Here's what I don't get about Mortensen and King and why it isn't a bigger deal:
People feed misinformation to the sports media all the time. I'm sure players and coaches have not been totally honest with Mortensen and King when they talk about what they think of other players and coaches. GMs will put out misinformation to try and keep other teams from drafting a player they are targeting. Agents aren't going to reveal their true intentions about where their client would like to sign and for how much. It's almost not accurate to call these "lies" when the situation unfolds and we learn what was really going on. Coach X may not have got along with Linebacker Y, but told the media there were no problems between them because the team was better with the player on the field. GM Z may have wanted to draft a receiver, but talked up a defensive tackle to a reporter because he was hoping the receiver would fall to his team, and so on.
The NFL provided false information to King and Mortensen. What was the endgame? It wasn't for a player to get a better contract or a coach to maintain team unity or team to draft the player they wanted. That false PSI information did one thing: Made the Patriots look guilty.
This wasn't a disgruntled ex-coach or former employee looking for some sort of revenge. This was the league office intentionally putting false information in the media to frame a team. That should be what the media should be looking into. Heck, King and Mortensen should be leading that charge. They were the ones who got used and have to take the criticism for it. If the sports media won't do it, then an actual journalist should see this as a chance to not only expose the corruption in the NFL offices, but also show how the sports media is reluctant to cover the story because of their financial relationship with the league.
