And New England loves helping veteran retreads rejuvenate their careers, not out of the goodness of its organizational heart, but because Belichick and Co. seem to have a knack for getting the most out of guys many thought had nothing left:

  • A 31-year-old Rodney Harrison earned his second career All-Pro nod during his first year with New England in 2003.
  • A 30-year-old Corey Dillon had 1,635 yards in his eighth NFL season, which was also his first with New England in 2004. That was a career high for Dillon, and it marked only the fourth time in NFL history in which a running back went over 1,600 yards that late in his career.
  • Prior to signing with New England in 2006, 37-year-old Junior Seau had become a shell of his former self as a role player in Miami. But Seau became a solid starter again in '06 and played a key role on that legendary 2007 team that went to the Super Bowl.
  • Randy Moss had the best year of his career as a 30-year-old on the '07 Pats.
  • They got a solid 4.3 yards per carry and four touchdowns in a backup role from a 33-year-old Fred Taylor in 2009.

I know all about Dobson because of all the posts from last year that pretty much said pats need to keep him because he had one good game in 2013 and letting him go would be a mistake because he will probably be the next Randy Moss.

I feel that's a valid consideration to make, given our experience dealing with an injury-prone Gronk. Maybe the Pats feel that a fully-healthy Dobson can become play-maker.

That's said.... we knew that Gronk was worth the wait...I dunno we can say the same Dobson yet

After IR to Gibson..was needed IMO

SUCK IT INDY

I'm hoping Wayne gives us a Jerry Rice-like effort for a receiver age 36+

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...eggie-wayne-makes-too-much-sense-for-patriots

Wayne was the only receiver in the NFL to start beyond the age of 35 last year. And it doesn't bode well for his chances this season that only 17 wide receivers in modern NFL history have started beyond their 37th birthday. And amid that group, only Jerry Rice, Charlie Joiner, Tim Brown, Terrell Owens, Irving Fryar and Art Monk were remotely effective.

Most receptions by WRs beyond their age-36 season

Receiver REC YDS Starts

Jerry Rice 410 5,283 92
Charlie Joiner 154 2,165 39
Tim Brown 76 767 19
Terrell Owens 72 983 11
Irving Fryar 67 802 7
Art Monk 52 695 16
Drew Hill 34 384 7
Joey Galloway 32 378 10

Then it's a good thing we don't need him to start then.

(Also, IRVING FRYAR)

I can't say that I'm a Fan of this Move. I know that Mad Bill respects'm, but I've always detested Reggie Wayne.

And signing a 36 year old Flanker seems like a silly waste of Time.

Flankers rely on Quickness and Speed and Craft.

Wayne better have a lot of Craft, because his Quickness and Speed are dust.

I love Mad Bill, but I can't stand Moves like this.

There were all sorts of talented young WideOuts available, dirt cheap, in April ~ there generally are ~ and instead of plucking a couple of them and developing them, he signs another Geezer.

01 ~ Jerry Rice is about the only WideOut who's ever done anything but get in the way past the age of 36.

02 ~ Reggie Wayne is no Jerry Rice.

But..but Grind we have Aaron Dropson.:D:p

I think Amendola is going to be a vet cut most of us didn't see coming and yes I know he restructured and got a bonus. But he gets no separation anymore and can be covered by just about anybody. BB has cut his losses before this wouldn't be the first time. 200 yards for your #3 WR doesn't cut it anymore Brandon Gibson have looked better than Amendola in practices and games.

Word is Amendola has been a stud in practice and in the joint scrimmage with the Saints. And he ended the season last year really well. I think Amendola is going to be the #2 WR to start the season.

Add Andre Carter, Phifer, Brian Watters, Deion Branch part deux, Alge Crumpler and the immortal Doug Flutie to the list!

Lets leave off Joey Galloway and Shawn Springs for now...

If DA can give them what he did his last 5 games they'll be golden.

They are treating LaFell with kid gloves. People forget that not only did he have the foot issue, but he had shoulder surgery as well.

A few months ago I was watching regular season highlights and it was striking how much more athletic LaFell was than in the playoffs. Not sure how that relates to your comment, but it prompted it so you get a dose of verbal diarrhea. :)

He hurt his shoulder vs DET and his toe vs BUF. He was a mess. Played every game and still produced. Tough SOB.

BB was right. When you play deep into Jan and Feb this crap happens. Just need to manage the player's conditions now as it's likely they'll need them come late Jan again:)

Tim Wright caught 6 TD passes last season when the best DB's were covering Gronk, Lafell and Edelman.

Reggie Wayne can certainly replicate that production.

I am convinced Wayne can produce in this offense at a pretty high level. The fact that he is a meticulous route-runner and used to fairly complicated offenses and demanding QB's is huge.

The concern with him is health and still having enough quickness to separate from DB's. With that said, thats where being a savvy vet and kicking ass at selling his routes comes in handy.

I wish him the best. He doesn't have to be the #1, #2 or #3 option out there. He will do just fine as a #4 option for Tom.

I'm confused as to why people are having an issue with this. Most posters seemed fine with the WRs that were here before Wayne got here. Well, three of them have been on the shelf for most (or all) of the offseason, two of them are heading to IR for the season, one is a cut waiting to happen (Boyce) and one is a UDFA who may well be bound for the practice squad.

Wayne may be as cooked as a man who falls into a blast furnace for all we know, but so what?

If it weren't for the playoffs and Super Bowl, I might agree.

Love the signing. He doesn't need to be top 3 guy like in Indy, just needs to be depth and clutch player. If he can bring 40 receptions for 400 or so yards with a few tds then I'd be ecstatic.
