Winners and Losers From Patriots vs Packers

Ian Logue

Thursday night's game against Green Bay saw some players have a strong performance, while some others still have some work cut out for them in the weeks ahead as the Patriots preseason continues.

Ian is down on Malcom Brown. I thought he did fairly well actually.

Brown got a lot of work. That is just fine by me at THIS point.Didn't stand out but stood in there.WQay way way too early to start the bashfest on him IMO

I agree - I didn't kill him:

"Malcom Brown – Got manhandled on a couple of plays and struggled in his first outing. This is one of those games a player like him needs to go through to get better, and hopefully it was a good learning experience for him to grow from."

He'll be fine. I saw him get pushed around when I went back over it last night glancing at some of some of the plays he was in on. But he went up against some good players and this is his first chance to battle someone other than his own teammates. I'm sure he'll be O.K.

Easley didn't knock your eyes out, but did produce the tackle that stopped the Pack on Fourth Down. In general the end pressure was good but I don't know how much to attribute to the tackle play and not letting Rodgers step up...

Jonas Grey... at halftime, Michael Irvin said, "Belichick, if you're not gonna start this guy, could you please send him to Dallas?" LOL

I only got to see bits and pieces of this game, so I cannot comment on the veracity of anyone's comments one way or the other. But I can comment on this. People should be aware that last night was the first full contract, full speed action for anyone on BOTH sides. So, of course, there would be a lot of sloppy play and mistakes.

Matt Chatham made the comment in one of the brief occasions I got in front of a TV, that players are hampered, especially young players, by the lack of contract and reps they get since the new CBA practice routine was put in place. Sure their bodies are being protected by the lack of reps, but I'm beginning to wonder by just how much. There doesn't seem to be a much of a drop in the injury rate since the new rules have been in place, in fact I'm wondering if there aren't more?

But the point I'm trying to make is that what you saw last night was NOT quality football. It can't be because the players aren't ready yet to play at a high level. They simply haven't gotten the full speed reps they need to get to that point. The sad fact is that come 9.10, the STILL won't be ready.

Hmm, I thought White wasn't very good, honestly. Yeah, not bad on the pass-catching, but every time he took a handoff, he stood up and hesitated...and got crushed.

Jonas Gray was exactly what I expected - the guy is a starting caliber running back, period. Beast mode.

I wouldn't give Boyce mixed ratings, but simply a down arrow, personally (and I want him to make the team badly, in a binky sort of way). He just never seems to step up and take the next level into his hands. If Dobson is my 4th receiver and I'm looking for a 5th, I'd take Gibson over him, despite Gibson's redundancy with DA and JE.

And Tyms could beat either of them out, possibly.

Boyce should be better than he is. It's like watching JBJ try to hit major league pitching. Sure, now he's doing it, but the NFL isn't like MLB and there's no 1000 plate appearance break-in time.
