Through sources, my understanding is that Edelman could have played in either of the last two preseason games had they actually mattered, but the Pats are taking a cautious approach with their best receiver and punt returner. So one would assume then, that Edelman will be a go when Week 1 rolls around. However, the veteran pass catcher doesn’t want to court trouble from the big boss.

“Ask Bill (Belichick),” Edelman said. “I’m taking it day by day and I think I’m 10 seconds better than the last 10 seconds, so we’re good.”

But safe to say, for someone who loves competing and excels at the game, Edelman is looking forward to the day when he gets the green light.

"When that comes it’s going to be awesome," he said. "That’s what you play the game for.”

Great to hear Jules is getting healthy again, and might actually be ready to play.

I still wonder if we have enough bodies behind the WR position. An aging (but skilled) Reggie Wayne and an injury-prone Aaron Dobson don't strike me as reliable depth.

As the 4th and 5th behind Edelman, LaFell, Amendola that is more than just reliable, it is excellent. And that's before adding in Gronk and Chandler (and Lewis or White or Cadet...).

Seems like BB has become a Conscientious Objector when it games to the NFL's farcical scrimmage games.

Didn't he do this with Branch too?

I think the next Two PreSeason games are huge for Aaron Dobson to show how far he's come.

Knowing we know what they can do the next Time I want to see Gronk and Edelman on the field is week 1.

Yes. They were very cautious with Branch. WW as well.

Even though he is spectacular at it, I'd be ok if JE11 never saw another punt or KR ever again.

I was just going to say that, wouldn't mind Edelman there in an emmergency but knowing how important he is and the questionable dept behind him somebody else need to pick up that slack.

Right. I'm a big fan of LaFell and I think Wayne is still a good #2, but JE11 gives TB12 a trusted, very reliable move the chains target and playmaking ability at the WR position. The offense loses something when he is not out there.

Not playing healthy players? Hope the rule committee addresses this issue.

Not playing Edelman is a wise move. Brady and Edelman are completely in synch already. It reduces the chance that he'll get injured or concussed, and it gives more reps to Amendola who really started to get instinctively where he needed to be at the end of the season and in playoffs last year.

If the Panthers game is a true dress rehearsal for the Steelers opener, Edelman and the #1s should put in a couple of series with Brady and three or four with Garoppolo.

I would really like to see what Garoppolo can do with Gronk, Chandler, Edelman, Amendola and Reggie Wayne in LaFell's spot. He looked sharp with the #2s and #3s against a real hodgepodge of a defense for New Orleans. Once Garoppolo started throwing in rhythm, and trusting his receivers to be where they were supposed to be, the offense just rolled.

Early against the Saints #1 defense, it wasn't a true indication of what's possible throwing to a bunch of guys who are probably not going to make the team. If the #1 receivers are in there, the defense has to play it completely differently.

He's too good not to return punts. At very least he'd have to for the playoffs if he gets a bit banged up or something.

He is damn good no question.

Seeing that he has led the team in PRs the last two years I don't see it changing. It is good that DA can give him a breather every now and then.

He's the best punt returner in the history of the league.

Sorry, you put him back there.

Fine. He gets hurt on a PR I'm blaming you.:D

He's a football player. If he's afraid of getting hurt, he should retire. :D
He just turned 29. He's in his prime but need to be smart with him.

I agree in spirit but in all seriousness being out there for 900 snaps at 100/1000 catches and yards are very important to this offense.

As important as he is to the offense (and he is), he's more important as a punt returner in my mind. He's that good.

Not only can he run one back at any time, but he'll bring two or three back for 15-20 yards in a game, where a typical punt returner would fair catch or get a yard or two.

And, thankfully, miraculously, he quit fumbling.
