Schefter: Giants owner John Mara declines to participate in settlement discussions with Brady, NFL

Mort said on ESPN that it was Judge Berman who asked. And Mara declined b/c the cowboys play the Pats week 4, and it would be a competitive advantage b/c the Cowboys play in the same division.
I find that highly unlikely. Most likely, Berman will have new insight into Mort Reporting come tomorrow morning when he sees this.

Maybe they can get Woody Johnson instead. They just need to explain to Woody what "settlement talks" means.
Is that when you take Tums?

The very fact that mara's name is being mentioned in the case is going to make a lot of owners uncomfortable. Whether they get up and ask the the nfl to settle remains to be see. The NFL on the other hand says it refused mara's involvement on its own. Dont know who declined and who denied

And, who leaked this? Somebody on the NFL's side, but who?

Good question, someone in the background that thinks this is a farce. Apparently the Judge doesn't think he can get through to Goody for whatever reason, is Goody telling him he has to answer to the owners so the Judge went over his head? Something smells here, not sure what it is.

We probably don't want Mara involved anyway. He's probably dumber than the typical Jets/Ravens/Colts fan when it comes to Deflategate. I'm sure all he read was the NY Post and their screaming headlines about Brady destroying his phone. Doubt he read the parts where the Wells Report AND the NFL Lawyer state there is no definitive proof Brady schemed to do anything wrong.

When has John Mara ever been for anyone but John Mara? He was the main force behind Harbaugh's crying to change the rules about formations. He's just as big a doosh as the rest of them, I wouldn't want him any where near the settlement talks.

Stradley has been pretty harsh on the NFL lately. One of her latest-

I've been real world lawyering for a while. Both for companies and individuals. So, when a judge keeps telling you to settle, and one side has a ridiculous settlement stance that cannot be accepted, you likely know what is going to happen.

We aren't talking about the NFL holding on to money. Or fighting for the American way of life. They want to stop one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history from doing quarterback stuff because they paid a bunch of money for a weakass investigation and feel too foolish to backoff. There is no legitimate reason to maintain the settlement posture that they need to get a certain number of game suspension or exact a confession from a guy who already testified under oath he didn't do squat.

I do not know the terms of Roger Goodell's contract. Owners have stuff going on, and they rarely agree on anything. So I don't think anything will happen to him because it never does no matter what he says or does.

This is my favorite recent Stradley tweet:

Succintly shuts down the whole sports talk radio crowd. She definitely has a point, most of these sports talk guys don't know any more about these legal proceedings than half the posters on this forum.

Michael Felger interpreting Supreme Court decisions today was like, one of the funniest things I've ever heard on the radio. Holy crap, that was hysterical.

Mort is very clearly and openly repeating what the league told him. Hence, it is plausible that he got the story right. In his version:
  • Judge Berman asked for Mara to join the settlement talks, because he's chairman of the Executive Committee.
  • The league said "Naah, that's inappropriate, because Goodell is the god-king of the NFL. Besides, Mara's from another team, so that aspect would be awkward."
  • Mara said "Yeah, what the league said; that's right."

All those days of sleeping in the hallway by the door of Roger and Kensil's office have finally paid off for one of the NFL's purveyors of propaganda..

"Gee willikers I hope I got that right".. said Mort.

If Mara sided with Brady he could be accused of wanting TB to play against the CBoys. A lose for Dallas is a benefit to the Giants - conflict of interest.

I don't remember Mara concerning himself with competitive advantages over division opponents when he aided Goodell in his ridiculous sanctions against the Cowboys and Redskins during the uncapped year.

Mara is an awful hypocrite - just like 95% (or possibly all) of the owners.

I don't think this thread merge should have happened without a title change, because one point of the new information is that the thread title is misleading.

Yeah I read this as he won't life a finger to clean up the NFL's mess.
But the headline on my iPad says it's the league" that has rejected his involvement." Can we try to get this right?

Rejecting a specific request by the judge to facilitate mediation...that won't make the judge feel that the NYJFL is sincerely interested in reaching a settlement as he has requested

I look at this as the NFL attempting to convince Berman that they are actually trying to 'settle' this. In fact, Mara is the farthest thing from a neutral unbiased party. I'm sure the NFL would love to introduce him into the mix but he's a little too smart to get involved at this point. I'm almost positive that trying to introduce Mara into this was an attempt to shore up the battered NFL party who has taken some serious body blows since this entered Berman's court. Another positive sign for the good guts and don't believe the spin on this as Mara saw this as a 'conflict of interest.' It's simple, Mara isn't going down with this "Titanic.' and there are no life boats for that crew.
