http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/...wn_seizing_control_of_starting_cornerback_job

The article is actually about Tarell Brown, but other points get made as well.

Brown made an impressive surge over the past week to seize control of the No. 2 cornerback job, and it’s his to lose after Darryl Roberts’ troublesome wrist injury and Logan Ryan’s recent struggles.
It’s unclear just how the Patriots plan to use safety Devin McCourty on a fulltime basis this season, but recent reps clearly suggest he’ll have some type of role close to the line. If that becomes permanent, consider Brown the nickel back, which is essentially a starting job in today’s game anyway. Otherwise, with McCourty deep, Brown and Malcolm Butler are the starting corners in the base defense at this point.

I think the signs are in favor of a 3-safety nickel, simply because that's where the healthy talent is concentrated. I mean this in the sense of a classic nickel, with 6 "Front 7" players and 5 DBs on a passing down. McCourty has lined up in a kind of CB role on passing downs frequently in recent seasons anyway, so as to more easily fit him and Harmon onto the field at the same time.

I wouldn't necessarily suggest that there will be much Big Nickel in the sense of a SS playing LB on what is otherwise a base defense, just because we have three highly paid LBs who, if healthy -- not that durability is their long suit -- should all be on the field whenever it makes sense for them to be. To look at it another way, the top hybrid SS/LB these days is Collins, not a DB.

A second Jeff Howe article says similar but not identical things. http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/...ts_notebook_defense_testing_against_nfls_best

For now, the starting secondary in the base defense looks like it will include Malcolm Butler and Brown at corner and Devin McCourty and Patrick Chung at safety. However, McCourty’s increased usage closer to the line of scrimmage has given more reps to safety Duron Harmon in both the base (at the expense of Brown) and nickel packages.

With 19 days until the regular-season opener, though, plenty more can change. After all, just a week and a half ago, Logan Ryan and Darryl Roberts were the starting corners in the nickel alongside Butler before Roberts suffered a difficult wrist injury and Ryan surrendered two completions for 31 yards and a touchdown and committed a holding penalty against the Packers.

It hurts to click on anything in the Herald, but Jeff Howe is a good reporter (and Fencer's comments make a lot of sense to me).

Boston mediots already have their daggers out for BB. Complaining about McCourty seeing reps at CB for 2 days in joint practices as if that confirms that he is moving back to CB.

They worked out Big Bang Clock at cb too. Move along, nothing to see here.

Mcourty as CB in at least 30%of his snaps, maybe in some games 100%. Depends on the game.

Harmon & Richards in some 3down snaps as FS, Mcourty with Butler, dont know who will be slot. Arrington released is still?? for me. Why they didnt wait and trade him?

By the way, I'm pretty happy how the CB/S situation worked out. Patiently waited for brown, got some experienced and new safety talent and the Ryan McLain and the eagles guy look like depth,or slot, plus plucked a nice 7th round guy and maybe a big UDFA in Jimmy Jean.

Goes to show persistence and patience can lead to success even at an expensive to fill position.

I'm probably more optimistic than most with the secondary, however, there has been no success yet, lets remember that.

A real game has yet to be played and for much of the past few weeks our DBs have been beating up on our #3, 5, 6, and 7+ receivers with our #2 TE also out.

And yes, the Saints do have Drew Brees, but they've also jettisoned a very large percentage of their receiving yards this off season much like we did entering 2013. That offense will not be very potent IMO.

Why? Arrington was terrible.

Arrington is TY Hilton cryptonite and is very good slot cornerback, just dont put him outside, than stuff happens, lik eloss to 49s two years ago, this year SB, etc:)

BB works everyone out in man to man

Brown coming along is great news. He was pretty darn good in SF.

Wish Roberts wasn't banged up. Hope its not a nagging injury.

I was expecting Howe's thoughts on Goodell, Pash. Kensil, etc. Aren't they easily the biggest DBs in the league?

My mistake, I thought this was about Felger, Massarotti, Mortenson , Chris Carter, Mark Brunell, Tanguay, Volin, ,........................

Oops...didn't see you already beat me to the punch!

Arrington was/is terrible.

He kept TY Hilton in check because that was the gameplan and he always had help.
