Our First String Offense AND Our First String Defense Looked Awful

Apparently, pre-season performance is irrelevant. Ok go back to discussing Deflategate!!!!!

It is whenever anyone shows enthusiasm over a previously unknown player. Many on here only mention the preseason when it fits their argument.

So and so looked great tonight!
Reply: It's only preseason. Let's not go carving any busts for Canton just yet...

Vs.

The Pats are in trouble. We got killed in PS#2. There are huge holes to fix. We're screwed!
Reply: it's only preseason. There's time to fix it...
No. We're screwed.

Some comments on the comments:

Disclaimer: The longer I follow the Pats the LESS I care about what happens in these pre season games. I think practices will tell you more sometimes. It's hard to watch individual battles and techniques, which is what really matters in these scrimmages There is little or no game planning, and that's a huge factor in the team results, so aside from effort and communications, it is very hard to get a fix on where your team is. So for that reason I only watched the first quarter of the game, and then switched, only coming back during commercials. Keep that in mind as you read my comments

1. Huge over reaction MG. Lots of things to be critical of and lots of teaching points to be made. But there were a few mitigating factors that have to be mention beyond the players who weren't on the field.
a. The play calling wasn't in reaction to either down and distance or what the Saints were playing.

b. C on the OL is weak. Andrews held up pretty well in pass protection but was over his head vs the run. The fact is you cannot run the ball if your C is getting handled. The good news that IS the #3 C, who happens to be an UDFA rookie

c. That being said it didn't seem like the Rookie OG's weren't getting much movement either in the first half. But at first glance it looked like Mason showed improvement vs the pass.

d. Pass protection was decent. From what I saw, Brady was rarely touched, even though he was hurried a few times.

2. Hard to follow the defense. I thought the first DL played well against the run. And showed some decent inside push. Malcolm Brown got too high a few times I watched him and that can kill an initial push. Easley looked a bit quicker off the ball, but was too high as well.

3. Interesting to see McCourty still at CB, though he played the slot as well on the GL. Most of the succes Brees had on his first 2 drives was with his RB's and check downs. That's an easy fix when you game plan. Having Collins covering RB's from a MLB position is NOT something they'd do during the season.

4. Based on what I read during the 2 practices with the Saints it was very clear that very little was being done in the running game. So I wasn't surprised that neither side was particularly sharp in that area.

5. I like the way Deion Lewis runs the ball. White STILL as shown nothing in the running game. It has now taken him almost 2 years to come up with one nifty run for his TD, but that's been IT for his running highlight film. However it's clear even to me that he is definitely a threat out of the backfield. Unlike when he runs the ball, on almost every catch he makes the first guy miss. So to me at this point the guy is giving us only ONE value to his game, when he needs to be trying to have 4 (running, catching, blocking, and ST's)

6. The way the Giants are losing S's, it might be the time to pull of a trade, since we are very deep and strong at that position. It wouldn't be a bad thing to pick up a low round pick for either Ebner or Wilson.

7. JG improved his game considerably. He was much more aware of the pass rush, and moved productively when pressured, something he didn't do well against the Packers. His TD pass was a nice preview of his field awareness. I didn't see his pick.

wait...panic NOW instead of what?..the post KC debacle LAST REGULAR SEASON? A super bowl winning season?...panic NOW instead?..and if disagreed with throw out the Deflategate strawman?

this has gotta be a joke...

once again Ken, you eloquently state what I can only dream of putting into words...

Clearly we're not ready for Prime Time.

Brady count a first down in three series. The power run game was less than nonexistent.

Brees had four scoring drives against our first string defense. The result was three TD's and dropped pass that could have been a 4th TD (ended up in a field goal).

I watched the first half, I don't ever recall seeing our first string offense. did i miss the plays with lafell, edleman, and gronk?

I remember 1 year we lost to the bungles 31-3 or something, went on to a very good season. It is preseason.

LOLOLOLOLOL

We just talk about practice.
We sittin here, I'm supposed to be a franchise player
and we in here talkin bout practice.
I mean, listen, we talkin bout practice.
Not a game.
Not a game.
Not a game.
We talkin bout practice.

I sorta care.

I just refuse to panic when the not-even first strings play a quarter, and your Pro Bowl safety started at Corner tonight.

For me, the takeaway tonight is that Garoppolo is great on his first read. Decisive, and the ball gets stuck in between the receivers numbers. Sheard looks like he might be a real player. And a healthy Dion Lewis so deserves to wear that 33.
Every year the same thing happens. People go into tailspins when the Patriots trot out a lacklustre preseason and every year, the team wins 12+ games. I was concerned through weeks 1-4 last season then the team clicked. That's what interests me, not this stuff. It's nice to see football and see some guys come on but it's not worth getting into a sook over.

So, we played without three of our top players against a team with no defensive backs and couldn't even manage a first down. If that's a great performance to you, OK.
If it was relevant Bill would have kept them in there ... and he has in the past to send a message.

This thread is an abomination.

Game 2 of the preseason is simply not a reliable yardstick for team ability. For individual group ability it can be a little better of a yardstick, the individual ability of a player a bit more. But that level of nervous concern for this meaningless game??? That just doesn't compute.

If you need to have this level of serious, and justified, worry then look at the secondary. But that was there (or should have been there) well before this game and unfortunately it will be there for at minimum several more weeks (hopefully no more).

I thought McCourty covered well. Lewis ran well between tackles. Need to see him on 1st team. Solder played poorly. MB did a great job. Harper was the difference, like that kid. Gray is very good.
1st offence with Brady looked slow, confused, and D looked ok, but nothing special.

So, we played without three of our top players against a team with no defensive backs and couldn't even manage a first down. If that's a great performance to you, OK.
We played with receivers that probably won't make the team, against DBs that might not make the team. I don't really see how you can draw any conclusions from that on how our offense will be this season.

The rookie guards were supposed to be road graders, yet they couldn't get any push against Saints back-ups and 3-stringers. That's really worrying. The OL is the key to the offense.

I know seriously. We have to dump Cassell.

:D
