I have a theory. I think the main reason why more NFL fans have had such a hard time seeing what is so clear to us in this Deflategate thing, comes from the fact that they sincerely believe that the Patriots must be doing SOMETHING illegal. They believe this because they have completely bought into the concept that the NFL is geared to Parity. Teams rise, and then they fall, only to rise again. They see it happen almost every year.

So when looking through THAT kind of prism, it's not hard to understand why after 14 consecutive years of winning seasons, 12 consecutive years of double digit wins, 6 superbowl appearances, with 4 wins, etc; why they might question how this organization can maintain this excellence, when NO one else in the salary cap era can come close. SOMTHING has to be going on. Right?

So when the NFL (who HATES that the Pats aren't conforming to the Parity Imperative) creates deflategate out of thin air, and then sells it with the propaganda mastery of Goebbels or Ailes; we can now understand why, even when presented with overwhelming evidence to the contrary, they still hold on to the illusion that SOMETHING isn't fully Kosher in NE.

When I saw the excellent clip on Junior Seau, which peeks behind the barriers BB usually puts up, and allows us to see into a team meeting It showed a side of the Pats that I wish the league knew more about..... Hell that WE knew more about. It wasn't the sterile, cool, antiseptic version that the rest of the league identifies us with. It was warm. It was funny. It was watching a group of men who work hard, with a common goal reflecting on a iconic figure who passed ever so briefly through their lives, and the impact he had on them. A group of men who obviously like and respect each other, but also the men that play the game the right way.

It's not easy to be a Patriot. It's not for everyone. The REAL secret of their long running success comes NOT from deflated footballs, NOT from any advantage rung from illegal films, but rather because they simply work harder, get prepared better, and are more consistently disciplined and focused than their opponents. It sounds so ridiculously simple when you say it like that, but it is incredibly hard to put into action., And MANY times more difficult to "maintain" that level of excellence over a long period of time. THAT's the genius of Bill Bellichick. Not that he got them to the point of success, but that he's KEPT them there.

To that end, THAT is what marks BB as the greatest of all time. The NFL has seen their share of great coaches. Guys who were great innovators. Guys who were great motivators. But NO one has been able to put together the kind of consistent excellence that BB has. Only Landry, or maybe Shula come close, but they got to coach in a league that allowed teams to be kept together, longer. BB has done it during the height of the salary cap era, and maintained it through about 3 different rebuilds, where the only consistency has been Brady.

This entire affair has been the product of envy and jealousy from individuals who couldn't replicate the kind of success the Pats have maintained. People who either don't know or don't WANT to know how hard it is to do what BB has done. Just because other programs can't duplicate that level of success, they believe that SOMETHING has to be going on.

They don't want to believe its merely because the Patriots are usually better prepared, better coached, more disciplined and focused than their opponents. It's too simple, and IF it was so simple why hasn't everyone done it. THAT's because, while it is simple to set forth what needs to be done, its is extraordinarily hard to implement, and like I said, even harder to do it year after year after year.

Parcells couldb't do it. He was never going to be a maintainer of excellence. In fact HIS greatest gift was that he recognized that in himself, and that's why every time he reached success, he was already looking for his next job. He knew he had a relatively short shelf life.

Of course, BB got lucky in getting Brady so early in his tenure, and having him be able to play at such a high level for so long. But people forget 2 things. Brady was never the GOAT right out of the box. There was a process and that took several years. The other thing they forget that for the first 2 critical years Brady was with the Patriots, Bill Bellichick was his QB coach.. And it also didn't hurt that BB's benefited by being HC in the same place for 15 years with many long time assistants, all speaking the same language and on the same page.

So, I'd like to propose a "propaganda" attack of our own. I'd like to break down this myth that the Pats can't be this successful without doing SOMETHING. I'd like to think that when we confront, or go to other teams' sites or converse with fans of other teams; we can explain the simple message that I've already mentioned twice.

The Pats win because in a league where the margin between victory and defeat is razor thin; they are better coached, better prepared, more disciplined and focused. What makes that obscenely simple strategy work is that it arises out of an environment of just plain hard work, committed players, and very, very smart leadership. It's also why its known around the league that playing for the Pats is not for everyone. (BTW- It doesn't make you're a bad guy if it isn't for you.)

I think if we offer other fans an alternative to the NFL myth making machine, they will at least become more open minded to the truth of what's happening to the Pats and more specifically Tom Brady.

I like it!!! But good luck selling it on JetsInsider

Why haven't we heard this from all the former players? Do the sports shows ignore them and their message? A lot of former Patriots are greatful for their experience. Should they not help spread this type of message?

I believe the only solution is time. When the dust settles, when the coaches and players who have lost to the patriots have retired, there will be a new generation that looks back and study how the pats did it for so long, then you will see exegesis as opposed to the eisegesis that we are getting now. Then we will have true appreciation of what the pats did. I believe there will always be a better dynasty down the road but you never know when it will come.

I find that most people nowadays spend little time forming opinions on subjects they have little to no knowledge about. They get their news from headlines on Yahoo, and once something is said, it is repeated over and over until it becomes a certainty. From there on, it's almost impossible to move them from that frame of mind.
The Patriots spent too little time putting the truth out, while the NFL used the tactics they have tried previously with other teams and shaped the narrative. Every leak was a fact to most people. And the Wells report was a thorough investigation! The Topping on the cake so to speak.
When Kraft excepted the report, that was it. The Patriots were guilty, no buts about it. It was a very badly thought out move and one that the Patriots and Brady continue to pay for.
Most people need to identify with the victim and the NFL did a good job of framing themselves as being abused by the Patriots. If the Patriots had immediately fought back with facts, screaming of the improprieties of the whole affair. If TB had said I definitely DID NOT do this instead of "I don't think I did this". Maybe something could have been done immediately.
The Patriots still have not gone out on a limb over this. They should have investigators looking into everything. They should be having news conferences every time they find out a new fact. They should have the Dorito **** twins in front of cameras saying we didn't do this.
But alas, it is too little too late. TB stands alone. Except for the fans. We stand with him!!!

I think it would be like peeing in the ocean in an attempt to raise its water temperature.

Honestly, if this wasn't the Patriots and I didn't take an interest in the facts, I would probably tend to think the Commissioner, league executives and 'independent' investigator would have no reason to be unfair and a player who broke the rules would probably deny it.
Brady was deemed guilty when accused. Unringing that bell is near impossible.
Getting proper justice, then finishing his GOAT career will led to "Tom Brady who was falsely accused by the Commisioner" instead of Tom Brady, who had a HOF career despite being suspended for his part in a scheme to deflate footballs in a conference championship game.
THAT is the key, not what some bozo posting on a Lions message board in his mothers basement (or his cousin Ben Volin) think today.

It's tough to come up w/ examples people believe and give weight to. E.g., one could persuade them of the great coaching before the Malcolm Butler INT, but they'd still focus on Carroll's play call that allowed it.

"Slot" receivers might be a good one, because the list is now Brown, Welker, AND Edelman. People might believe that's playing in the moment rather than cheating on play calls. But it's hard to explain the superior coaching there, rather than superior GMing ...

... and proving superior GMing in some respects isn't very persuasive overall, since the Patriots have their GMing misses just like everybody else does.

Early to adopt 3-4 AND early to downplay 3-4 is persuasive of BB being an excellent coach. I think a lot of fans would grant that. But it's not specifically an execution thing.

Early to focus on STs wouldn't be too persuasive now; not that many people recall the Patriots' undressing of Cowher in the AFCC that was all about STs, and more recent evidence isn't that strong. And it doesn't help that the blocked FG runback technically contained an illegal lateral.

Hmm ...

Here's a thought, maybe the Pats will miraculously stop cheating when the other teams stop sucking.

Is it just possible that there is a relationship between the two?

Nice essay.

You alluded to, but did not specifically attribute one thing that ALSO BB does. He searches out and keeps good people; even if they are not the most athletic types available. The proportion of college graduates, Academic All-Americans, team captains, leadership types, and Boy Scouts, among the Patriots player squads must lead the League in such categories.

We are not surprised that Harvard and MIT graduates excel; but never forget that they choose the very creme of the crop of matriculating Freshmen, and then forced them to grow too.

Look at the QBs that BB has chosen to keep and develop, even if for only a short time. Brady, Hoyer, Cassell, Mallett and Garrapolo. All are in the league and competing with different levels of success, for starting positions for various NFL teams. There are many teams that select in better Draft positions and yet to see even a single QB endure at all.

-OR- they just don't read past the headlines, get an opinion formed and thats the end of it..

example.. I'm just now learning about the screw job bountygate was for the saints, read a couple articles right when it first came out, opinion was formed, that was the end of my interest. Without deflategate and the comparisons I'd have no clue about the NyFL's previous lies like the ledger of bounty’s paid not matching the actual injuries in the game the NyFL claimed it was for.. and not matching the second game the NyFL claimed it was for after people figured out the first was a lie.

I admit if it was the jets or colts or ravens, I'd just read the headlines, and from there not want to read any more about it at all but would take every opportunity to slam that team I could find.. just like they are doing.

It's not easy to be a Patriot.
Its not easy to be Patriot when owner sells his own team as cheaters. TWICE.
So its waste of my time. I suport coaching stuff, players in both of those situation, but until Kraft do something i wont defend the team he owns.
Again in any debate i am defending Brady, with warning that his owner is a mayor douche who put him in fire instead of himself

Posting as Pats advocates of fact on other teams message boards? Ya gotta be kidding me!

Bob "Vichy" Kraft killed our chances of being perceived as anything but shady when he (1) accepted Spygate penalties without insisting that RG publicly say what the penalty was for in precise language, filming a GAME from a prohibited location, not filming per se. Then (2) Turtled immediately when the league pressured him on the psi flap making it appear that he accepted that Brady was a cheetah. Note I said "appear". So perceived outside of NE and even by many here.

It's done. We have to live with it.

Thanks, Bob.

My 2 cents.

"The Patriots were the youngest team ever to win a Super Bowl, with an average age of 25.2 years. They repelled Seattle’s bid to join greatness, and solidified their own legacy thanks to a historic performance from Brady, who set a Super Bowl record with 37 completions on 50 attempts."

Some people beat the Patriots up because they are "disrespectful" to their veterans and renegotiate or cut bad contracts. The fact is that they draft well and are near the top of the list in regards to signing and retaining undrafted free agents. They target workers and teams players. Player selection and their shrewdness with the salary cap has helped them stay on the top for so long. (and of course, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick!)

yeah but Brady destroyed his phone, so that just proves the Patriots cheated to win all those Super Bowls

Ken-

I agree wholeheartedly, but I believe you are assuming that fans of other teams are simply misinformed.

The corollary to all of this is other teams don't work hard enough, lack the proper work ethic, and are poorly prepared. Add to that a once in a generation coach (which none of them have) and a once in a generation quarterback (which none of them have), and they must accept that their teams are realistically playing for second until this team disbands.

It is infinitely easier to believe that the Pats are corrupt and evil, and have inked a pact with Lucifer himself in order to enjoy this measure of success. The Pats cannot prove a negative, specifically that they did not cheat. Not now, not with Spygate. That means any details offered to prove how smart BB is or how dedicated Brady and the rest of the Pats are to their craft is window dressing for a corrupt organization. To those unreasonable football fans, and I believe they are legion, that is simple propaganda and the Pats are P.T. Barnum.

My question to you is why rest your joy of the Pats on what these clowns think? I refuse to debate the issues in TX because there is little reasonable debate. True football fans and students of the game know the score and think it's ridiculous, but most fans do not fit that criteria. I watch football to watch the game, and accept that I will hear few accolades from other fan groups when the Pats perform as they have been for more than a decade. The run will end one day, but I plan on enjoying it for as long as it lasts.

For many years the Patriots were seen as one of the doormats of the NFL. Then along comes BB and suddenly the same doormat team is winning year after year, and not just winning division championships but Super Bowls. How to explain such a change, BB didn't win in Cleveland in fact he was run out of town. Then along comes spygate and vuala the answer, the pats have been cheating, that explains it to a Lot of media and fans of other teams. And its the easy way out, my team didn't suck, my team didn't lose to the pats, the pats cheated. This is now embedded in the minds of fans and media, even if its not true. One of the things about this society is that we like to build people or things up so we can tare them down. Ive never gotten that but it seems to be true. Brady is the perfect example, sixth rnd draft pick married to a super model wife that went on to win four SB's etc. Its not hard to see why fans of other teams tare Brady and the Pats down. If you can't beat them just call brady and the pats cheaters, it invalidates the wins.
