He will be missed.
Yep. Make no mistake. This one hurts. Just gotta see how long the recovery is.

Put him on injured reserve designated to return. With the early bye week he will be back for our 7th or 8th game. We don't use the power run until the second half of the season anyway. In the meantime we can use Hooman like we did in 2012.

Gutted...big loss

They're saying 6-8 weeks now so I would agree with that.
