Early, But Who Is Worth the IR - DTR Designation?

You don't use this before the regular season starts, it's the only bullet you have in the chamber, use it wisely.

For a pre season injury, depending on the player, either IR or roll the dice with 52 and keep him in the roster.

Yes, Roberts may be on the 53 man roster and then put on season ending IR, if this avoids him being subject to waivers.
Roberts can be put on IR without passing through waivers when the cutdown to 75 is made

No. Everyone who gets cut goes right to waivers, right?

Develin would be a candidate to return depending on the severity of his injury.

Prior to cutdown day, yes but at cutdown can go straight to IR without passing through waivers

Yup. I think we have our winner.......:(

We'll need him in December/January if that broken leg can heal in 4 months.

Has it been confirmed that its a broken leg?

6-8 weeks makes him the perfect candidate for this. Unless they want to run with 52 men on the roster.

That and the fact that he's the only guy in the organization at his position. He's very unlikely to get Wally Pipped.

I lik Develin as a player but I don't want to use the IR designated to return on a fullback.

When a key player goes down in the early weeks of the season, we will regret it.

This may be a difficult question some years, but it is a no-brainer this year. Devlin gets the designation (unless the reported timetable for his return is wrong), and if a key player goes down in week one or two, we have a 52-player roster.

Agree completely. DTR should be used for a player you want available for the playoffs, not a back of the roster player.

I would keep Develin on the roster (he was a lock anyway) and use the IR designation on someone else if need be. Hooman can play FB until he returns.

Jeff Howe ‏@jeffphowe 2m2 minutes ago
James Develin broke his fibia, per source. Surgery soon. He's out 6-8 weeks

Not as bad as I thought...could be a DTR candidate

Howe almost got it right....the fibia bone doesn't exist. He broke his tibia ("shin bone", weight bearing) as opposed to the fibula (smaller bone, sits lateral to tibia, non-weight bearing, quicker recovery....this is the bone that T. Owens broke in 2004).

o_O

All the IR-DtR does is save a roster spot. If you keep him on the roster, save the roster spot. If you "save it" for someone else it'll either go to waste or serve the exact same purpose, save a roster spot but with a different name attached..

Devlin will be IRed - the only question is whether he's DtR or not.
