Lewis v White

So where does that leave Cadet?

Cadet has been nursing a hamstring injury and hasn't seen any preseason action. Hard to make any observations or predictions about him at this point.

There's no way Lewis gets cut... After what we saw on Saturday, we'd be crazy to let him go to another team

Absolutely, one good preseason game guarantees you a rester spot and a role as a key contributor during the season.

Belichick will be checking the waiver wires. The open question is how many running backs will be carried on the 53 after Game 2.

Blount, Gray
Bolden
Develin

We will carry at least one more.

Carrying two more means saving a position elsewhere (5th WR, 3rd TE or 9th OL). Personally, I don't see it. The above four plus a 3rd down back is all we need. The fact that we have three players competing for the position doesn't mean that we need two players. As I said, these players are sooooo good that we should be looking at the waiver wires.

The throwback argument: Pats haven't had white RB since the 70s.
Me, I'm leaning away from White & towards diminutive Lewis who shows more quickness. Both looked decent. Let's see who is more consistent making plays and pass blocking.

I have to think it leaves him on the outside looking in. Others have been taking advantages of their chances - and Cadet hasn't yet. We are lucky that it seems the 3rd down RB situation is looking this promising. I would have liked to see Vereen return (not at that price though) but the $ is better used elsewhere since White/Lewis seem up to the task.

It's unfortunate that Cadet won't be able to compete for the roster. He put up a good performance in training camp, and might actually be the most athletic out of all the three.

But yeah, the Pats ar lucky to have a surplus of talent, and not a deficit (not sure I can say the same for the cornerback position )

Danny Woodhead was white.

I'd say it is safe to assume so. :)

I think you are right.... except you need to restate it as such, "there is no way Lewis gets cut if he continues to perform as he did Saturday night." Mg is right that one game is not enough to earn a roster spot, but he was clearly the best RB on the field so he's a lock if he keeps that up.

DUH!!!

There you go again, ruining a post with facts.

Kyle Eckel too! And, hell, James Develin and Heath Evans if you want to throw in fullbacks.

I'm a Dion Lewis fan for a number of reasons:
  • He's a better pass protector.
  • He's from my hometown.
  • James White is a Wisconsin running back, which is bad news.

Looks like the 3rd down back competition just got more competitive. Cadet is now practicing again.

Dion Lewis was the 3rd down back with Brady in the Saints game. That should give you a slight indication that he is ahead of White.

You might see all 3 make it and 1 cut when Blount returns.

I hope so, but not necessarily. Teams will often "promote" players to see how they fare with the top unit. It is equally possible the team felt they had more info on White than they did Lewis. This week will be more telling, IMO.

We all are assuming that Brandon Bolden's position is secure. Is that something that isn't likely to change?

Yes. I think he signed an extension this offseason and his ST skills are regarded by BB and the team nearly as much as Slater's, not to mention his proven skills as a serviceable RB both running and catching. But that's just how I feel.

We still have more to hear from Cadet when he can get himself going again. It's still up in the air, but I think that all are capable and would not be surprised to see them all get significant touches in the regular season. There were a handful of plays last night where Lewis and White were on the field together, as was the case on the aforementioned shotgun TD run.

This is what I'm hoping for. That somehow BB manage to carve out a role for all three. Doesn't seem likely, but each have unique abilities that make for interesting formations and plays.

This is definitely a talented group of 3rd down running backs!
