He's still not > Lewis.
Didnt Lewis get arrested for pulling a fire alarm while drunk with the eagles ? Thats kind of a teen thing. He might have maturity problems. He has a good fake when he runs. Seems to have good sight, but really doesnt have alot of plays on film for me make a determination just yet.
If you have more NFL film Id love to watch. Thanks

I mean E. Smith looked great with the top 1-5 OL in dallas, but you stick him on the worst OL with B. Sanders he would have done pretty mediocre at best. Its one of many reason B.Sanders is considered the best.

Says here he was locked out of his hotel because you need a key after midnight. Sounds like he was stupid, but also a victim of circumstance.

I like Lewis but I feel like it's gonna be White who starts as the third down back. Maybe they keep more than one, maybe they keep all of them, but if I had to pick one guy I think Bill would choose over the others, it'd be White.

That wouldn't be a surprise, considering it was Bill who chose White via the draft. Lewis is the journeyman, so he'll have it harder.

As opposed to via the draft not in the draft?:p

I am rewatching the last game again right now, Lewis has moves but so does White. Lewis is the better runner but White seems to just be a little smoother as a receiver. I would rather have the more versatile guy, but I think Bill will value White's smoothness more, considering he will be a receiver 90% of the time and will rarely be running between the tackles.

We loved Cadet. He was a fan favorite

Thing about cadet is hes a very hard worker. Good at special teams, pass catching, blocking, and running.
His strength is around the ends, the short relief pass, he only goes north, not afraid of a hit, Very good hands, works hard, special teams, and not injury prone.
Weaknesses would be he has no 1/10th of second sight you see in great runners, not an effective bruiser back, mediun intellegence might take him a couple games to figure things out, and ok at kick off returns.

Hes someone you can depend on to do his best, and a good team mate. Its my opinion that any team would be smart to have him on the 53 man roster, because he can fit into most positions when injuries hit.

After watching this video, I'd love to understand this boards obsession with Cadet.

He looks slower and FAR less shifty than Lewis or White. 90% of his catches appeared as if my deceased grandparents were the ones in coverage.

You guys complain that White and Vereen went down when the wind blew on them? Watch the clips of Cadet vs the Lions, if he had ANY form of a juke he would have had 300 yards in that game. There were 3 or 4 times he no defender within 2-3 yards of him and still failed to get extra yards. I couldn't believe the lack of ability to break those tackles.

That's when he's not already falling to the turf before the would-be tackler arrives.

I respect that he was a fan favorite for NO, but I watch Lewis and I see Danny Woodhead (in terms of movement, not production). I see nothing of Cadet that gets me even remotely excited.

Dependable would be a word I'd label him with. That's not a bad thing, for sure, but you have fans on this board that talk him up as a total superstar.

Another difference is leg strength and the ability to run between the tackles. Nod goes to Lewis here imo. White is a good receiver and has good vision but is not explosive and goes down at first contact.

Yeah that's what I'm saying, White doesn't do much between the tackles but won't be asked to do that very often at all. Lewis can, but Bill may not value that skill as much considering it's a much more receiver-type role and he already has Blount and Gray for the regular rushes.

Thing is, with Lewis, McDaniels' favorite shotgun draw play would actually be a legitimate play, as opposed to just getting 2-3 yards generally.

There's no question, Lewis can shed tackles. The guy runs like a Ferrari but hits luck a truck.

It's a nice thing to have a strong pass catching back who has ability to run inside though, BB would value it quite a lot actually as it makes a more diverse player. Bill loves that.

I don't quite get the argument that "he may not prefer one player who can do two things when he has two players to fill those roles".

It's funny, because as much as Bill loves versatility, I think in this case he will value being very good at one specific thing over being good at a few things.

I absolutely agree and I could be totally wrong, I'm just saying how I feel about things right now in a "have to pick one" scenario.

IMO he will keep both.

Ah, my bad, I must have just misinterpreted you then.

I agree, both will be on the roster one way or another. I prefer Lewis over White for reasons I've stated thousands of times I feel already, lol.

I see White as Vereen and Lewis as Woodhead in their playing ability/style. I'd take Woodhead 7 days a week and twice on Sunday.

Cadet is not the same player as Lewis or White.

I haven't seen enough of Cadet's running game to comment, but I do know he's still learning to pass protect and handle blitzes. That's one thing he has going against him.

Loved how clutch Woodhead was. Never quit. One of my favorite players over the last few years.

FOXBOROUGH — Almost a year had passed since Dion Lewis last played in a football game, so the 28 snaps he was given in last Saturday’s 26-24 exhibition win at New Orleans felt like a second chance. Or in this case, 28 chances.

The Patriots running back made the most of them, putting up 48 yards on eight touches and scoring a touchdown in a comeback victory.

[...............]

The last time Lewis appeared in a regular-season NFL game: Dec. 30, 2012.

“I’ve been away from the game for a long time,” Lewis said. “So every rep counts.”

Lewis was talking about training camp, when he missed six practices because of an injury that also cost him the chance to play in the Aug. 13 preseason opener. But he could have been discussing the duration since his most recent regular-season NFL appearance: nearly 1,000 days.

Now, with Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley no longer Patriots, an opportunity to grab a spot on the 53-man roster is there, with a need for a dependable, versatile third-down back, someone who can run, block, and perhaps most importantly, catch.

Lewis and James White (10 touches, 43 yards) had solid games against the Saints and seem to be the best candidates for that third-down role, along with Brandon Bolden. LeGarrette Blount and Jonas Gray are expected to be the Patriots’ primary ball carriers, though Blount will miss the Sept. 10 season opener against the Steelers because of a one-game suspension issued by the NFL.

It would appear the door is open for Lewis. If he’s looking ahead or making any assumptions, he’s keeping those thoughts to himself.

“Can’t succeed in this business if you don’t take it one day at a time and try to get better every single day,” he said. “I just focus on trying to get better, every day just find something to get better at, critique myself, go from there.”

Where has Lewis gone? After two seasons at the University of Pittsburgh (2009-10), he was a fifth-round draft pick of the Eagles, and he played in 24 games as a reserve for Philadelphia over two seasons (2011-12), gaining 171 yards in limited action. He was traded to the Browns in 2013 but broke his leg during a preseason game and spent the year on injured reserve, then was cut by Cleveland last year after the preseason. Lewis spent less than a week with the Colts before being released again. He was finally signed by the Patriots on Feb. 6.

That’s the condensed version of how Lewis arrived in New England. Now that he’s here, assigned to the far corner of the locker room, far away from Blount, Gray, Bolden, and White, and where the practice squad players usually dress, Lewis is trying to get noticed.

It’s working, even if he doesn’t speak often, or loudly.

“He’s one of those guys who comes in every day, works hard, doesn’t say much, very tough player for his stature and his size. He plays a lot bigger than he actually is,” said Gray. “He plays with a lot of heart, plays with a chip on his shoulder, because he is one of the smaller guys.”

Lewis isn’t one of the smaller guys, as Gray described. He’s the smallest guy, according to the Patriots roster. At 5 feet 8 inches, Lewis looks up to everyone else. Every one of his teammates.

“Obviously, I’m one of the smallest people on the team. It’s been like that my whole life, so I’ve always got to go out there and try to prove myself,” Lewis said.

How does he compensate for his size in a large man’s game?

“You’ve got to work harder than everybody,” he said. “At this level, everybody works real hard, but you’ve just got to dig down deep and keep working harder. That’s what I try to do. I want to get better at everything. The little stuff is the most important.”

That, and a certain fearlessness.

“[Lewis is] easily one of the toughest guys on the team,” said Blount, who outweighs Lewis by more than 50 pounds. “Just look at the film from the last game. He’s not afraid to run in between the tackles.”

Lewis had three carries for 12 yards against the Saints, including an 11-yard run up the middle for a third-quarter touchdown, in which he bounced, hopped, and dragged a few defenders across the goal line. He also caught all five passes that were thrown to him, adding 36 yards. This, from someone who has only three NFL receptions in 24 games.

“Dion [and] James White had several plays like that, a screen pass or even on the goal line where he made a cut there to kind of jump outside and get into the hole,” coach Bill Belichick said, referencing Lewis’s touchdown run. “The evaluation of those guys to make yards on their own with the ball in their hands is something that you really don’t see until you get into live game situations, or making tough yards in a pile or on the goal line, those type of things. We do a little bit of that [in practice] but it shows up a lot more in a game.”

There’s another game on Friday against the Panthers, then one more exhibition game on Thursday with the Giants. Next week there will be two cuts, to get the roster to 53 players. Lewis, like everyone else currently wearing a Patriots jersey, wants to be among the final 53. He’s waited awhile to get another taste of regular-season NFL football.

“You’ve always got to go in with the mind-set of being real critical of yourself. Even if it’s a good play, I always think, ‘What could I have done to make that play better?’ That’s how you get the best out of yourself,” Lewis said. “I could have done better [against the Saints]. I could have done a lot better. Small things can become big things if you don’t put enough emphasis on them, so that’s what I try to do.”

Why does the local media love Brandon Bolden so much?

He's a core STer, and a good one, and deserves a roster spot just for that. I don't understand why there's this movement to make him a 3rd down back, when he's never shown any real skills either rushing or receiving or pass-blocking. He's like, acceptably below average at all of these things, but I don't see that as a need to get him on the field more.
