Greg Bedard on Brady vs Garopollo

I just want to see Jimmy do more of what he did last night. I am in no hurry to move on from Brady unless he drops off. No reason not to have 2 good QBs if they are affordable.

Seriously

I think Garoppolo has the potential to be a very good backup QB for us. I think talking about him overtaking arguably the best QB ever because he had a good preseason game against a terrible defense playing DBs who won't even be on a roster in a few weeks is absurd and foolish.

Brady has made us all very happy fans for the last 15 years we shouldn't be in such a hurry to see that end.

WTF??

Saying "After the 2017 season I think Garappolo will be more valuable to NE because at that point he'll be able to play for a lot more years than Brady can so I won't be shocked if Belichick decides its time to move on" isn't being "in such a hurry to see that end". It's facing up to a (sad, yes) reality. And a reality I hope to hell that Belichick doesn't get all sentimental for. I was a Celtics fan in the 80s and 90s and saw first hand what over-sentimentiality does and don't want to see a repeat.

How exactly does anyone know what Kraft said to Brady?

" I was just trying to stay ahead of the curve. If we were going to have to pay him elite-quarterback money and have elite-quarterback cap numbers, I just didn't think we would be able to build a team. We don't want to have a team where we're paying 18 to 20 percent to a player on the cap. I wanted to do something elegant that would work for everybody. I had been talking to him off and on for maybe 18 months, about how I wanted him to finish his career here, and about how we both have to be smart about it. I just really want him to end his career a Patriot.''

So, not looking to trade him, but does anyone think Jimmy significantly improved his value last night?

What do you think a team like Buffalo would give up?

There is no Garrapolo vs Brady. There is Brady and the guy with the clipboard until Brady gets tired of playing.

So you'd rather see the Patriots get rid of the player they pretty seemingly think will be their next long-term quarterback if Brady wants to play one or two more years (or NE thinks he'll only productively play one or two more years) past the point they either have to start or get rid of Garapollo?

If Brady can play 5 years past that point, different story! But also highly unlikely.

If NE really believes in Jimmy G, it would be beyond stupid to let him go after 2017 if they think Brady is only good for one or two years beyond 2017.

This reminds of the "growing disconnect" between Brady & The Pats story of a few years ago...I believe it was first reported by whiny Michael Silver.... How'd that work out for ya?

That was actually during the Pats 2-2 start last year.

Are these the same people who said Brady was washed up after 2 games last season?

Maybe they need to re-watch the 2nd half of the most recent SB.

AKA the same people who pulled to keep Cassel over Brady...never gonna forget that one...

It would not bother me if some sentimental roster decisions involved Brady. It's not like his contract would cripple the team. I'm sure he would retire if he knows his skills are diminished, but if he has something to prove let him play a year or two to figure it out. He deserves that much. Only one team wins the Super Bowl, just count his last years as a goodbye tour. Even the Ravens allowed Ray Lewis that.

I do think it did go up. Not sure to what though.

Even if its 1st rounder neither player is going anywhere.

I do think they need to monitor TBs playing time whether TB likes it or not. As he gets older and he does want to play as long as he can, minutes in meaningless games could be important.

You dont need him injured in games that are decided and the Pats typically have games wrapped up early. This might be the guy they can put in there to preserve the GOAT a bit. 16 game season is a grind anyway and he has often played in the playoffs with injuries.

I saw this in hoops with Rajon Rondo as well. Sometimes there isn't that 'next guy' on the roster. You are not going to move from one HOF QB to another. Sure maybe Brady's backup is the next Steve Young - but realistically he is probably the next Hoyer.

NE fans get egged on by guys like ESPN who know better and want to see Brady out of NE.. Sure Brady is old - but the league is soft on QBs now - you can barely touch em. Brady is correct in assessment - he can play a lot more years at a very high level, IMHO.

He is one of the all-time greats - and the next Brady probably isn't going to come around in our lifetime. The Pats would do well to stretch out their Brady time. BB knows better - expect to see TB for a while. Expect to see JG traded..

My thoughts on Jimmy G: Garoppolo is already better than some starting quarterbacks. With the limited film, Garoppolo has already shown that he is one of the most accurate QBs in the NFL and his other traits should continue to develop. Who would you rather have start now Ryan Tannehill or Jimmy G? Tannehill relies on his athleticism and has terrible accuracy. Jimmy G already has great accuracy an Jimmy's first game(Redskins preseason game) he looked off a deep safety to throw a bomb to Tyms. Not exactly a rookie move. I still think Brady has plenty of years left. But I wouldn't let Garappolo go.

If Garoppolo is content to just wait for Brady to retire, he shouldn't be the QB in New England. OTOH, if he has that desire, he won't be willing to stay beyond his rookie contract unless he's the starter.
